Title: Please help me - I have lost an excel file!
Post by Iceman on Aug 15th, 2005, 3:46pm
If anyone out there can give me advice on how to recover an Excel file, I would be very grateful  :)

Basically, I was trying to open a file but unfortunately I was actually SAVING the blank spreadsheet I had open, to the same name as the file I was hoping to open! If that makes sense.

I am hoping that somewhere the data is in limbo even though the file has been changed?

Many thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer!

The file I am looking for is my rota for all the chores darling, it has taken months to develop and with it I can manage all of my daily tasks AND have time left over to relax in. Now all I need to do is decide what to do in those 7 minutes..........

Hi Iceman,

If you are using XP do a search (which is a standard tool of XP) using as much of the file name as you know and the comp will find every file with the same name you will then have to go through them until you find the file that you have lost. If you are unsure how to do this give me an IM and i will go through it with you.

On the off chance a name search doesn't work. Try a search for all files with a .xls extension and sort through that.

Good Luck [smiley=smokin.gif]

Also do a search for *.xlk

THIS (http://www.bettersolutions.com/excel/6122425992210234122322131212225/1624246019205181420185711891219.htm) site has some good suggestions.

Otherwise you are stuck with the file from your last backups.

Paul:
Doesn't Win XP have some sort of back up device where you can return to a previous state. Like last week before the mistake happened?
Sort of like my tape back ups?

Yes, it does, System Restore, and it works like a charm !  Believe me, I've screwed up so many times and it has brought everything back to me like I never made a boo-boo.  Ain't Technology great!   ;;D

Kirk,
I may be wrong but I believe it only works to restore system files and settings and possibly user setting but not user files. It can be used to fix a broken system caused by installing buggy drivers or software. Of course it has to be disabled before removing any virus/worm/spyware infection to prevent you from restoring to an infected state. Upon doing this you will lose all previous restore points.

Anyway it may be worth a try like PD says, you never know what may work in windows, kind of like a crap shoot. I doubt that it will be able to restore an over written file but you never know.

Grant, I think we need your advice here.

Sounds to me like my tape back-ups are a better idea. [smiley=smokin.gif]

If you saved a blank file with the same name, sorry its gone, system restore won't get it back. :'( System restore does not bring back files. Sorry bro. been there done that. A good recovery program may work,  the FBI or Interpol probably got one that will work  ::)

Tape back-ups kick ASS!! I've got one for my CAD station at work, and I'm still running a hellaciously outdated NT machine. LOL Still, those damn tapes have saved my bacon more times than I can count.

Good luck, David!

Thanks for the advice guys! Unfortunately the pc I was working on is only running Win98 and as a few people have said, the file is gooooooooone! But I do have a hard copy so I can build it again from scratch (lots of formulae), that is assuming the FBI doesn't return my call...............
