I suggest you read either Kierkegaard or Camus.

Let us know how your search goes.

I also recommend going over 480 mg. of verapamil but you may want to try regular release as opposed to the extended ;;D

Isn't life "Absurd" ;)

My take anyhoo...To live in the moment and remember the past is gone and the future doesn't exist. All we have is what is here and now. Also to remember to differentiate between what we need and what we desire. Because expending energy on searching for the things we desire, we may lose the things we need.

Is everything alright?...usually someone is looking for existential reasoning when things are really bleak.

edited because *&%$ spelling.

Respect, for oneself and for others.
Enjoyment in watching a hummingbird, smelling a rose, looking at a sleeping child.
Knowledge that you are but one small piece of a huge world  waiting there and open for you to enjoy all that Mother Nature has to offer.

And my personal favorite:  Procreation!  Making babies !

(and 480 mg of verapamil)

Feeling better Jean? LMAO!

There is a certain practicality to Don's purposes really.   ;)

Human life obviously belongs to the potentialities of being.  Without fundamental structural presence, struggling with meaning or purpose would not be possible.
After that, then there's that crap about a moral imperative not to waste or destroy our lives and the unconditional imperative to acknowledge every person as a person.
Deciding which way to be, and then the courage to dare a new step.*

I'll go with Don on this one.  ;;D

What is the chief end of humanity?
To love God and enjoy Him forever.

Honestly, you need to find that out for yourself.

For "ME", it's love & belief in God my creator, and through God, the peace and sense of purpose follows.

Hard to explain, but I feel like my reason for being here is just to be me, and be as good of me as I can be.  I am just to be honest & true to myself, and more than that whenever possible.

Life just is.  Looking for meaning is a task that consumes most of our years.  Many find it in belief in something (God, religion, politics, etc). Others are consumed in a search for truth (science, discovery, knowledge).

Personally, I believe life is the avoidance of any type  pain and helping others to avoid pain.  If you're looking for much more than that you are bound to be disappointed at some point.  I too will be disappointed, but every day that does not contain more pain than joy goes in the plus column!

And no, I really don't believe in God, but I do believe in evil.

<Man, this got a bunch more serious than I intended....>

In the natural order of things

Be born and learn from surviving the hazards of youth (Inexperience, Curiosity, Disease, Predators, Starvation).
Utilize skills passed along by a tight knit community containing family members of varing ages and skills.

Select a mate who also learned from surviving the hazards of youth.  Secure shelter based on function over form within a supportive community.

Reproduce and teach your offsping how to survive the hazards of youth.  Depend on support and assistance  from a tight knit community in the development of your offspring.

Work to secure sufficient nourishment.  Kill preditors and die knowing your offspring is part of a supportive community and have been left with better survival skills than you.

Within the unnatural order of things

Be born and shielded from the hazards of youth and suffer from a lack of basic knowlege and skills.  Gain limited skills from independent family members too busy to pay attention in an environment where senior age groups have been removed.

Select mate(s) just as confused and ill equipped for with basic knowledge and skills.  Secure shelter based on form over function in a far off community because a preditor making more money tells you it's the place to buy.  Suffer additional time/resource stresses attempting to retain an unnecessary shelter.

Reproduce & hope/count on someone else to raise your offspring, work excessively to secure nourishment and receive little assistance raising offspring.

Kiss the ass of preditors offering handouts and support for a price.  Pay whatever price preditors are demanding.  Die knowing your offspring don't have a clue and will have no one but preditors to count on for support.

Tom

Wouldn't it be nice if we were all doing this in the natural order of things.  Unfortunately, I'm very much afraid that this world is going the un-natural route these days.

I've observed too many people that are afraid to die because they are afraid they've never lived.  They seem to be full of bitterness and anger.  I'm trying to restucture so as not to live my life without purpose.

Title: Re: Life's purpose

I can say honestly, that I've packed more living into the past two decades, than most people do in a couple of lifetimes. I've gone everywhere I've wanted to go, done everything I've wanted to do, tried hundreds of different hobbies and new skills... This lifetime has held another theme for me, too: Of tying up loose ends with people. I can count, on one hand, the number of people that I've ended relationships on a harsh note with. If my death were to come tomorrow, I would go with only one regret, and that would be not being able to see my daughter grow into an adult. Other than that, my only thought, is that when my death comes, I want to be perfectly lucid, so I can greet it like an old friend and say, "My bags are packed! What took you so long? Let's go!! On to the next adventure!"  :)
