I met a new ~~quack~~ neurologist today and he told me and clarified that medical research has indicated that about 99% of cluster sufferers use tobacco.

So, lets do a poll.
Please indicate whether you use tobacco of any kind, or if you do not.

I do, but trying to stop. Started because of CH, the late nights, the insomnia, the fear, the pain, the loneliness, something to do to take my mind of things and calm me down.

So, for me it is not a cause or a trigger(as some quacks imply).
For me it is a pacifier! :(

I smoked until I was 34. Lemme see.... I began in 1963, got CH in 1969, quit in 1980 and my CH disappeared in 1991. It's all yours. Have fun [smiley=huh.gif]

Actually, I read here once that 47% of the board smoked. That is more than twice the national average. I suppose it should be looked into someday.

I'm passive smoker until I left home have had the occasional smoke (Various types ::)) havent' touched anything in 8 months! diagnosed in 03 left home year before!

But unless little Jabs (Helens 3 year old) is a hundred aday secret smoker He has to be that 1%

Man, i met this neuro cause my past 5 doctors in this system didnt know ANYTHING about CH. I was excited to meet a doc that possibly had more knowledge than me. But it didnt work out that way.
I am a first grader compared to the knowledge base on this board, but i am some sort of genius compared to medical doctors.
This neuro that i met today told me about prednisone, and cafergot, and lithium and a few more things that are old school. He laughed at me when i told him that Kudzu has helped many find relief. And when i asked him about LSA and psilocybin, he nearly pissed himself.
Oh, man, it was a waste of time, but he told me that he would have a script for prednisone ready if i need it for next cycle.

OH, PS, he told me that if you take more than 480 mg a day of verapimil, your heart would stop. He wasnt talking about me, he meant any person.

SO, another quick poll, according to this doctor's info, how many people here have died cause they took over 480 mg a day of verapimil?

From where I sat at the CH convention in 2003 I would agree with this doc.... they definately have a smoking problem.... I would say 80% not 99% though....

I had to quit Verap at 480 mg. I started to get dizzy and have shortness of breath. But there are some here that have tolorated more - Kirk, 960? Man that's a lot!

The majority of people I know taking verap are on over 480mg with about 6-8 people I can think of straight of the top of my head being on over 960 mg a day too... your doctor needs to stand up when he is talking so his speech isn't muffled right??? :-/

Thats as Stretch of statistics by any standard. Regardless I've had two of three neurologists that have said that outside of general health improvements - stopping smoking has proven to have no effect of CH.

Well let see when I was a kid I got 2nd hand smoke from my father. Does that count. He moved out after cheating on mom when I was 13 then I was smoke free from then on and now I am allergic to it. Long story short never smoked and never will.

i hear you langa, the thing is that this IS the new doc.
I have met like 5 or 6 GPs that knew nothing at all about clusters, so i met with this neuro.

So, as a relative newbie to clusters, I'm guessing you guys just use the docs as a means to write a script? You have to go educate the doc and tell them how they can provide you health care, then they write a script?

I see. I guess that'll work.

Though every once in a rare while, you do meet a Neuro that isn't clueless. I just found one last year after 26 years of these things...Key word is education though... ;)

I hope you find a good doc. I have been relatively lucky with Neuro's, but not nearly as lucky with GP's - Either they are clueless, have to bag on America since I am an American living in Canada, or their nurses have been rude. For me it has been hit and miss. The most recent neuro I saw is actually a researcher on cluster, from what I gather. He was cool, but didn't do much for me bacause I told him that I was pretty set on not taking Pred again. He told me once I pass the one-year mark on this cycle to come back to see him and he will suggest a new treatment. (Little does he know I have my own suggested traeatment growing in my closet.)

Anyway, all that is to say that the hassle of finding a good doc, and a good doc's office, is a large part of the battle we face. You know what you need - be it Pred, Verap, Trex, Methysergide, Gabapentin, Oxygen, Whatever - so go in and don't leave until you get it. Tell the dude you want to try something new for you, and if he or she won't give it to you, find a new doc. It sucks, but I think it is common for us.

For a while I thought I would finally find a doc who had an answer...but right now there isn't an answer. Now I just hope for a doc who is cooperative and compassionate, (and who doesn't like to bring up political discussions when I am there for medical purposes).

I'm a yes. But I can quit any time I want. Been there, done that, dozens of times.

Now I only smoke outdoors where the air is clean.

That indoor-second hand-smoke-pollution will give you lung cancer, make your lips wrinkly, and kill you.
