Title: MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT! Post by Langa on Aug 12th, 2005, 12:26pm My co-worker and I just got back from lunch and we’re sick. :-[ On the way back, we saw major commotion at an intersection we needed to drive through to get on the highway back to work. A few minutes prior an SUV and a man on a motorcycle got into an accident. The man that was riding the bike was lying on his side in the middle of the street. It looked like he was holding his head in his hands, probably in agony. I noticed his leg first…actually, no leg from mid-calf down :'(…I just saw a bony stump and blood oozing out of it. People were running to the gas station across the street to get towels to wrap around his leg. He also had a big gash on his lower back and I thought I saw blood coming out of his ear. About 20 feet away I saw his bike on it’s side too…I didn’t see a helmet anywhere though. I'm thinking his leg somehow got caught in the bike or something to be mangled like that... :-[ I hope he's okay and for my family here that ride bikes, please be careful! Langa |

Title: Re: MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT! Post by rextangle on Aug 12th, 2005, 2:48pm Let me guess... the turd jockey driving the SUV was on his cell phone? It has been proven that people who drive and talk are equally dangerous as drunk drivers! GET OFF THE FUCKIN' PHONE AND DRIVE!!!!! >:( I hope the biker will be ok and get rich off that a$$hole! |

Title: Re: MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT! Post by ghost62 on Aug 12th, 2005, 2:52pm Or was the biker blasting the light like most, not all do and got called on it? last week 4 of 4 almost got called on by me, but my wife told me to stop. But got to agree about the cell problem to many people that cant drive already and then think they can talk on the phone while not being able to drive. just not good all ways around that. |

I total agree with you on that one! Have almost been slammed in my little Camry by great big SUV's with yakking drivers on their phones too many times. Don't get me wrong, our second car is an SUV, but the cell phones are shut off while driving - at least for the driver - in BOTH our cars. Sandy |

Title: Re: MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT! Post by ghost62 on Aug 12th, 2005, 4:01pm Got to agree sandy cell off for the driver in any car. but especially those mad, aggressive, mean spirited SUV's, Those things will attack totally unprovoked, so be careful on the roads if you see an unmanned SUV run for the hills. |

Title: Re: MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT! Post by purpleydog on Aug 12th, 2005, 5:03pm I have a healthy respect for motorcycles, I was raised with them. They can stop much faster than my truck, so I give them plenty of room. This afternoon, I was driving a busy 4 lane road, doing 50-55, and this guy on a motorcycle was weaving in and out of traffic, barely leaving enough room for him to get through. No turn signals, no hand signals, several cars had to brake for the guy. If yer gonna ride, you still gotta follow the rules of the road. If yer in another vehicle, you gotta watch out for the guys/ gals on the bikes. It's a two way street. Ride safe, and pay attention to the road. |

Title: Re: MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT! Post by minnie on Aug 12th, 2005, 9:29pm Hope the guy makes it.seems like we've had quite a few truck/motorcycle accidents lately.New york state has the law where you have to have a hands free cell device or pull over.they're supposed to ticket cell phone talking drivers. the idiots still almost run you of the road so they can conetrate on their cell phone and no cops in sight [smiley=mad.gif] Minnie who pulls of to the side of the road or calls people back later P.S.I was afraid to open this thought maybe you or someone here had an accident..glad your ok |

Title: Re: MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT! Post by cootie on Aug 14th, 2005, 2:21pm Sounds like a horrible wreck....too many VEHICLES on the roads these days and too many distractions......and alot of stupid riders and drivers that are in a hurry. We love ridein but must admit it has gotren alot more risky. We were with our friend 3 weeks ago that went way left of center goin up a steep hill in a park around a curve.....he clipped the vehicle with his leg. Had him out to a campgrounds get together this weekend and made him and his wife dinner. His leg looks aweful......has a new device with pins all over it like the halo's they do on necks. Real big.....but his leg was swollen so tight it was shiney and felt HARD. Not a good color either. Hopein they can save it....too soon to know. Everyone needs to stop look and listen Pam |

But, was it the SUV driver on the cell? Or, was it the bike rider? Just a couple of days ago I saw a fat-ass biker chick on the passenger seat talking on the cell...... to the fatter-assed dumb shit sitting in front of her! 10 to rules for motorcycle riders: #1- Don't fall down. #2 thru 9- See rule #1. #10- get off the damn phone! Fact: There are only 2 types of bike riders.....those that have fallen down and those that are going to fall down. Been there, done that! |

Title: Re: MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT! Post by Frank_W on Aug 15th, 2005, 10:57am I'm sorry, Langa. I just don't understand why people don't, at a MINIMUM, wear helmets when they ride. As a medic, I scraped up so many motorcycle accidents... Sometimes, literally. :( :-/ |

Title: Re: MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT! Post by Sandy_C on Aug 15th, 2005, 11:35am :'( Langa, I'm sorry he didn't make it. Jason, my future son-in-law (we hope) had a motorcycle accident about 6 years ago because a pick-up truck ran a stop sign and broadsided him. Broke his pelvis, both legs, massive concussion. They had to drill into his head to relieve pressure on his brain. Was in the hospital for months, then in a wheelchair for several more months. He has pins and screws all over his body holding him together, and a metal plate in his skull. His father quit his job to stay home and take care of his son (what a great guy!), because Jason's mom had the higher paying job and could support the family on her own. Jason no longer had a job, no income, he was 21 years old, and ended up with $400,000 in medical bills neither he nor his parents could pay. He had to file bankruptcy, and his credit report still shows it, although his FICO scores aren't that bad because he is very careful in paying his bills. One of those bills is his payment on his Harley! We like this kid, and we're glad the docs pulled him through so he could meet our daughter! Now, they live together (yes, in sin), and are buying a house together. I sure wish he'd pop the question though, but he said he has to as Christine's father for permission first. Isn't that sooooo cute! ;;D Sandy |

Title: Re: MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT! Post by cootie on Aug 15th, 2005, 11:43am Bein a life member of A.B.A.T.E for many years (American Bikers About Teaching and Educateing) we have a big helmet issue and are NOT against them tho. Problem is how there made.....restricting hearing and with some of the old ones 'vision' and some are too heavy. And most have a sticker inside that says to 'avoid impact' and some information rates them only protective at 16 mph or less. And they have a tendency to bounce when they do hit the road breaking the neck. But "I do agree on the saftey issues of motorcycles".......the new helmets are so expensive which doesn't help the average rider decide in makein a dicsion to buy one. I'd never speak out against someone wearing one.....we are for free choice. But with more riders and drivers and other distractions with cell phones and now the dam picture phones and text messageing and video games on them it has increased the risk. When we go out anywhere I'd say 60 percent of the people are ON a cell and when in town they are playin with there phone text messageing or reading stuff on it (I don't have one) whatever other then PAYING ATTENTION. Alot of accidents in our town the past year cuz of how built up one side of town has gotten and all the stores and malls and MOST PEOPLE were not payin attention and runnin stops slamming people. A girflrid just got t-boned by a young kid that did NOT stop at a sign and hit her hard rolling her truck. She got scalped and thank goodness she did NOT have the baby with her that time which she USUALLY does !! Plains trains automobiles and motorcycles at risk Pam Am so so sorry to hear that guy didn't make it.......people jus need to slow down and watch the road.....it's all a person can ask for to make it 'safer' for us all !!! Be safe everyone and take that extra second to look before ya move on or go thru an intersection. There's been talk of seat belts on bikes and air bags........be interesting what the future holds. |

Title: Re: MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT! Post by Sandy_C on Aug 15th, 2005, 12:02pm Cootie, after listening to my future son-in law Jason talk about helmets and from what you just said, I can understand why most bikers don't like to wear them. I live in NC - helmet laws. My daughter and Jason also live in NC, but his family lives in SC - no helmet laws. We went down to meet Jason's parents this summer. We followed Jason and Christine to his parent's house, some 25 miles on an expressway - 75 - 80 mph - they were on his bike - no helmets. I sat in the passenger seat of our car with my heart in my throat watching my youngest child ride on the back of that little, teeny tiny motorcycle - and it is a BIG Harley! But in comparison to all of the other vehicles on the road, it looked like a tricycle! As a Mom - helmets, please! Also, your comment on running red lights - call me old fashioned, or call me just old - if I'm sitting at a red light, and it turns green, guess what. My foot stays on that brake for a second while I look to my right and my left before proceeding through. Yes, I have the right of way - no question. But, it's not worth dying for because invariably, someone, trying to beat the yellow light, blows through the intersection against the red. Better safe than sorry. |

Title: Re: MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT! Post by Frank_W on Aug 15th, 2005, 12:08pm I understand, Cootie. There are certainly just as many arguments against helmets as there are, for them. I've seen some nasty, nasty accidents though, even at very low speeds, and so much damage could have been prevented by wearing a helmet. Then again, who am I kidding? I drive around all the time in my Jeep with the windshield down, wearing a pair of tank goggles. LMAO |

Title: Re: MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT! Post by cootie on Aug 15th, 2005, 12:24pm Myself I do NOT care for ridein on the bike on the highway AT ALL but sometimes it's the route Brad takes to get somewhere easier.....I prefer the back routes but lately they are almost worse with kids raceing playin chicken in the road so they can have somethin to talk about later and all the havoc they reeked scarein people and each other.....they do it out here !!! Or ya come up over a slight hill and dumb ass people are over too far and about side swipe you or whatever......turns too wide is anouther issue. I am like you Sandy......when I am at a stop sign I look back and forth at least 6 times......I could not handle causeing an accident bein in a hurry and takeing off could cause. I slow way down at bad intersections ASUMEING someone WILL take off out in front of me which happens alot. So even if I avoided something that wasn't MY FAULT I saved some anguish of it all. I don't even care to drive at nite anymore......and rather ride at nite with others not alone if possible. And I know what you are saying Frank.......it's a catch 22 with helmets.....they can cause deaths and they can prevent them......too bad it can't be simplier then that. Even if you are the best most cautious driver or rider in the world you can get slammed pullin out of your own driveway for not looking twice yourself and the person that hits you not looking at all to prevent it. Ya gotta drive as if everyone is out to kill you and never be in a rush to pull out.....take an extra second to look again. Helmets are a big issue when there are more recorded accidents of course yet they don't always mention how many more riders and drivers there are. Kids seem to thinks breaks mean STOP on a dime and we've had a large amount of them finding out differently this summer. Seems "some" of the problem needs to be looked at with young new drivers.....and elderly people that can NOT see or hear that can still pass there test. My mom's freind that turned 90 failed his driver test so they sent him to anouther testing area that WOULD pass him and they did !!!!! I was enraged about it knowing the guy and how bad he is and all....sure enuff withing a month he ran a stop and hit someone !!!!!!! So the blame lays in all areas. Saftey is in the eye of the beholder Pam Highway funding will be issues for states not supporting helmet laws soon enuff and more change over......depends on the areas but that has changed the limits to pass breathilizers too. Either go with it or loose funding. It is pretty much zero tolerance around here.....which is what DUI means....under the influence can mean half a beer. How do you make things safer in an unsafe world ? |
||
Title: Re: MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT! Post by Frank_W on Aug 15th, 2005, 12:38pm I agree with all you've written here, Coots. Just to play devil's advocate, I also think mandatory helmet and seatbelt laws should be repealed. Put the responsibility and the choice back in the hands of the motorists. I also recognize the fact that this view isn't popular, and even if the laws were repealed, I would still wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle, and I would still wear my seatbelt or harness when driving my Jeep. Here's something stupid: My four-point harness in my Jeep is infinitely safer in a wreck or rollover, but because it's not DOT approved, I still have to use the flimsy-azzed factory seatbelt. Good grief.... |
||
Title: Re: MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT! Post by cootie on Aug 15th, 2005, 3:29pm I always wear a seatbelt.......that's a big issue with bikes too with being FLUNG.......and more chances of injurys. We have a midnight run comeing up called the Night of Lights.....I hate it......but a group all goes every year. Gold Wingers put it on and were about the only Harley's that shake up the noise factor. Anyhow....nice group of people that put it on and good cause. Thing is it runs thru amish country all over around here and they are out LATE and alot of them out here do not beleive in any reflectors or lights which pisses me off. Bunch of them were goin home from a sale the first time we went on the run and everyone about slammed into them several times......scart the crap out of me cuz ya come up on em fast and can't figure out what they are at first !! One guy had a mile high pile of rusty junk on a wagon and no lights or anything and he climbed up on top of his crap with a flashlight to get our attention.....man that was a close call cuz you could not make it out in the dark like that. Lots of buggies were out........I realize they have rights to be on the roads but if we were out there at nite with no lights we'd get in trouble !!! But if ya rear end one it is YOUR fault !!!! Been alot of that happen around here too. I'm not too thrilled about the upcomieng Buggy fright nite Pam |

Had a couple friends die in an accident not long after that also, they poped over an irrigation canal bridge and hit a semis flatbed trailor, it wasnt a pretty sight........... |

Title: Re: MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT! Post by lady_bug on Aug 15th, 2005, 4:06pm Oh Maria, I'm so sorry you had to witness that horrible accident! :'( I lost a 19 year old cousin in a motorcycle accident a few years ago...he was wearing a helmet. Randy has talked a few times about buying a Harley...I don't think he will though because he knows how much it scares me. |
