Was getting ready to walk out the door to go to work when live coverage came on. Needless to say, I was late for work, but who gives a ****! A very large WHEW, and thank you God on this one.

Well - I was hoping they'd have been landing at the prior 4 something AM time because I get up between 4 and 5, but I'm glad they waited for more safe weather!! I didn't get to see it because I was at work then!!

I've been a NASA freak for as long as I can remember. In March of 2001, my best friend Cathy and I were visiting my grandparents in Sarasota for spring break. We took a 2 day trip over to Cape Canaveral. My grandfather paid for us to take an extra part on the tour - got to get a little closer and see a little more.....I'm sure after 9/11 and everything else, they no longer allow this. I saw parts of the International Space Station being built.

I also got to see Discovery on the launch pad. One of the most amazing things was seeing the shuttle Columbia being flown piggy back on the back of a jet to get back to Florida from California where it had landed from the previous flight. The tour guide said it was a really rare thing to get to see. It was incredible!!!

I have pictures of everything from that trip. I have to scan them into the 'puter because I didn't have a digital camera back then. I really want to look back on the photos because so much has happened with NASA since then....both the happy and the sad. Columbia was such a horrible tragedy - and one that will never be forgotten. Also, I think it has changed the media involvement in all things NASA and this time around, we heard every detail of the Discovery flight - whereas before we never heard so much information.

Kind of the same concept as what happened after Apollo 13..... They weren't interested in covering Apollo 13 in the media because space flight to the moon had become 'routine' but once things went bad, the media went crazy over it. I've got the book written by Jim Lovell (called lost moon) and also Armstrong's book called 'First on the Moon.' Great books!!

For my 21st birthday, my best friend Steve sent me an application to the space program. Steve, Cathy, and I always wanted to go on the same mission! LOL

I'm so incredibly happy and relieved that Discovery has made it home safely. I do hope that NASA will not shut down all missions after this - but rather inspect things even more closely and allow space flight to continue. The captain of that crew really said it best when she talked about the fact that the astronauts know there are always risks, but they are risks that they've signed on to take - they want to continue to fly because of how much good they can do.
