Title: My "flipper" is no good!
Post by blossom on Aug 6th, 2005, 11:12pm
So I had a wierd thing happen today - well, not surprising since it is me and I always have strange things happen!  Anyway, I was sitting at my kitchen table talking to my sister, Ellen, and all the sudden my "flipper" finger started tingling.  It literally turned black and blue & swelled to 2 times it's normal size in 10 minutes.  I didn't hit it on anything or get bit by anything that we can see.  It's still enormous and the bruising is spreading around to the front of the finger now.  It is so strange.  I have never had anything like this before!  Any ideas what it could be?

Are you on any new meds or treatments Karen? Something that might affect circulation?

I'm back on the Verelan and took Fiorcet earlier for a migraine (no mee-graine comments please!) - my dad suggested it might me a burst blood vessel BUT I have had those several times and it hurts like the dickens when it bursts and there was NO pain at all.  There is now because of the swelling and bruising but I didn't feel anything at all before I noticed it.  I will have Chris take a picture in the morning and I will post it.  I just looked at it and the bruising is now up around my fingernail.  It is just so strange.

I think maybe you should get it checked. If you don't remember hurting it and it doesn't hurt... well that's just odd.

That's what I was thinking was a broken vein......but yeah they usually do hurt but alot of the pain is the fluid or blood filling the surrounding tissue like a shot. Hope it is ok. Brad had his big toe do that last week.....it suddenly started to swell and got really red and then it started to hurt. He didn't hit it on anything or nothin so we figured a broken vein. But yeah.....mite wanna get it checked out and not have that happen anywhere else is sumthin is causeing it. Blues clues Pam

For your own peace of mind, get it looked at. A broken vessel or some strange reaction sounds as likely as anything.

BTDT...

... but it was during a sex-for-one session.  I highly doubt it's related.

This is a test... this is only a test...

Put the index finger of your good hand that does not have the flipper finger problem on the pulse on the inside of the wrist of the hand that has the flipper finger problem. Does the pulse to the bad flipper finger hand feel normal and strong? Now put the index finger of your good hand against your carotid arteries in your neck and feel the pulse there. Is the blood supply to your hand with the bad flipper finger blocked? Report back to us immediately, please.

This may sound too simple but check and see if there is a hair wrapped around the finger.Hair can be so fine you may not see it.it should feel like cutting into the skin but check it out anyways.hope it's nothing serious.
            Minnie

As a side note for all you future mommy and Daddie's
if your little one gets crying and you can't settle them down check there feet for this also. It's happened many
times and in doing your usual checklist of what may be wrong you don't think of their legs or feet.my advice is always take there clothes off and do a head to toe check.simple advice but when you've been up all night with a crying baby it can be the simple things you miss.
 just me rattling on.......minnie

Well, I'm assuming it's the middle finger? The one you use to flip someone?

Seriously, go to the ER!!!
Sounds like gangrene to me, and that leads to a quick amputation...  GO NOW!

Good luck to you

Please go to the doc ASAP. I wouldn't wait from the description it sounds fairly serious. I hope things are minor but it is best to find out from a pro; not from your fellow board members.

Pulse is good.  Actually the only place on my finger now that is not bruised is the tip and from the second knuckle down on the front side of my finger.  The bruise has just spread out all over the finger.  The swelling is down considerably BUT I think I am still going to run to the urgent care after work tomorrow night.  I'll let y'all know what I find out.  Chris says it is definately abnormal because if it was something normal it wouldn't be me!  Do you think that might have been some sort of insult?   ::)  I have been bruising very badly lately so I think I need to have some blood work done - was going to wait for the neuro but I will see my PCP before then.  I'm off on Wednesday so I will make an appointment.  Thanks guys.  I swear I'm staring down the barrell of 30 and all the sudden my body starts giving out on me.  What a crock of crap!   :-/

My step dad takes meds he "HAS" to take that make him bruise like crazy......freaked me out at first but am gettin used to it. If one of my dogs jumps on him he will get terrible bruiseing. So it could be meds or a medical condition you DO need checked out NOW so it don't get serious. Good luck...........Bruised and contused Pam

Definitely needs a doc.  It could be a spider bite.  You don't wanna lose that finger do you?

The finger is MUCH better.  Bruising is fading fast and the swelling is almost completely gone.  It was just a ruptured blood vessel.  Still having the blood work drawn when my doctor gets back from vacation.  I'm getting really irritated with that man.   >:(  He has more vacation time than Paris Hilton, I swear!  I will keep you all updated when I find out more.  Not to worry, I was kind of jolted into realizing how important it is to stay on top of things today.  I'm starting a new thread about that.
