Title: Random Pricks reduce headaches! Post by ben_uk on Aug 5th, 2005, 4:54am [smiley=laugh.gif] 06 August 2005 From New Scientist http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=mg18725113.900 http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/cgi/content/abstract/bmj.38512.405440.8Fv1?maxtoshow=&HITS=10&hits=10&RESULTFORMAT=&fulltext=headache&andorexactfulltext=and&searchid=1123234626897_2259&stored_search=&FIRSTINDEX=0&sortspec=relevance&resourcetype=1 Needle match Inserting acupuncture needles in random places in the body is just as effective as placing them at traditional acupuncture points. So say doctors in Munich who treated 270 tension headache sufferers with either traditional or random needle placement. Both methods reduced headache occurrences by about half (British Medical Journal, DOI: 10.1136/bmj.38512.405440.8F). :o |

Title: Re: Random Pricks reduce headaches! Post by Frank_W on Aug 5th, 2005, 7:21am Since I've quit smoking, I've been somewhat of a random prick. >:( [smiley=laugh.gif] You can prick your finger in public, no problem. If you finger your prick in public, it usually means probation and community service. :-/ [smiley=laugh.gif] |

I wonder how the supporters of the 'meridian' theory will wiggle out. ;;D I wish I was the patent holder of the drug 'Placebo', I'd be a rich man. [smiley=smokin.gif] |

Your conclusions are rather different than the researchers who carried out the work - they concluded that "The acupuncture intervention investigated in this trial was more effective than no treatment but not significantly more effective than minimal acupuncture for the treatment of tension-type headache." It does suggest that some of the effects of acupuncture are not dependent on meridians, but that is a statement most acupuncturists would agree with (independent of the issue of whether meridians with specific effects exist). |
