Title: I Am Being Tormented By Another BEAST!
Post by Carl_D on Jul 31st, 2005, 3:46pm
I have been staying with my friends John Mark and Michelle the past couple of weeks. He left over a week ago to spend 3 weeks in Belgium with his family, and Michelle went to the Ozarks for the weekend, so I have been here by myself since Wednesday.

By myself, but not alone by any stretch of the word.

I am very allergic to cats, and Michelle has this big french gray cat named Tekno. He is a pretty cat, and very very affectionate. He will NOT leave me alone. He is constantly rubbing up on me, jumping into my lap... I even awoke one night to find him right next to my head in bed with me.  I'll play with him and wash my hands afterwards, but that doesn't seem to be enough to keep him happy.

Michelle told me "Don't let him dominate you because once a cat dominates a person, they never let up." She also told me to feed him once a day. That, in theory is fine, except once his food dish is empty, he will come rubbbing against me, meowing nonstop, and at some points even sounds like he is crying. He won't leave me alone, not for one minute. He even tries to follow me into the bathroom. Finally, last night I gave in, and put a little extra food in his bowl, but that wasn't enough.
I woke up with an attack this morning, and heard him crying and trying to open the door by jumping up and rattling the handle. I gave in and fed him early.
All I can say is, this gives the term "P*u*s*s*y*whipped a whole new meaning. OY!

Feline frantic,
Carl D

Close BR door at night.  My cats try to get more food out of me as well but I just talk back to them and after awhile they give up once they know mom isn't giving in.  Get benadryl for the cat allergies.  Cats tend to be attracted to those that are allergic or don't like them.  The rubbing up on you isn't so much affection as it is marking  you.  By the way the cat is testing you just like a kid would.  Seeing what they can get away with.  Mastivious little things....Have two...Kim

Yep! That's how we cured one of our cats from yowling outside our bedroom door at 6 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. I'd open the door and spray him in the face everytime he did it. After only the third time, he quit doing it.

Get one of those big squirt bottles like people use for barbecuing. Fill it full of water and give kitty a zap with it, whenever she does something that you don't want her to do.

If she still won't behave, then you can introduce her to Mister Blender, Mister Clothes Dryer, Mister Garbage Disposal, Mister Trash Compactor, or Mister Toilet.

May the Force be with you.  [smiley=laugh.gif]

Hey Frank,

What about that whole Cat Carrier contraption?   [smiley=laugh.gif]

So I'm allowed to have a cat in the new apartment - my mom said today that it makes her nervous because some cats spray, and she didn't know what types do that...so she didn't know what kind of cat I should get.

Any advice?  hehe  I really don't want my apartment to smell for the end of time!  Also.....it's not a big place - so  if getting a cat is gonna make it stinky, I want to know now!  LOL

Carrie its only male cats that are "intact" that spray.. the answer is to have them castrated or have a girl cat!
Either way neutered cats are better because you don't need the problems for a randy tom or a female in season with a 100 randy toms trying to get in follwed by a litter of kittens!

Helen--

Oh yes!  I'll agree with that whole neutered thing.  I know that some people have problems with it, but our lab is neutered, and our last lab was not.  This lab is MUCH more behaved!  Our last one ran away all the time!!

So....is any particular cat better than another?  Do you get them declawed?  I like the cute 'typical' housecat - but frankly I know absolutely nothing about cats!

Carrie :)

Believe it or not FEMALE cats also spray......I used to raise siamse and exotic siamse for years.......my one female would spray in the bathroom on the curtain under the sink.....first time saw it I about fell over.....then I seen the ferile female calico outside cat spray so far it went thru the shrub......unbelievable. Answer of course is fixing the house pet male or female. I think males 'tend' to be more independant and females a bit more undependant. My males are great I have in the house (5) but females tended to be moody. (imagine that) I love em all.......oh and Carl.....since it is basically the cats house you will have to figure out a happy meduim. Cats don't like citrus......so maybe you can buy a spray for outside your door safe for cats.....(I hate the smell of NO spray tho).....my cats have big feeders full all the time and huge water'r. Mixed meows Pam

Also........lill tip: hissing or doing a LOUD psssssssst to a cat freaks them out and they usually RUN.

PS: Probly is a good idea to have one declaw'd and fixed at the same time depending on age....and depends on condition and if your vet agrees. Not all will do both at once. But it is one less tramatic visit to the vets. Cats need to scratch to shed there nail sheaths.....it's not to be distructive 'on purpose' but more or less something they need to do. There is a brand new nail inside the old one that falls off but needs to split underneath to fall off properly. People think cats do it to be bad.....and with some bad habits are hard to break. If you don't want to deal with that and torn furniture corners you mite want to declaw them. I'm not dead set on haveing it done myself only because it can make a cats feet so tender they will no longer scratch to use a cat box. I have seen it happen.....the last cat I had declawed was a big snowshoe siamese and her feet were very tender and she girl thingy footed all around the house so to speak. Depends on how the vet does it I am sure and age maybe or the cat skin type (she had pink pods).......there are always exceptions. I LOVE cats !!! >^..^<

Usually male ginger cats have a very strong musky odour.  It is also hard to predict what your cats personality is going to be like when you get them very young.

So it is touch and go with getting a cat as they are very individual with definite strong personalities but a great household member to have around.

You never own a cat, you are usually owned by a cat. ;)

Title: Re: I Am Being Tormented By Another BEAST!
Post by Frank_W on Jul 31st, 2005, 6:28pm
LMAO, Helen!

I would get a female cat, Carrie. Never declaw cats -- It messes up their balance, and worse than that, it makes them even more neurotic than they normally are. You can keep their claws trimmed with a pair of cuticle scissors. A cat's claws are very very important to them, even if they are strictly indoor cats.

As for spaying or neutering: Get it done. Usually, the age of 4 months is when a vet will neuter a male, and I think females might be 6 months... But yes, please get it done. Cats' hormones really really mess them up, and spayed or neutered cats live longer. Also, you won't be able to stand being in the same apartment with a cat that's in heat. Trust me on this.

Good luck! :)

If you're smart, get the cat idea out of your head asap and don't look back.  If you gotta have one, have it fixed and declawed. They stink and they will rip your stuff to shreads !!! I guess you can tell I hate cats. lol

Carl, sorry to hear ya gotta deal with such a pesky critter. Lock em' up.  [smiley=laugh.gif]

My kitty is a dainty little princess and people who come to my house can't believe I have a cat. There is no smell. She is fixed and declawed. She shakes her paws still from time to time. Cna;t get over that one. Too funny. Sorry guys but I have good furniture and had to do it. She is the most affectionate people oriented cat I have ever seen.

Hey Frank Post a pic of your kitty. It was soooo cute.

Learn how to hiss and meowl like a cat about to attack. The cat will bolt away from you. If you do it right, just a little one is all that is needed to show some dominance.

Cats are funny little critters with personality - that's what's I like about em'.  Our oldest cat was de-clawed eight years ago and she still holds her paws up when she's looking for a little sympathy.  She's small but keeps our other cat an dog in line, she is the queen.

Our newest cat is another adopted stray.  When we took him in he had a broken back leg, we call him Hoppy.  He really believes he's a dog, walks on a leash, lays in the middle of everything, greets people at the door, etc.

His game is escape - not to run away, just escape.  Once he's out he waits for you to pick him up and take him back in.  One time he got out without anyone noticing.  We found him plastered to our porch window  a few hours later demanding re-entry.

Both cats like our dog more than they like each other. It's a howl to watch em' interact.

Good luck dealing with your situation - that cat seems to have your number.

Tom

Remove cat's whiskers and set aside.

Wash your hands then bring a very large, clean  pot of water to the boil.  Add two axe-heads and a little salt, then gently stir in cat.  Simmer for two days.

Throw cat away and eat axe-heads garnished with the whiskers.

(Note:  This soup makes you very smart because Leunig told me so.)

Also........keep you cat inside !! A healthy cat lives indoors........but of course there are exceptions. But ya don't want to have to go thru what I did the other day when one of my wild outside kittens got ran over. I noticed something in the road.....blech I hated to have to look or see it......so I got my big shovel and headed out front to the road. As I stood there two more cars went by being NOSEY stareing at me. Frump frump.......frump frump......that little kitty died as a big dead cat. I had to practially SQUEEDZIE  it up and off the road I had a coal shovel and it didn't fit . About thru it at that last vehicle but I needed it. Ahhhhh.....the humanity Pam  :P  :-[

AHHHH! Thanks for all the excellent advice.
I forgot about my wicked hiss that I freak out cats with.

YEP! It Worked!!! LMAO

My niece had some of her friends over one day and they had a rabbit they were trying to get rid of. They asked me if I wanted it and I said "Sure. I have a few rabbit recipes I'd like to try out." Needless to say, they took the bunny with them.

Drat! And here I was wondering how rabbit sauteed in onion and garlic would taste fresh off of the grill.  [smiley=laugh.gif]

Peace,

Cats are lovely little creatures. But still when I have a place of my own I think I'll have a quinea pig. I bet I can't find a cat so fine my former landlady had in London so I won't even try.  ;;D

But somehow I think that I will never ask Carl to take care my quinea pig... ;;D

Get a cat from your local shelter.  You can go and find the cat/kitten that is right for you.  If the cat is a bit older, they are almost always spayed/neutered.  If they are kittens, usually the shelter (ours does at least) will give you a spay/neuter certificate.  Declawing?  My oldest male cat was declawed and when he escaped outside (as he was wont to do), I would panic because I knew he couldn't defend himself.  My old cat, Owlie, is not declawed (and yes I have some ruined furniture), BUT when I bought her a scratcing board at Wal Wart (you can buy them pretty much anywhere), the clawing stopped.  In fact, not only does she love to claw on it, it's her favorite sleeping place.

GOOD IDEA about the shelter carolyn~aka~deltadarlin.....I was goin to mention that also......but.......if Carl's shelter is anything like ours out here I sorta had second thoughts to bring the idea up. ALOT of good cats and kittens at the shelters and some already fixed and declawed. I am against fixing a male TOO young (before 6 months) because of the problems with the urinery infections cuz the track did not have time to develeope and too small. Exceptions again to this rule also. Anyhow.....back to our shelter in town. You have to OWN your own home to adopt or have a written letter from a landlord you are allowed to own a pet. If a renter your income is also checked and some may be refused because of localities I heard. Also if yoy are low income you can NOT adopt. They will check all that out and decide for you. Pisses me off cuz at least it is ONE MORE CHANCE for these animals.....!! I was turned down when I tried to adopt a tortishell Burmese young cat because I had adopted two animals before and they had no proof I had had them fixed. The lady told me I could get into serious trouble because of it. Me and this cat bonded instantly and I had to put it back and it kept grabin the side of the bars refuseing to go back in. I CRIED all the way home and for days after that. I take GOOD care of my animals dam it.....they had NO RIGHT. Didn't get the one dog fixed I had that lived to be in her teens cuz it was pregnant I found out when we got her home so I missed my time loop to get a discount. Didn't fix the toy terrier cuz it was one STRANGE dog and humped and pee'd on everything in site and would not let me get out of it's site or it would totally flip out and crap and pee itself. I found it a REALLY good home with a single parent and NO other pets. He pee'd on my cats all the time. So anyhow............I have a love/hate relationship with the humane society......at least ours I do. Done somebody wrong Pam

I was blessed with an extraordinary cat, she won't use a litter box, if she has to do her thing she will scratch at the door and go outside. She attacks strangers when they walk near her and nobody is stranger than me, she wakes my wife up in the middle of the night by chewing on her hair and she attacks the dog.

I hate cats but this one is ok in my book. I taught her everything I know.

We went through a similar situation with the local Humane Society shelter, Coots. The conditions THEY had those cats living in were HORRIBLE, and they had the nerve to tell us that they wouldn't be able to give us a cat until they met and voted on it. I told them to stick it in their ass. You'd think they'd be glad to get rid of some of the cats, especially with the squalor they had them living in!  >:(

We got a little gray male with yellow eyes, from a friend of ours, who owns a horse farm.
