Title: Good News about Mom... Post by Redd715 on Jul 29th, 2005, 6:27pm It's been almost a year since Mom's colon cancer surgery and the news today was wonderful to hear. He weight is steady, her blood work is the best it's been since I cant remember when. The CRC scan dropped from a worry-some 3.0 in April to a 1.4 this time. October will bring another barium CT of the colon, and if all remains well, they are going to go in and snip the remaining polups after the first of the year...and then checkups again for a year at quarterly intervals, then drop back to very 6 months if all remains well. This has been the best report to date on her recovery. And she is definately in good spirits. As for the dementia, she was having a very good day with that as well, as she recognised me right away, and greated me with a big smile, and not her usual "who are you again" confusion. We had a different Oncologist and when he asked her who I was she even knew my name. It was a good day all in all....It was nice to see Mom more as she used to be..not as she usually is with the dementia. I know some of you can't relate to this...But to hear her say to the Doctor.."Oh that is my daughter Peggy" was music to my ears. |

Title: Re: Good News about Mom... Post by nani on Jul 29th, 2005, 7:15pm That's wonderful news, Pegg. :D Now you must be sure to enjoy every lucid moment she has. Although it's funny, in a way... Dementia caused my grandmother to drop all her "grandmotherly pretenses" and when she'd forget who I was, she treated me like her girlfriend. It was fun, and I really got to know her better. hugs, nani |

Title: Re: Good News about Mom... Post by mcf69 on Jul 29th, 2005, 10:46pm Great news Peg, it is really amazing what they can do for cancer now compared to even 5 years ago. Take everyday as a miracle, and don't forget to tell her you love her every chance you get. BTW- make sure you ask the doctor about doing a PET scan, it often picks up things that blood work and other scans may miss. The doctor who treated my Mom recomends everyone recovering from cancer should have one every six months or so. |

Title: Re: Good News about Mom... Post by Redd715 on Jul 30th, 2005, 12:22am Thank you all for the support. I mean that. It's been a rough road with Mom for a while, and there seems to be a light at the end of this cancer tunnel. Lewy Body Dementia is a fast progressing disease, unlike Alzheimers (sp) which is a slower progression, and also effects other neuological functions depending on the location of the deposits of the Lewy Body's within the neurons. Sorry alot of thechnical garbage you really don't care to know about. It was just a great day that I will hold in my memory for years to come. Thanks again to everyone. Luv you all, Pegg |

And low and behold they are based right here in WI, this is just way too awesome! http://www.lewybodydementia.org/index.html I've already contacted them, applied for the caregivers support group, and offered my assistance with the Org. |
