Title: Time for round three - ding ding Post by Topical on Jul 28th, 2005, 9:02pm Yesterday was election day here in SD to replace the previous acting mayor who lasted one day in office before being convicted on felony charges. The mayor he replaced resigned after being called the worst in the nation. He is now being investigated by the feds. Frye came in first place in the primary with 43.3 percent of the vote. Sanders earned 27 percent. Francis got 23.5 percent. Being that Frye didn't get over 50 percent of the vote we are going to have a run off election that will cost our near bankrupt city even more money. From the SD news: Technically, the mayoral race is nonpartisan, but Francis had won the Republican Party's endorsement in the primary. Francis and Sanders are both Republicans, Frye is a Democrat. Sanders said he would seek the Republican Party's endorsement but stressed during a morning news conference that he was running as a nonpartisan. "This is a nonpartisan race," he said. ******************************* He is seeking the republican party's backing, so he can keep this a "nonpartisan race"? Another politician who lies through their teeth as they smile and my city goes down the tubes financially. *sigh* His political campaign is running on a deficit. Donna Frye gave a nice zinger in one of the debates when questioned about the financial woes of the city. Paraphrasing, "Unlike my opponents I will run the city as I do my campaign. The budget will be balanced." The other candidates sat there silent. Round 1 - Murphy wins by 300 votes over write-in Frye. One month later Murphy announces his resignation. Round 2 - Frye wins. Round 3 - ? Oh, the city also passed a measure that will give a cross memorial to the federal govenment. The problem is that crosses are not allowed on federal land so that is going to be challenged. Backers wanted to give it away to avoid a court order as crosses are not allowed on local government land either. The cross looks like concrete cinder blocks placed on top of one another and is falling apart It lies on the most valuable free real estate left in the city. The city tried to sell it for one dollar but that didn't go over well with the city attorney. Too bad the city's wealthy people are more intent on buying another mayor than buying the run-down memorial. |

Title: Re: Time for round three - ding ding Post by Kris_in_SJ on Jul 28th, 2005, 9:10pm Don't you just LOVE local politics. Your town sound alot like Benton Harbor, Michigan - just across the river from where I live. When they aren't firing someone, they're electing someone who will eventually lose because of a recall vote. I can barely remember a mayor who served his/her full term. At any rate, it makes for a good chuckle when reading the evening newspaper. Kris |

Title: Re: Time for round three - ding ding Post by Topical on Jul 28th, 2005, 10:18pm It's a hilarious saga. Donna Frye is the only one that questioned things on the council as things were falling apart. She is going to rip him in the debates so this should be fairly funny. (Provided Karl Rove doesn't turn up). One of the businessmen that lost said he would run the city like he did his company. Cut 10 percent personnel in every department except police and fire. That didn't go over too well. I think he went back to oursource some more people in his "successful" company. :) |

Title: Re: Time for round three - ding ding Post by Topical on Jul 29th, 2005, 3:17am Cerberus - I wish they would. Instead the crooks wanted to build another ball park like they did the Padres. The Chargers locker rooms are too small and there aren't enough sky boxes for the rich folks at the current stadium. I kid you not. Those were the reasons we should build a new stadium. *sigh* The NFL is also threatening to not come here for the super bowl unless it is done. |
