Title: Costochondritis ? OT Post by minnie on Jul 27th, 2005, 9:41pm Has anyone here been diagnosed with this ? for the last week and a half it's been pain full to breath and my ribs are real sore from the front all the way around to my back. The doctor originally thought I was getting shingles but no rash appeared. They say stress affects it but right now I can't eleminate the stress in my life :(. Any info from someone who's had this is appreciated.sorry I know this is a board for clusters.but I know my ch family has been about through everything. Minnie edit :a description....Costochondritis is an inflammation of the junctions where the upper ribs join with the cartilage that holds them to the breastbone or sternum. Costochondritis causes mild to severe pain in the lower rib area or upper breastbone. Some patients fear they are having a heart attack. The most severe pain is usually in the lower rib area between the breast and upper abdomen. The pain may be more noticeable in sitting or reclining positions, and stress is known to aggravate this condition. Stress may aggravate this condition. Generally the third or fourth ribs are affected. However, any of the seven costochondral junctions may be affected, and more often than not more than one site is involved. The inflammation can involve cartilage areas on both sides of the sternum, but usually is on one side only. Costochondritis should be distinguished from Tietze Syndrome, which is an inflammation involving the same area of the chest, but also includes swelling. |

Title: Re: Costochondritis ? OT Post by alienspacebabe on Jul 27th, 2005, 9:44pm I had something that hurt in the same sort of way. Doctor diagnosed it as pleurisy, which was described to me as an inflamation of the lining around the lungs. Treatment was 800mg of ibuprofen every 6 hours. Wish I could be more help. |

Title: Re: Costochondritis ? OT Post by Lizzie2 on Jul 27th, 2005, 9:52pm You'd have to check with your doctor or pharmacist, but I've had it a few times, and my one doc told me to take motrin for about 6 days. It did always go away, but it hurt like the devil!! First time, I had it for several days before getting it finally diagnosed.... In the middle of the night one night, I was pretty sure I was going to die - thought it was cardiac! Just some very inflamed rib cartilage! It made me cough a whole lot...which just hurt that much more! Get better soon!!! Hugzzzzzzzz Lizzie :) |

Title: Re: Costochondritis ? OT Post by cootie on Jul 27th, 2005, 10:29pm I think I have had that b-4 and I am NOT a hypocondriac either......too many horse wrecks........I well earn'd my crap. But it sounds familiar after I tore all my ribs off the front (floating ribs) from an accident involveing a saddle horn and a rib cage only it was caught up inside and the horse got back up and thrust forward. I had alot of problems with pain like you mentiond after they began to heal and stop'd moveing but was never diagnosed with anything cuz I thought it was all part of it. Dunno.......not sure of the causes of it tho.......not had the time to look it up. I've had shingles tho.......and have the deep scars to prove it on my forehead. Funked up Pam |

Title: Re: Costochondritis ? OT Post by Dave0377 on Jul 27th, 2005, 10:44pm If it were me, I would just take some some advil for a few days and see if it got any better. But, I'm a hockey player and a former full contact TaeKwonDo fighter so I only go to the Dr. when something is falling off or I think I'm going to die. Carrie yells at me for it, but I'm prone to injuries so if I went to the doctor for everything, my file would be 10x thicker than it already is (and it's pretty damn thick!). [smiley=laugh.gif] Anyway, don't listen to me....Carrie, RN is the expert ;) |

Title: Re: Costochondritis ? OT Post by cootie on Jul 27th, 2005, 11:05pm You'll probly PAY for somea them injuries 'someday' on down the line Dave......I know I am and I never went to the doc for half my accidents even tho I had broken STUFF. Findin out somea them accidents brushed off and crawled out of were pretty dam serious. Seems to me tho that Nurse Carrie should be able to doctor ya up pretty good.......sticks and stones have broke my bones Pam |

Title: Re: Costochondritis ? OT Post by Dave0377 on Jul 27th, 2005, 11:15pm Oh trust me, Im paying for some of them already! I have a pinky finger that literally loos like an S from being dislocated so many times. I have a wrist that won't heal (because I refuse to take the time off necessary to let it heal completely before I reinjure it playing hockey or lifting at the gym...lol). Oh and I have a neck thing going on that I can't quite figure out...I need a chiropractor for that one. I'm sure Carrie will tie me up when I'm sleeping one night and drag me to the doctor the next time I hurt something. LMAO |

Title: Re: Costochondritis ? OT Post by cootie on Jul 28th, 2005, 6:37pm Yeah giff that's just it......the neighbors up behind us on the hill had a bunch of pot plants growin and think alot of it was my way.......we share as steep hill behind us and man oh man they could of easily blamed us I thinks. Cuz I used to take walks up there to check fence.....had it all in single wire with several strands on the flat top surface my horse ran around on and rolled on and hung out on I had to check alot or jus took walks up there. They could of thought I was checkin MY SHIT.......so I stay clear of growin it now. Chipmunks and squirrels got the last seeds I tried to grow along the creek out back for the hell of it years ago.......course then they probly buried some and forgot about it......so keep wonderin if there is a MYSTERY STASH growin somewhere near here ? Buy sell trade Pam |
