SQUIRREL FIRES REGULAR OCCURRENCE IN CANADIAN BORDER TOWN

The Associated Press

OSOYOOS, British Columbia — Once again, a squirrel clambering onto a power line has been blamed for a brush fire in this border town north of Oroville, Wash.

Firefighters were summoned Monday after a squirrel scrambled up a Fortis Inc. utility pole, got zapped and landed in flames on some dry brush outside a fruit packing business, Fire Chief Ross Driver said.

By the time a pumper truck and a bush truck arrived, nearby residents had doused the flames.

"This identical incident has happened on the same pole one or two times a year for the past several years," Driver said.

Each time, firefighters find a dead, burned squirrel at the base of the utility pole, he said.

Driver said he didn't know what Fortis could do to prevent future squirrel-caused fires.

we had a kamakazi squirrel do that in our back yard one year too.  Didn't start a fire but did fry himself pretty badly on our power pole - knocked our power out for an hour or so.  He did live to tell about it though, he was still alive when we moved a few years later.  How do I know it was the same squirrel, you ask?  Pretty easy to pick that little dude out of a crowd.  Squirrels really aren't all that cute when they're completely bald.   :-/

We might be headed down Osoyoos way this weekend, actually - gorgeous country, Canada's very own Maui! Beautiful beaches, hot temps, never gets any snow.

God Bless our squirrel freedom fighters.  They know full well the tyranny perpetrated by the overlords of the North.

We have that rpoblem with turkey vultures.  After the Calif. Dept. of Forestry got done putting out the last brush fire, an electrician presented my with a vulture leg (that's all that was left of the poor thing).

That happened once to a poor fellow on a pole in front of my place.  Someone should put up squirrel baffles for electrical poles. :-/  Here is a pic of one of his grandkids on my squirrel feeder..
