They suspect her husband brought it home from work. The doc said they come North on Lumber trucks and when the bundle of lumber is dropped at the job site they seek cover in anything, including clothing.

She has a 3 inch diameter hole in her arm thats almost to the bone.

Anybody elseknow anyone who's been bitten by one of these guys?

One of my employees was bit on the back of his calf. Very ugly, to this day he has a depression about the size of a coaster that is atleast a quarter to a half in deep.

I got bit by a spider when I was pregnant with Sean. I don't know if it was a brown recluse but it was a severe bite.  I had to take some potent antibiotics and I have a dead spot on my leg due to the bite... While recuperating I couldnt walk... it was pretty bad... tell your friend, as I have said before here (Eyes of fire!!!) 80%of spiders bite... some severe some not.  Anything that bites me dies.  If they are harmless I will let them live, take them outside etc... I hope your friend is ok... be well...

how's collin???  love ree

A dear friend of mine in North Carolina was bitten by one on her cheek (that would be the face cheek).  She spent 3 weeks in the hospital on major antibiotics and is facing several pastic surgeries to repair her face.  It's one of the nastiest spiders known.

I, myself was bitten by what my doc called an "aggressive jumping garden spider."  Not a Brown Recluse, but I now have a very significant (to me) indentation scar on my chin.  My family says it gives my face "character."  I say .... "Death to all spiders!"

Sean,  there's a lot of work recently been done on this syndrome here in Oz.  As I recall, it's not the venom causes the problem but a soil-borne bacteria and the spider is just the vector.

I'm sure the research was carried out on the Atherton Tablelands in North Queensland but I simply can't remember now who did it.  Look into James Cook University - Cairns campus.  If it wasn't them directly, they'll know who it was.

Good luck to all concerned,

Brian Down Under.

Jeepers creepers........I am scared SHITLESS of spiders that appear to want to come my way or are in my way......we have huge wolf spiders here......some big enuff to part weeds. I've heard alot about the recluse and that they are VERY aggressive and will attack if you get near them inside or out. We have the golden rod spiders here in fall that get bigger by the day makeing webs that you easily walk thru and they are at FACE level. I play t-ball with them.........one wack and yer out of here Pam

Those bite pics were the gross'st thing I have seen in a long time. Gotta do alot of hand weeding around here and I always worry bout them. More so then ever now. Supposidly some spiders bite prey and it liquifies them inside out FAST so they can suck them dry so that prolly explains the deep wounds and how fast they disolve. And yeah.....I've heard that spiders often climb in your mouth when sleeping.......I've woke up with them dangling above my face on a single thread. EEKS !!!  :o

I HATE spiders.  Major case of arachnophobia here.  Just looking at a picture of a spider gives me the heebee geebees.   They are called fiddlebacks here.  Nasty fucking spider.  What's wierd is the bite itself doesn't usually hurt at the time.  A lot of people never realize they were bit until the bite site starts to react to the venom.

My son, John, was bit a few months ago on his hand.  The site got kind of ugly, but never went necrotic.  Our doc said that like with most everything else, some people are more susceptible to the venom than others.

I got bit by a brown recluse about 3 years ago.  Woke up with a tiny red spot on my chest that itched like crazy.  By that afternoon I had a hole the size of a pencil eraser and you could see the muscle in my chest.  Went immediately to the urgent care and was put on antibiotics the size of horse pills for 10 days.  The spot got bigger than a quarter and I have a scar on my chest from it.  It was VERY nasty!  I have a vendetta against spiders.  None come into my line of vision without being killed mercilessly.   ;;D

Like Gator, spiders are one thing that gets to me. If they are anywhere near decent size, my first reaction is to head for the hills. My second is to hit it with a shovel. That's very satisfying somehow. I'm still scared of the things though.

Yikes, what a thing this spider seems to be. Sorry to learn of so many attacks.

My wife was bit by a spider some time back.  We think it may have been a recluse, but luckily, she never got the necrosis from it.  From what I've read, the recluse venom can produce a general brakedown of the cells immediately surrounding the bite, and the necrosis develops if the blood vessels in the area of the bite become significantly damaged.  Also, a disruption of the circulatory system in the area of the bite will cause the area to be less resistant to infection.  Many times, it's the bacterial infection that causes the more severe and extensive necrosis.  Luckily for some, people can sometimes have a natural resistance to recluse venom, and have little to no reaction to the bite... But others can have a severe reaction, or even be allergic, causing a bite to be potentially lethal.

I'm from the west coast too and I thought I had seen Brown Recluses once or twice.  The one we have tons of in California is the Black Widow.  I've never been bit, but have found them everywhere.  Killed a ton of them too.  They are pretty scarry looking:

http://biology.clc.uc.edu/graphics/taxonomy/animals/arthropoda/arachnida/Black%20Widow/JSC%209911%20Black%20Widow%20belly%203.JPG

I hate hate them.  I understand the function spiders play in the environment, but I often wonder why God couldn't have created something that does the same thing, but is a little more appealing.  Then again, controlling the insect population by eating them probably wouldn't be appealing no matter what kind of creature it was.  Yuck.

We get those here.  Even had one in my house that we found dead after the bug guy came to spray.  About shit when I saw it.  I am scared to death that one would bit my kids.

I was bit by a black widow as a kid in AZ.  Still have the scar on my leg and it is numb.  I kill 99% of anything with more then 4 legs.  The only think that I will catch and take outside are crickets.

We have lot's of Black Widows and I have seen a couple Brown Recluse spiders in the wood piles that get delivered.  I was bit by a brown recluse, and it turned my flesh into goo where it bit me.  My veins turned black all the way up my leg, and the flesh 'hole' ended up big enough to put a small superball into.  I have always had a healthy fear of doctors, and on this particular occasion I didn't go see them and I lived.  I think the antibiotics are overkill, but I guess they are good for some people.  This summer alone, I've killed at least 20 Black Widows out in the back yard.  They are prolific if the conditions are right.  they like hot dark areas like the corners of the garage or any nooks and crannies outside.  Their web is super strong too, much stronger than any other spider I've seen.

My dad was bitten twice years go when I was a kid. The first bite left a hole in his leg about a half inch deep. The second time he was bit was on the webbing of his hand. Even though my dad detested doctors and hospitals, he wound up going there to avoid a hole in the hand. He had a minor scar from that one.

Where I am staying right now, they had a whole nest of brown recluse in and around the building. They have the glue strips down around the baseboards after having sprayed and caught many of them, and have sprayed for the pesty critters 3 times. I shake my bedclothes out before lying down, and shake out clothes and shoes before putting them on.

Another friend of mine, his son was bitten on the neck by a brown recluse, and it even made the news. He has to have skin grafts done, as it left a large purple scar.

Bugs suck!

In my barracks room one night, I saw a huge spider, sitting in the middle of my entryway. I smashed it with a slipper, and suddenly, thousands and thousands of tiny little spiders began scurrying in all directions. Apparently, it was one of those spiders that carries her young on her back. I looked like I was doing a Mexican Hat Dance... I think I smashed all of them. *shudder*

My friend's husband was just bitten by one of these a few days ago.  He was admitted yesterday to the hospital for mega IV antibiotics.  She's very scared and upset. :(

When I lived in Vermilion, OH - we had a 2 week period in May or June when the sandflies (type of midge) became a total infestation of the town.  These things would cover white houses and turn them black.  Yes, I've swallowed one or two...while walking to school.  If you happen to touch a bush, they swarm out of the bush and you just can't even get away fast enough.  We used to walk out from our house with our shirts up over our mouths even to get to the garage.  In the early 1900s, they had to use snowplows to get them off the streets - the buggers only live 24 hours and they'd pile on the streets a couple feet deep.

So the only thing that helps this problem -- are spiders.  Our houses were all close to 100 years old and had a plethora of spiders.  They'd build webs everywhere - windows, any place possible.  So then, quite a few sandflies would get caught in these webs.  That's THE only reason I tolerated spiders during that horrible couple of weeks.  We actually moved to Vermilion during the sandfly season - talk about a horrible time to move to a new town!!

I'm extremely afraid of bugs, and especially bees.  Right after my knee surgery, Dave was over and a giant moth flew in the garage door as he was leaving.  I'm telling you that I literally hopped about 6 feet across the room - on the crutches!  Kinda hurt...  Bees - I'm the same way with....They scare me to death.  My family gets annoyed because if a bee comes near me, I will literally run like bloody hell to get away from it!  Got bit by a wasp once as I went to get the mail, just 5 minutes after I got home from getting 15-20 Botox injections in my face and head to try to help the headaches.  I think the wasp bite hurt more... :(

Here in PA, I fear all mosquito bites....West Nile = bad.

Stay safe everyone!  For the most part, I'm too afraid to even kill bugs - I'm afraid to get that close to them.  I killed a spider last week that was on the bathmat..then I saw 2 more on my ceiling - didn't touch those.  Saw one climb across my bed the other day, and I screamed...also had a knee-jerk reaction which hurt like hell because of the surgery.  I blasted the sucker with a hair dryer...  LMAO

Sean - hope your friend's wife is okay!!  Also, I hope my friend's husband is okay!!  Scary stuff....

Carrie

A friend of mine was fishing in northern Minnesota and was bitten by a Brown Recluse. He was bitten while he was sleeping in a motel room, in the scrotum. At first, there was just a red dot, and then it grew very fast. By the time he went to the doctor gangrene had started. He lost a testicle and they had to do skin grafts to rebuild his scrotum. He came very close to death and was out of work for over six months. I knew these things were nasty, I didn't think it would be like that.

The fact that I hate bugs/insects too didn't help matters.  Good thing I was able to suck it up enough to kill it.....after a few failed attempts, we were safe from the giant blood sucking moth.

Same here Nani. I wake up with spider bites all the time, especially in the winter. I thought they did more good than harm. The doctor told my friend that if he had waited another day the gangrene would have probably killed him. He said the smell was so bad that one of the nurses had to leave the room.
