Title: Wanna kill the Google ads?
Post by ExplodingEyeBall on Jul 15th, 2005, 10:16am
Open up explorer and browse to c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc
                       or
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

and open up a file named hosts. It will have no extension. It's just named hosts.

Ad this line at the bottom. -
127.0.0.1 pagead2.googlesyndication.com

Save the file. Close your browser and then open it back up and come back here. The ads shouldn't show up now.

I believe that we need to be CLICKING on those adds, not ignoring them.  Doesn't the site get money each time one is clicked on?

I guess it does but I've had it with the content of some of the the ads (Sinus Busters? - Guaranteed?).

If we (DJ) had some kind of control over the content of the ads and it wasn't advertising crap, I wouldn't have a problem with them.

I was just suggesting a way to let people have more room on their screen for the messages and not have to see a bunch of ads.

I don't like 'em either, I just click on one a day and hit the back button right after the page loads. lol.

Maybe we can get them to include some great penis enlargement ads, or "hot chicks in your neighborhood" type ads. That'd be a lot better.

Thanks Pat, it worked ;;D...I donate to this site, so I don't feel the need to look at the ads.  I just want to know how to find this line or address on other sites to add to my hosts file?

Pat

If you right click on an ad and open up the properties, you will see a url listed. If you enter the first part of the URL up to and including the .com part, it will usually work. Always use either 0.0.0.0 or 127.0.0.1 as the address to point to.

The hosts file on my system is huge. It not only stops a lot of ads but also stops the ability to browse to certain websites that I know have a lot of popups, scripts, junk, etc. I use it on all of our staff systems at work to keep the instances of spyware down a little too.

If anyone wants a copy of my hosts file, P.M. me with an email address and I'll send it to you.

What bothers me the most about these ads (And I can't do anything about it.) is that people who may not be very educated about CH will come here looking for advice and see one of those ads and follow it. They will then associate us with the sh*t that they just saw in the ad.

I'd love to screw some money out of the snake oil sellers too but not at the cost of having their add on our web site and making us look like we support them.

I totally agree, but I would rather find a clever way to hurt them a lot worse than what a few clicks would do [smiley=bigguns.gif]

..... which could bring us back to the class action suit.

Okay, so then we ask DJ to design a little "disclaimer" in the bottom of the "page" that says: "Clusterheadaches.com does not endorse any products advertised in the google ads below for use in treating cluster headaches (especially products derived from the chemical capsaicin)"

That sounds like a perfectly reasonable thing to add, as long as there is no fine print to the contrary in the agreement with Google.

Pat, I wentr to host and it asked me what I wanted to use to open the file, I used word added the line and then saved it to host. Is that how it is supposed to work? Can I do this with any unwanted files or pages?

Learning something new everyday.

Tim

I don't work at Burger King. (I'd weigh 400 pounds if I did). I work with computers every day. I'm a computer specialist and I have to maintain about 450 of them.

I guess I should have mentioned that you need to open the hosts file with notepad or wordpad.

If there are any other web pages/ads/pictures or anything else that has a URL, you can enter it into the hosts file like this and get the same results.

A lot of the ads that have pics with them will show up as little red x's or just won't show at all.

P.M. me your email address and I'll email you the hosts file I use on Monday when I get back to work if you want it I'ts huge and has thousands of entries.

Wether you want to block the ads here or not, it is still pretty cool for keeping other stuff out of your system. I have a lot of URLs that are assosiated with web sites that will infect you with spyware in my hosts file.

My next geek trick will be a post on how to make entries in your registry that will make it impossible to run certain executable files. I need to be VERY careful to word it properly first before I post it though.

I use the Proxomitron to block all unwanted stuff, like third party ads, but also annoying blinking banners from a web site, including avatars from this MB that are disturbingly flashing or with a 1 MByte size take too long to load, LOL.

Proxomitron can also modify annoying Java-scripts, like

Kill JavaScript Banners
Embedded MIDI Silencer
Force pop-ups to have browser controls
Anti-Auto-Refresher
GeoCities branding killer
Stop browser window resizing
Stop status bar scrollers
Allow right mouse click
Kill anti-cache meta tags

an many more. (If you are a geek you can write your own filters too.)

The program is used like a proxy server, and therefore can be disabled at a mouse click if need, unlike the hosts file. For more information use Google ;).
