Title: Man, do I feel............what?
Post by DonnaHar on Jul 12th, 2005, 6:53pm
Like a hero? no.  An old relic? maybe.  Lucky? yah!  My daughter sent me this and I love it.

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the

1940's, 50's, 60's and 70's !!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paints, with slats wide enough to put our heads through.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle, and NO ONE actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soda pop with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat
rooms.......... we went outside and found friends!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth, and there were NO LAWSUITS from these accidents.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house, knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of!

Our generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned

HOW TO  DEAL WITH IT!

And YOU are one of them! CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good. And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?!

Thanks for that list by the way. Throw in about a dozen bee stings and it pretty much describes my childhood.

I don't come over and play much on this side of the board, but this was actually cool! I remember all that!

And oh yeah, my mom didn't carry around "Hand Sanitizing Gel" either. LOL

Fun times.

Oh, Linda here is a link for you and anyone else that is curious:

That's a GREAT list. As has been said, that's my childhood, and it was awesome. Locally here in Charlotte, NC, there's actually an ordinance in which a parent can be ticketed if your child is not wearing a helmet when riding his/her bicycle. [smiley=mad.gif] WTF is that about? It saddens me so much to see the "controls" that kids have to live under now, due to FEAR. Fear is a horrible factor in our society and we have let it take over, draining the LIFE out of our lives.

Certain segments of society have made it their mission to disprove the theory that "shit happens". Acceptance of this fact is EVERY human's first step toward being able to live a sane existence with less anxiety and fear.

So, today, drive with the windows down in the car and a classic rock radio station loud, even if it's hot outside.

Ozzy, you are way too young to remember any of this.  :)

But thanks for the link...I am amazed at what I put my non-born children through w/o even knowing it.   :o

There was a lady in my office yesterday and we got to reminissing (as older people do) about the "way things were when we were kids" and a lot of those things got brought up.

If you done wrong at a neighbors you got your butt busted and when you got home you got it busted again - everyone got in on the act. I think I was grown before I knew that butts weren't a bright shiney red!

But things were a lot better in so many ways back then. Ya didn't have to wait six months to go to the doc - he came by the house if you were sick. Maybe I'm just gettin' old, but I wish my grandson could grow up like I did (without all the butt bustin's of course). We learned a lot of "common sense" back in those days and didn't have to have a computer to count to ten.

Oh well, back to the real world. Thanks for sharing Donna.....

So here I am 10 years ago, painting my garage door and a 9 or 10 year old falls off his bike, tears his pants, skins his knee and did some crying. I said: "You okay?" He said: "yeah."

Not long after that, his mom, who I never met, drove up and told me how callous I was by not dragging him in the house, calling her, (probably embarrassing the kid) treating this like he was about to lose a leg, and start something that would take all day.  I was accused of everything but child abuse. His father called and told me she was nuts.  http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/cute phone.gif

The other day, in some conversation, a woman said that she would no more do something than she would leave her child alone for three hours. Surely she jests.... If I came home in three hours, I'd be asked what happened, given a Coke and sent on my merry way back to the 30 foot high tree house that my parents never saw.

Thems wuz the daze.

Charlie
