Title: Re: Its only July and now there is Emily Post by LadyElaine on Jul 12th, 2005, 6:55am My daughter just moved to Fl and I worry about her all the time. I feel for you all. We have houses underwater here because of all the rain from last week. Cob county here was flooded bad. We get the flooding here and the winds after each one. Its bad enough here can't say I want to move there. I will keep my fingers cross maybe this one will fizzel out in the water. |

Title: Re: Its only July and now there is Emily Post by thomas on Jul 12th, 2005, 9:12am I still don't understand the mentality of people who want to live in Fla or Ca. I just don't get it. Sorry if it seems cold, but I don't get it, really I don't. |

Title: Re: Its only July and now there is Emily Post by burnt-toast on Jul 12th, 2005, 9:47am Lets pray that she blows herself out over the ocean and never becomes a hurricane. Times like these make me glad that I'm living in PA - However Ivan stalled over us last year and we lost our bridge - for six weeks we had to park on our narrow country road and walk a foot bridge we built over our stream. No insurance covers bridges, China's steel glut had driven up the cost of steel - cost each of the three families that depend on the bridge a small fortune. Our neighbors had major flood damage from the massive flood - but at least insurance covered most of their losses. When these things come in - they affect a lot more than coastal regions. Tom |

Well if it was for not growing up here and owning property and things down here, I would have moved last year... But its also one of the most beatiful places to live... :) :( Its a Love / Hate Relationship... I know those storms go further than the Coastline, we had friends come stay with us last year, when Ivan hit N.C., they were out of their home for 3 months, I felt bad having them come down here, but atleast they had a Roof over their head.. Every place I know of has a downfall, this is just our downfall time of year here in Florida.... PFDAN's to ALL !!! |

Title: Re: Its only July and now there is Emily Post by Charlie on Jul 12th, 2005, 12:57pm I couldn't live there either, Thomas but it's the oppressive heat. 80/26 in February isn't my idea of comfort. http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/weather man.gif Charlie |

Title: Re: Its only July and now there is Emily Post by Lizzie2 on Jul 12th, 2005, 3:08pm Did ya see my post in the thread about Dennis? My grandparents live on Siesta Key (since 1970), my cousins live in Sarasota, my aunt and uncle live in Tampa, and my great-aunt lives in Tampa. Siesta Key would be my place of choice - and I could work in the neonatal unit at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, which is a very big unit down there! Anyways, it's a bit of a ways off - I was just down there from June 12-18. I'll post pics at some point - maybe I can motivate myself to do it today! Hugz, Carrie :) |

Title: Re: Its only July and now there is Emily Post by DonnaHar on Jul 12th, 2005, 5:42pm Great pictures, Carrie. I can't wait until you come back down here. jc, you and I must get together for lunch, and anyone else who wants to come. We can meet at Carraba's on the corner of US 41 and Siesta Key Drive. I moved from Ohio in 1984 when the temperature was 17 below zero and the snow was up to my crotch. I saw tornados that wiped out six city blocks and killed many people. That's why I moved to Florida.....that and the fact that my mom and young widowed sister were already down here. I feel much safer here than there because I can always run from a hurricane, but not a tornado. And it's a beautiful place to be 99% of the time. I do love it here and wouldn't trade it for anywhere else in the U.S., except for Hawaii, and they've got problems too. Things I don't miss.....snow tires, ice storms, cars that slide down little hills sideways, boots and chapped lips. |

Red Tide = brevetoxins that they presume are from algal blooms. At least, I think that's correct! Check out the Mote Marine website for good info on it. :) Those sand dollars are lovely! I have one upstairs on my dresser that we found already dead. Puffer fish make me smile and think of "Finding Nemo." Which also explains why there are pics of pelicans and seagulls. ;) I want to go baaaaaaaaack!!! :) DonnaH - we MUST have lunch next time!!! :) |

Title: Re: Its only July and now there is Emily Post by cootie on Jul 12th, 2005, 6:35pm Did you live near Xenia Ohio donna ? Jus wonderin cuz I have relatives down there and they had the aweful tornado outbreak years ago that did that type of damage.....it was devastateing like an atomic bomb was dropped. Out here winter is your worst enemy......heating oil and propane company's always DOUBLE there price when they forsee several weeks of zero of close temps......it never fails. And on top of it they give you 30 days to pay off your balance or they come out and take your regulator......they don't care !!!! We've kept up with it but know people that got behind and had no heat all winter and switched to a woodburner and were lucky they had that. My insurence co says NO to them unless inpsected and the LATEST materials are used for chimney and wall insert. You use one without them knowing it you are NOT COVER'D. Will insurence co's continue to pay for damages to houses in hurricane hit areas over and over or do they set a limit or drop you or up your premiums ? Were gettin spotty storms from Dennis here but nothing much yet......humidity is unreal tho......most hear are in a drought and need the rain yet we have had alot in our "tiny immediate area in this valley. Houses up the hill have burnt yards and all around us.....we need to mow again !!! Strange dayz Pam |

I don't understand why anyone would live in a flood zone period. I would never buy any property in a 500 year flood zone. I will probably rent there but would always have off site backups of all important data. Of course I would also never have trees near my house or driveways so that the odd wind storm doesn't knock them down on either. I have decided that if I ever build a house it will be underground, seems the coolest and safest waty to live. Opus/Paul |
