Yea, know what you mean there, I am in Bradenton, about 20 miles from the coast.

We did not get any damage last year, but we are just getting people homes all fixed and here comes another one, I guess its the price we pay..  :-/

I'm in Englewood two miles from the ocean, just between Pine Island and Bradenton.  My kids live in North Port which was about three miles out of the nearly total destruction of Port Charlotte last year, so they were in the middle of the eye, saw trees snapping and roofs flying, but were not a target...thank God.

The hospital in Port Charlotte is evacuating their hospital right now as they suffered severe damage last year.  My daughter is a nurse in Naples, can see the ocean, and will be in lock-down there for the weekend.

I only lost a palm tree and about 100 ft. privacy fence.  I know we'll be evacuated to a shelter this time, with the dog and cat.   Oh, how I hate this.

Thanks for the well wishes.  I think we're going to need them.

He sent me a PM yesterday and from what I understand he will be in Panama city, thats kinda north of us. We are in South and Central Florida...

But yea, I hope they are atleast watching the news..
As everyone here knows after last year, they go where they want, not where the Weather Man puts them..  :-/

I'm glad you have a place to go. Englewood is one of the few places in Florida that I got to know a bit.

They've been taking a beating for the last few years.  :-/

Just being sarcastic....  :-/

But a few yrs back they said (I think it was) George was gonna hit Texas and it ended up going right up thr coast of Florida, after it entered the Gulf of Mexico. Nobody was prepared, cause the weather people had us out of range.

Was the worst, we were with out Power in Manatee back then for almost a week...  :-/ :-[

We never believe the weather people anymore, until the storm is gone...

The old saying in Florida is "If you don't like the weather, just wait it will change in 5 minutes" :)

Tha canals are being pumped down, neighboring parishes are suggesting voluntary evacuation and the I-10 and Pontchartrain Causeway had alot more traffic than normal on my way home.

Gas lines are growing, people making big groceries and stocking up on supplies. Business at Home Depot is brisk.

Radio stations inturupted normal programming, contra-flow evacuation plans on I-10, I-12, I-55 and I-59 ready to be activated 50 hours before expected landfall and hotels north are booked-up.

More to follow.

Well we will know more once it clears CUBA, those moutains there turn everything around.

My friend at the Manatee Red Cross (Central Coast of Florida) said they are calling in all people tonight, just in case it turns toward us. Even the outer bands are 250 miles wide, so it will affect alot of people.

Just all BEWARE this is most likely going to be a Cat 5 storm where ever it goes... Watch this one close...

Good Luck & PFDAN's to ALL !!!

The latest map I see shows it going in at the panhandle from St. Joe Florida to the panhandle of Mississippi.

I've got a lot of people in the P.C. Beach area (right in the middle of the path I see) and they're watching close already.

I hope it wears itself out before it hits.

We're getting feeder bands now.  It's been raining for a couple of hours on and off, with some blinding periods.  We are under tornado watch until tomorrow.  That scares me more than the hurricane.

"They" say the surge will be 5 to 8 feet high.  That may not sound like much, but it means a lot when you are at almost sea level.

I sure hope we aren't asked to evacuate.  My poor little Beagle is "evacuation shy"  We pulled everything off the lanai and stuffed it inside my living room last year, put everything we could up off the floor,  and then took everything out of the yard (bird bath, potted plants, etc.) and put that stuff on the lanai.  Naturally this was done under panic mode and scared the daylights out of her.  That's why she's storm shy now, I think.  We did this 3 times during the 4 hurricanes last year.

I've lived here for 21 years and last year was the first time we had to flee.....and this year looks like it might be just as bad.

No, there's no such thing happening as "the greenhouse effect".  Let's loosen up those restrictions on air pollution a little more.

OK here is an update from the Bradenton/Sarasota area.

Its now about 9:30am, the weather is holding prtty good here, we had some strong winds and rain, but nothing too bad so far, we are under a Tornado, Tropical Strom & Flood Watch till 6pm.

Hurricane Dennis is still south of us and will build strength today and the Temps go up, looks like we are going to get all the Feeder Bands.

As the day goes on things will get worse. We have had 2 tonados here in Manatee county, but not exactly sure where, no one has been reported hurt. (Thank God).

I just ask that everyone keep all the People in the path of this Hurricane in their Thoughts and Prayers. If we have any major events here I will try to post them, just to keep everyone up to date.

Its about 1pm here, just thought that I would check in real quick. We are getting bad weather moving through right now and will probally continue for the rest of the afternoon/night. As the bands move through our area.

I do not know how long our power will be on, so I hope to post when I can, we are getting reports of power out all over Manatee/Sarasota counties. Not too much Wind or Flooding yet, that will probally come tonight..

Okay, Florida folks, we will be thinking about you and praying for you!!!  We can see the bands just below us in the satellite (I am in central Georgia),probably Tstorms tonight.

They have MAJOR evacuation facilities just south of us in Warner Robbins.

We have spent the past 3 days digging out drainage pipes that were clogged with roots, Home Depot charged us for the rooter thing, and then we couldn't get it in the car, said they still had to charge us.  Don't think so...Just redirected some of the water spouts, maybe that will help...

Anyone coming from Florida, we have a sleeper sofa ;;D we need all the help we can get bailing out the basement.  Hubby's been out of work a few weeks, he can repay the favor by helping you put your roof back on.  Mmm, now that's a thought, we need the back half of the roof done, if it's blown off, will the insurance pay for it to get replaced?

Ah, all sorts of fun things to do.  Just happy to know I have 3 more weeks of Kudzu in the cabinet, and if all else fails, I can go down to the creek with the post hole diggers and find some roots.

May get offline when the storms hit...
PF HIGH AND DRY days and nights to all!

Post by DonnaHar on Jul 10th, 2005, 8:06am
We Florida west coast folks were more than just lucky yesterday.  I've seen worse thunderstorms this year.

I spent the day yesterday at work, just about where the  "r" is, in jcmquix's last map, in the word "here", on a little barrier island (looks like a string running  along side the coast line).  The island is about 800 feet wide and a two lane road runs down its' center.  It is one of the very first places to be manditorily evacuated when we suspect a a sustained wind of 35 mph.  It wasn't closed and we didn't have that much wind.

So, you see how luck we were this time.   We just never know until the last minute if the thing is going to turn or not, and it usually doesn't.

I saw the results of a horrific tornado in Cleveland, Ohio when I was 16,  on a transit bus going to work down town.  Now THAT scared me, but if I were in Pensacola, Florida right now...well, I wouldn't be in Pensacola right now as the hurricane is a catagory 4 (on a scale of 1 to 5) and rumbling towards them with a force of 145 mph.  That's what hit Port Charlotte last year, and they're still only a small percentage repaired.

Prayers for Pensacola, or where ever this moster storm eventually hits.

Everyone whose in the line of fire, keep us updated, if/when you can.

News coverage of this is a joke, all the personal interest stories, instead of what is REALLY going on, and now it's Sunday, so even less coverage..I guess I can go on the internet, until the cable goes out...

Title: Re: Hurricane Dennis
Post by stevegeebe on Jul 10th, 2005, 9:30am
I don't know if we qualify for "in the line of fire" but I'll keep y'all updated.

Some local weather folks are saying that later on in the day may be similar to what we experienced with Cindy last week.  Just finished the clean-up from that.

Drove out to the lakefront early this morning and noticed alot of folks sitting on their porches, drinking coffee and reading the paper.  The lake was as calm as well.  What a difference a hundred miles makes.

The breeze is picking up, an occasional pine cone hits the tin roof and the dogs seem nervous.

Praying for those just east of here.

Yep - saw that this morning on the news..  they said they were going to name it Emily...

All I can say is - Illinois has got one thing going for it.  No hurricanes.. no forest fires, no earthquakes...  no tsunamis
all we really have to deal with is tornadoes... and freezing ass winters.

I wouldn't live down there for NUTHIN!

Hope everyone's OK.  Glad to hear Dennis didn't hit as hard as they were thinking it would.   Seems like ya'll got a long summer ahead.

Sending NO MORE HURRICANE Vibes to you....... all summer long!

You forgot the cell phone talking, shaving, breakfeast eating, makeup applying, paper reading, luxury car driving, ruder than me morons who seem to be in abundance on the Dan Ryan.

I'd take Florida and it's weather any day to escape from the region. And yes... I know what I'm asking for. I used to live in the pan handle of Florida.

Rats!

Every drop of water the falls within the levee district that surrounds the Greater New Orleans area has to be pumped out.  We have lost 40 square miles of marsh per year over the past few decades.  The Gulf coast that use to afford some protection is gone.

When I was a kid, Louisiana use to be the only state that was, because of the delta, adding land.  Now we are washing away what is about 40% of the wetlands of the US.  When I go fishing in the Gulf, I see chunks of land out a ways in the water that use to be the coast and when I look back toward shore I can't believe the magnitude of loss.

This loss of land in combination with the fact that we are below sea level portends an event that scares the crap out of me whenever I see these things in the Gulf.

I've got bad feelings about this season.  The law of averages are shaking out the other locations and it is only a matter of time before the shit hits the fan. God help us when it happens.
