;;DIf you like Sci-Fi as much as I do, and you think Spielberg makes good movies, you may want to rethink your views about seeing War of the Worlds. I'm happy to report that I saw it on the "jumbo" screen this weekend, and it was worth every penny. But be warned, its REALLY gory. The special effects were truly awesome, and I had the cr*p scared out of me, even though I already knew the story. It wasn’t Cruise’s best preformance ever, but it was good (he’s not all that convincing as a blue collar kind of guy). Spielberg can no longer be accused of depicting aliens as the cute cuddly ET types. And some of the more subtle elements were almost elegant--like in the crowd scenes, people seemed to really have individual responses to the horror they were witnessing. It wasn’t just everyone running in the same direction or having a generic response. Dakota Fanning just keeps getting better and better. She actually stole the show. It could have used a little more comic relief though.I give it four and a half stars.

I'm not into scifi stuff... But I have seen Cruise in other roles (Mission Impossibles) and Dakota Fanning, too. She's one amazing actress.

The last movie I saw was A Lot Like Love. And before that... don't recall. It's been a while.

I have been toying with going to see this movie, because I really can't stand Tom Cruise... now with your review I may just have to go see it... Thanks Pattik!

I saw Mr & Mrs Smith. I actually believe that Angelina Jolie did not have a seen where she did not look absolutely HOT!!! (I'm sure the gals would say the same thing about Mr. Pitt). It's a really funny movie with lots of shoot'em up. No deep meaning here on this one, but what a lot of fun. Eye candy there for everyone.

Duel is still Spielberg's best movie with Dennis Weaver.

Sandie-- YES!!! check it out... I really liked it. It was so funny, full of action.... nice sex scenes [smiley=bloos.gif] It was worth it! I was debating about it too, but I was pretty entertained throughout the whole movie. Two thumbs up! ;;D

I haven't seen this yet but then I see everything on HBO, even horrible shit like Blair Witch Project which was the biggest con and waste of time...barring Battlefield Earth, in my lifetime. http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/tv.gif

I like Speilberg's sorta SF films. They don't require a lot of reflection but are just what I need. Something fun. "Duel" may just be his best Vig, and it's nice to see it on cable sans commercials. Was Duel a Steven King story? I can't remember.

WOTW isn't a bit hit with smartass critics is all I know. Must be better than I thought.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea remains my favorite SF movie. Probably because I saw it in the theater when I was 8 years old. I like so many others but this has them beat unless Dr. Strangelove is counted as SF.

I caught "Duel" on cable, late one night. The suspense kept me on the edge of my seat! Fantastic movie. I don't think it was a Stephen King story, though. (King did one called, "Trucks" where the trucks become sentient and hold a bunch of people hostage in a diner)

I think he wrote stuff for Outer Limits, Twilight Zone and some mysteries.

I don't recall Emilio Estevez being in it, but it's been awhile since I've seen it. "Freejack" "Repo Man" and "Wisdom" were probably my favorite Emilio Estevez movies.

I didn't like the movie (War of the Worlds that is). It was ok. And I thought Tom Cruise was pretty convincing myself. However, the movie had no real direction, as in, goal toward which it was moving. And the ending was way too Hollywood in my opinion.

I didn't like it.

And, I actaully think Cruise's best performance is in Magnolia, in which he is fantastic. That is if you don' t count his performance in real life as a human being, as, it is widely known that he is a muppett.

Saw it with my friends over the weekend, then with the family last evening.

Liked it. Was not great, but decent sci-fi gets a +4 handicap on my scale.

Only thing it lacked was that little girl (Dakota) being dismembered. Her incessent screaming got old about 10 minutes into the flick.

The ground military effects were brutally weak. They rented 2 tanks, 1 M109, a half-dozen hum-v's, and a few duece & a halfs. I could do better with plastic army guys and a tin of lighter fluid.

Pattik - I thought there was a fair amount of humour in the film! ;)

Just saw WOTW tonight with Dave. I did like it - despite my feelings about Tom Cruise as a person!

I know quite a few people have stated that the effects really bothered their heads, and yes I had to look away during all of the bright flashes of light, but I also had a different take on it...

Did anyone watch this movie and think...."Oh man - this is a good depiction of what the beast does inside my skull!" ?? For some reason, it wore a pretty decent resemblance for me!

Yeah...Emilio was in it ...(is he getting to look more like his old man as he gets older, or what)...he played Bill Robinson, the hero of the movie.

I must've seen Maximum Overdrive 20 times...( hey, I was in my early twenties at the time). I usually cheered for the Green Goblin truck . I love the part where all the trucks are lined up to get gas...perfect "tables are turned" depiction...the kid getting run over by the lawn mower was a little disturbing and could've been cut out of the movie...but overall 2 thumbs up with a twirl.

PS ...and the Night Stalker with Kolchack...man I loved that show when I was a kid. It was on after the Brady Bunch on Friday nights. What a week-end starter. [smiley=headbanger.gif]

Carrie, I was thinking exactly the same thing during the movie. ;;D Those tripod machines would be a great metaphor for the beast. Maybe that's why those scenes really kept me on edge. [smiley=eek.gif]

I'm watching a Turner Classic Movies 1 hour special on all good and campy 1950s science fiction films....The Day the Earth Stood Still to Ed Wood. They interviewed several directors and producers, Spielberg among them.

Right in the middle of the 1950s WOTW movie clip with Gene Barry, up comes clips of Spielberg's new WOTW.
