Title: Live 8 Concerts
Post by sandie99 on Jul 2nd, 2005, 10:24am
The Live 8 Concerts have begun! I'm watching the one in London via TV and the one in Berlin online.

Are you going to watch?

They just had London, and have cut to Berlin.

Dido is hot.

Audioslave is on now.  Did Soundgarden become Audioslave?  Have I been living under a rock?

I believe Audioslave members are ex-members of Soundgarden and Rage Against The Machine.

They just started the broadcast from Barrie, ON.

I'd really like to see The Cure in Paris.

AOL????

Since it is a closed format and Microsoft doesn't seem to have a client for any OS besides it's own, and my Mplayer doesn't seem to be working correctly I guess it is a no ;;D

If anyone has a URL to the stream ( I could not seem to find it in the source code) then it would be easy to play in Xine. Other wise I will wait until they decide to release it in Ogg Vorbis or even a Real player fomat so I have an officially released client;;D

Or is this good enough that I should go out and buy a computer with winXP preinstalled. Anyway, having a bad day, going to borrow a welder to attach a ball joint >:(

On one.org ???  I made a post about that quite some time ago, but I don't think anyone ever replied - I would have to go back and find it though because I really don't remember!!

I had seen the commercial on tv - probably while I was in the hospital for one thing or another, but I forget when!  I then emailed the link to several of my family/friends.

I know I have said there's no way I'm going to Philly today, and that still is the truth, but I'm watching and still thrilled about it!  Just didn't want to be in the masses down there - Philly is bad enough on a regular day.  haha ;)  At the Y on broad street (just down slightly from the Kimmel Ctr, Academy, etc) once a month they have gay bingo.  I went back in January, and it was a blast!  I forget if it benefitted Philly Fight or another AIDS org.

Tomorrow night is Elton John for Philadelphia and worldwide AIDS benefit - "Philadelphia Freedom"  :)

I'm so glad they're getting the stats out, especially for the AIDS community in Philadelphia - it grows by a devastating amount by the day.

So yeah - I'm watching it!!  Wish that I could handle the crowd down there, but that's not gonna happen!

Do you have cable?  It's on MTV and VH1 all day today.  I'm sure they'll put at least parts of it on other channels.  Otherwise, you may also be able to listen to broadcasts on the radio.  I'm sure there are other streams on the web, but I have it on tv. :)

its www.makepovertyhistory.org here. I've signed, David has signed. Two white-faced emotional kids of mine have signed too. I thought long and hard about letting them watch knowing how disturbing some of the images would be but they ARE bloody lucky and it doesn't hurt to remind them of that.
Its also teaching them to do the right thing I hope!

edited because in Nottingham at least ... objects in the mirror tend to be stupider than they look.... ::)

Title: Re: Live 8 Concerts
Post by Lizzie2 on Jul 2nd, 2005, 4:00pm
Definitely, Helen!!

Honestly, the link you posted is probably the one official to Live 8.  I go through the One Foundation because it is a unification of several different org's with the same purpose.

The images are disturbing -  but it's what the world needs to see.  I'm tired of hearing all the garbage about how Africa should be left alone to blow themselves up.   :-/

Speaking of just the AIDS aspect of the cause, AIDS is at close to 50% in Africa - it didn't use to be that way - just like it didn't always have such high prevalence on other continents.  So....looking at Africa's trend, we can't think that this can't happen in other places.  The statistic that 9 out of 10 people who need antiretroviral medication world wide do not receive it is one heavy hitting, potent statistic.

Does seem so, I always have those strange problems that no one else ever has so I always have to come up with a solution myself.

On the other hand, as I am burning the whole 2005 Dr Who season to a DVD I remembered that tommorow I will probably be able to start downloading the performances of my favorate artists using Bittorent.

I think I forgot to take my anti-cynic pills lately because I think Live8 is a bunch of horseshit.  Straight out of the gate the Pink Floyd guy is ranting about how the US doesn't give enough money but failed to mention any other country on the planet.

He should chat w/his accountant about how much money the US gave in album purchases back in the day.

Additionally, if these 'artists' were doing it selflessly then perhaps they'd all be writing a check to the promoters of oh, say 100K each? It'd be covered in sales by the exposure they'll get for playing but even if it weren't it's still the right thing to do if they truly care about world poverty or whatever the righteous topic du jour is.

My .02 laced.

BTW, talk about $$$...thank you MTV. Floyd's final song
and half way through we get to cut to MTV idiots telling us how great they sound (in the fking background) and what a moment in time it is. Yeah right....so cut to a
GD &&^%$**&^*((ing commercial. <sigh> Wonder what they got paid for THAT commercial spot.  >:(

LOL Bob!

I was watching the local channels tonight, and I think I got to see the entire PF set!  (I can't remember now - been having the mig from hell today)  I, too, did not like when MTV cut out on the performers with their commentary!

My brother said no worries because there will be a DVD out in like 2 weeks.  haha

Hmmmm...if someone downloaded my piano music off the internet, I wonder if it would bother me....  Ohhhh wait!!  I had my piano music put on the internet for free downloading purposes!!  hahaha  Not even close to  the same, as I wasn't making money for it anyways, and I'm not internationally famous!!  I always feel bad especially when I see some of the classical musicians work being downloaded for free because they don't rake in near as much money as pop performers as it is!  However, for us unknowns out there, it's a half decent form of free publicity!    [smiley=laugh.gif]

MTV wasn't the only one. The Finnish channel 2 (public broadcast at that) did the very same thing, too. That's why those poor things who coundn't watch the show online missed Sarah McLachan & Josh Groban duet and Andre Boticelli. And the TV didn't show Neil Young, Shakira or Madonna at all! >:( Thank goodness for internet... :)

Boticelli?  Isn't that a kind of pasta?   [smiley=laugh.gif]  Was it Andrea Bocelli?  (just picking on ya about the name!)  I actually didn't even see him or the SM/JG duet on any of the channels!!  That's too bad...  I bet it was really good!  We did see Madonna here - I'm not sure how much they showed on MTV live, but I know they went back to it at some point -- I saw "Like a Prayer"  I'm wondering if either more will be shown if they release a DVD of some sort or if any of the tv channels will show more of the concert in specials on it, or something of that nature!

Carrie,

I as Lisa from the OUCH UK board would certrainly be buying the DVD set. (9 Concerts all lasting between 5 - 8 hours long) Plus one Concert to take place in Edinburgh Next week.

I watched the UK coverage from 2pm - 7:30 and was really annoyed at the editors cutting to interview feeds during the Bigger act's. The BBC are certainly showing the concerts on BBC3 one at a time the American one is on at the moment.

As you'll realise the Live 8 and make poverty History campaign has alot of milage in Britain. (Carrie you'vve read the posts some heated on the UK boards)

Thanks for your support

Have a good one

Scott.
