Title: How are you celebrating 4th of July?
Post by sandie99 on Jul 1st, 2005, 1:40pm
As a patriotic woman myself I'm very interested to hear how you guys in America are going to celebrate your day.

So, what are you doing this weekend and on the day itself???
What are your traditions? Special dishes? Tell me everything! :)

Im not doing a darn thing! We didn't get invited anywhere and we just hosted our own patriotic bbq for Memorial day.  However.. many people will go see fireworks, I'm not a big fan of loud noises but I have a feeling I will end up going anyhow.  Most people have parties, with chicken, hamburgers, hotdogs, macaroni salad ect, in NY we have salt potatoes and beans too. Sometimes there are parades.
People seem to live red white and blue jello and whipped cream for dessert.. Least I do. Yummy.. now Im hungry

I'm going camping with my wife and my daughter. We're leaving as soon as I get home from work today.

I'm sure that the camp ground will have some patriotic activities for the kids so, we'll be in on what ever that is.

I'll watch the NASCAR race on my 4" tv at the campground on Saturday too.

We'll do some hiking and swimming. We're also planning on visiting a battle field that is nearby and seeing the actual battle site of the Battle For Tippicanoe and the museum that is there.

I'll be cooking most of our meals over the open fire at the camp ground. (steaks, ribs, etc...) I'm sure that my wife has something cool planned too. She always comes up with something fitting for every holiday.

We'll come back on the 4th so we can attend my buddies yearly BBQ and then every body at the party walks to the park to watch the fireworks.

In a nutshell..... I relax as much as possible and let my family just enjoy the down time. Most of all... All of the plans we have made are not definate. If we decide to do something else, it's cool.

This weekend I am doing something that just a few  short months ago I thought would never happen.

We are celebrating my father's birthday.  Some time before Christmas last year, the docs told us we would be lucky to have him with us come Christmas-time.  He made it.  Then just a couple of months ago he was in ICU and not expected to make it out alive.  He made it.  Then the docs told us he would be lucky to make it to his next birthday.  Well, it is tomorrow.  He made it.  (Guess you all know now where I get my "fighting spirit".)

He is still in very poor health and the neuros have yet to figure out what is causing his BPM (breaths per minute) to go up to 70 or greater with no warning or cause and will attend his own party immediately after a hemodialysis session, but by God, he made it.

Tomorrow the kids and I will load up in the car and drive out to be with my Dad and the rest of the family.

There will be food (boiled crawdads, new potatoes, corn on the cob and banana pudding for dessert), fun  (dominos, horseshoes, fishing and swimming), fireworks at dusk and a joyous celebration.

A celebration of life.

Pacing, sitting rocking back and forth, pounding my head and screaming in pain.  Other than that?  Probably have a cookout at home, sit out in the yard and watch the boys shoot some fireworks and then watch the displays of people all around us as I ponder the death of personal liberty in this country.

Yee fukin haw.

I have to work all weekend, but I'm off on Monday, the 4th.  So, my boyfriend and I are going to go to his parent's house for a cookout and we may head across the river to the St. Louis VP Fair and see the fireworks, etc.

I hope everyone has a safe and fun 4th of July weekend!

Do some gardening, play with my dog, NOT go to the fireworks (I have neighbors who put on their own great show every year), and help my mother with her packing (she's moving to a new place in a week).  Also, maybe grill some good stuff for the family.

Watching my cousin's really boring dog, thawing out something and watching the latest Six Feet Under and reruns of Sex and The City. It's always a whirlwind.

This year, no town fireworks. No money in this economy for such things.

Now if you live along our lake, you get flares from the Chautauqua Lake Association and light them all along the lakefront at 10 before the parks begin the displays. There are so many cottages that's it's quite a sight from the air. I miss that stuff.

I'm going down to Yaquina Bay to the gear shed and see how two of my last three friends still alive are doing.
We will take about 6 quarts of Whiskey and drift on the tide in the bay watching the fireworks and toast all the friends that did'nt make it back in.
Think I'll do a little boat shopping while I'm at it. A nice Albacoe boat. Around 75 feet should do. If it has a stern house, perhaps I'll do a little crabbing this Winter.
Oh well, I'll toast lost friends anyway.

Nevertheless,  my time now is just after sunset on the 4th, I've knocked off work and opened a beer and I'm drinking to the bloody good health of all my American mates at CH.com.

Have a good one!

Yesterday was my husbands 30th birthday.  I did the best I could with decorating, having the house cleaned, food out and people over to help him celebrate.  I wish I would have been able to do a surprise party, but it would have been too much.  Anyway, he worked 12 hour shifts both Sat. & Sun. and now is on 1st shift this week, including today (know what you mean Bob about X3).  Anyway, it'll be the 1st time in 5 years that he'll be able to take his family (us) to see the fireworks tonight.  That means more to me than anything else this holiday :'(.

Have a safe and Happy 4th everyone!  I feel very fortunate to live in America.  I wouldn't have wanted to be born anywhere else.  I lucked out twice ya know... was born in Wisconsin! ;;D ;;D

Spent the day at the beach. Got there early and came back at 3 pm. Now in our backyard in the pool. Wife is napping, and I'm here with you all since I can't nap.... When it gets dark, we're going back to the beach to watch the fireworks.
Lots of food, no beer. Smoked a cigar and hoped for no attack. Didn't get one! Good day so far!

Matt!  That's so neat!!

One of my direct ancestors signed the Declaration of Independence!!  (Josiah Barlett, NH)  Maybe they knew each other!!   ;;D

I saw in that first link that Matlack was reinterred at Matson's Ford.  I drive on Matsonsford Rd quite often to get home from work - it's the back route. :)  There are many "Ford" names in that area that draw back to the revolution. :)
