Two rails...anyone care to guess how long it took to polish them both?....each one took the same amount of time ;;D

Edit to add: Notice that I have polishing rags between them....thats so they dont scratch each other...anyone even puts a finger print on my finish will die...;;D

Two hours each.  What did you seal them in?

I've got a bald spot coming in that I think you could work wonders on!

I'd say 14 hours for each..

LOL...one high, one low ;;D

It was 8 hours a piece.

I dont coat the things cause of all the dust I creat in the shop, but if I were the customer I would clear lacquer them. If he dont and dont clean them once a week they will be brown as all hell in six months from tarnish. (If outside)

They're really beautiful, and it's interesting to see the progression of the work.  Do you finish it all with a coating to slow down the oxidation?  I love brass, but it always seems to need frequent polishing. ;;D

Jonny
Thats really good work, ther's a lot of pride put into work like that.

I collect brass & copper gear and to preserve the surface after polishing I use a clear lacquer that lasts if you dont put it in a constant wear situation.

Brass I dont have a problem with polishing, but copper items tarnish very quickly and if you dont get the clear lacquer on post haste you are left with early stage tarnish under the clear.
Have you got any tips on stopping or postponing the tarnish long enough to be able to get the lacquer on.

My favourite piece is a Vernier Theodolite made in England in 1864, hand made, solid brass.
I picked this up as a working piece while I was still in the surveying game, I cant post photo's so I will Email a couple of shots I think you will appreciate the craftmanship being the craftsman you are.

Kind Regards
Barry

Man, I could dig them on my porch step but I'd give them two days before they'd be stolen.

Without a doubt noticably exceptional work, before the shine too!

Dazzlin' Claaassy!

*reminds me shine my shoes.  yeah, it is the extent of my skilled trade abilies.  I was always better just to STFU and watch.  In fact, I just dusted this monitor, my other skill,  they ARE shiny.   :o

Jonny, is it true you learned how to shine the knob from Lance?  I hope Don does not get jealous ...

BTW, my knob gets best results when polished with a saliva base ..

Chuck

PS:  Awesome work, as usual!

PPS:  How did those cemetary gates, you told us about, turn out?

Actually, I dont do the welding (But I can)..My partner does, he uses nothing but a TIG welder on all metals because it gives the welder more control of the flow of any welding machine...the fuckin guy is a Master welder...He makes my job (polisher) much easier ;;D

Heres what I use to grind the welds

http://stephenbader.com/assets/images/portfull.jpg

I start with a 1/2" 60 grit grinding belt and step the grit down using surface conditioning belts (3M product) till im able to buff the grit lines out....the finer the grit lines, the easier they come out.... to produce a mirror finish ;;D
