Title: AHS update! Some people I've gotten to meet Post by Lizzie2 on Jun 24th, 2005, 6:22pm Well I'm on day 2 of the American Headache Society conference here in Philly! I'm here at the hotel staying with Teri Robert who is the guide for http://headaches.about.com :) I'm really getting the chance to learn a lot and meet so many people! It's very exciting to have the opportunity to meet people who you've heard about for so long! (And yes, I'm talking about OUCH and ch.com lots!) So...this doesn't even begin to cover all of the people I've met, but here are a few big names you'll recognize! Of course, the Jefferson crew... :) My former neuro who moved to Singapore in fall of 2003 is here! (Dr. Charles Siow) I've gotten to meet both Dr. Sheftell, Dr. Tepper, Dr. Krusz (Dallas), Prof Goadsby (yeah! nice talk about ch :) ), Dr. Lipton, Dr. Loder, and a bunch more! (I'm writing quickly off the top of my head, and I think these names are all familiar to many of you! I'll write more about the conference after it's over!) It has been such an incredible and interesting experience! It is a lot of fun to see all of these different professionals in one place. :) Just wanted to give an update! Hugz to all, Carrie :) |

Title: Re: AHS update! Some people I've gotten to meet Post by Lizzie2 on Jun 24th, 2005, 10:26pm Thanks!! I feel really lucky, in all honesty. First off, with Teri's help and also due to the fact that the convention was in my hometown, I was able to go at all! And, to have this opportunity is pretty golden. :) I wrote a lot down from one of the talks the other day that addressed cluster. Silberstein, Goadsby, and Dodick came out with a new book on Chronic Daily Headache and it has a chapter about chronic CH. Haven't had much time to read thru it yet. It's nice just to listen and 'take it all in.' :) Hugz, carrie :) |

Hiya Bob! Too bad I didn't read this until I got home this afternoon! But...Teri and I did talk about you a couple of times....and no worries, we weren't badmouthing you! I'm sure it came up by my mention of a recent surge towards a variety of alternative CH treatments, which of course was leading us to discuss clusterbusters. She said she'd not had a chance to read your site in awhile (her book comes out November 1, and it's been...crazy busy to say the least!), but at any rate, we were talking about the work you (and others!) have done. :) I didn't get the chance to talk about clusterbusters a great deal with anyone, or even to find out if/what they knew about it. When I've asked some neuros in the past, they haven't known about it. I, personally, haven't even had much time to read through everything on your site, but that doesn't mean that I don't try to see what kind of knowledge base is out there about the topic when I get the chance! Wish there was more time for everything, ya know? hehe Teri has her site and her book as fulltime jobs, and we also had the director of MAGNUM (Michael) there for part of the time. He also does that as his full time job! Then there's me.....well, I probably spend full-time hours doing the work I do (education, research, writing...blah blah), but it's not anything paid! Maybe someday....I was the youngun of us 3, afterall. :) I think getting my nursing curriculum work published would be a good start! Carrie :) |

LOL yeah...kinda like that! I know Teri and I kept talking about how we were kind of in shock over the entire weekend. While Teri, Michael, and I have done different types of work in the migraine and headache field, we do have lots of areas of overlap. They've obviously been doing this for a little longer than I have, and they're also both working at it for a living. I have told Teri repeatedly that she really is a role model for me in my own work. For all 3 of us to be there, I do believe it makes a decent impression...even though we're not the MDs etc (although I'm almost a BSN-RN....so that's gotta count for something!). The physicians who took time to speak with us throughout the conference really showed interest in the various work we do as non-physicians, and I know we sure as heck showed interest in the work they were doing! More than any of the 3 of us being present at the conference alone, the neatest thing was that meetings like this typically don't have people like us...and especially not 3 of us! I know both Teri and I felt really in awe of the amount of knowledge being shared and the fact that we had the opportunity to attend and take part in the conference. Making the contacts was step #1...next part is taking that to the next level. :) That's gotta only lead to positive things for headache sufferers, right? :D Carrie :) |

Thanks Bob! I know that not everyone knows that I started out with New Daily Persistent Headache (NDPH) as my initial whomper of a headache problem. I got that January 17, 2001, and obtained a diagnosis about 11 months later. Never have had a pain free moment since then. The more I learned about migraine and headaches in general, I could trace my history of migraine back to about age 8. One of the big topics presented at the conference was a proposed new criteria for Chronic Daily Headache that will be presented to the IHS for revision of the ICHD-II. While I always had learned about 4 types of CDH, this is definitely not what the ICHD has reflected - in neither I nor II. The new proposed criteria would break it down into the subtypes I was taught - Transformed Migraine, Chronic Tension-Type Headache, New Daily Persistent Headache, and Hemicrania Continua. What's in the ICHD-II right now for these conditions is not overly accurate - and is probably most inaccurate for NDPH with the current IHS criteria. This topic was really one I am very excited about! I began experiencing clusters in the fall of 2003 after having the back of my head attacked by an ice rink <g> - I don't have a clear date of the first attacks because mine appeared to morph into clusters after the injury. The first full-blown one that I can recall was November 20, 2003. I had begun my path to learn all I could for my purpose in the area of migraine and headache not all that long before getting clusters. I'd been learning on my own since I first got the NDPH, but I got my first 'job' (albeit unpaid) doing research for Jefferson Headache Center in the summer of 2003. At that time, I don't think I could have even imagined that 2 years from then, I'd be not only a Trainee member of the American Headache Society - but at a major conference and meeting physicians in person whose work I've read and admired for a few years now! Talk about exciting! I really see it only continuing to go onward and upwards from here - it's sooooooo very cool to see how many opportunities are out there for development in the field. At the same time - no way is there ever enough time to work on all of the ones that interest me!! It's going to take days of rereading through presentations, poster presentation handouts, literature, and personal notes to really grasp all that I learned since it was about 3.5 days of lectures and presentations on top of the time spent meeting and making contacts. I really have Teri to thank 100% for her help in doing that. If it weren't for her, I probably would not have felt as comfortable just randomly walking up to physicians to talk to them! Talk about really mind-boggling! I only slept about an hour last night due to CH, and today was really draining in a lot of ways, but I haven't been able to sleep tonight just still running over the conference in my head and all the ideas and more questions it is creating! Gotta be up at about 5:45 though to be back down at Jefferson - neonatal nursing career starts today with orientation from 8-4. Just can't get away from that place! ;;D You done good, too - Bob! Carrie :) |
