I was reading about this the other day. The article I read said that since the world is sending more money in than they would normally make by any other means, they were taking any money they made and investing in other countries and living off the aid the world sent in. The more you give people, the less people will work for themselves. Hmmm, sounds like another country I know of.

WTF? We have plenty of our own homeless and hungry to feed in THIS nation! How about a "Live Aid" concert so that people can afford medical care?

Let Africa solve their own problems. >:(

Just like in that other country... The powerful and connected are living off that money, not the regular folks. The key to financial aid for Africa is where you choose to put the money. Funnel in cash and it will not work it's way down to the people it was intended for. Send money to a place that is actually doing something positive (like the Carter Foundation that provides clean water filtering systems) and the "big shots" don't see a dime.

fuck im sitting here no job no money no nothing think i can get help hell fucking no it makes me sick , these people need to fix they,re own damn shit and stop being leaches on the planet , every dime goes to fat greedy goverment down there and the sad part is everone knows this yet they send more money, i feel bad for the aids victims but god wear a fucking condom if ya dont then its your own freaking fault stop crying to the world and get a life losers.

Actually, the tribal divisions in Africa were not divisions among the Africans themselves. It was for European colonization gain. They got a lot out of making artificial boundaries and inspiting hate that, now that they're out of it, these tribes have acquired as "real." Many of the tribes in West Africa would not be warring if it weren't for those artificial divisions.

And then it goes further into the division of nations. Again, European colonization...

So...the problems in Africa were very largely inspired by the colonization of Africa by non-Africans. For all historical purposes, it really is sad that outsiders set up these conflicts, and now everyone thinks "Africa should take care of itself." Nice position to put them in...

What we hear on the news about Africa is not even close to the real picture of the continent. My passion to go there for medical relief aid began when I was in junior high. I may not ever get there, but I really would like to.

Sure, I wish our own nation would take care of our increasingly disasterous health care system, but they seem intent on making sure that no progress is made.

We're not giving all of Africa handouts. You don't really hear the story of the innocent people over there who want no part in the war and are barely hanging on to dear life.

Ah well...whatever you want to think. Pretty uninformed though, IMHO. Yes, there is a great deal of corruption in Africa on many levels, but it is important to view the ENTIRE picture...or at least try to dig into as much of it as is available to us.

Couple o Points

If success were to be defined as peaceful co-existence, a structure of laws, and economic opportunity then I sure do ponder this:

There has never in the known history of the Continent of Africa ever been a successful country or province regardless of whether the English colonized a fraction or the French on the Ivory Coast did. If you consider just the 'peace' part of the definition then perhaps Shaka came closest by using a big stick to whip folks into shape and a shroud of death to countries that neighbored Zululand.

The influx of money (which cures all, haven't ya heard) through the decades has never trickled down to the people that needed it but rather, as is typical, went to support petty dictators or outright warlords. In a Continent as rich in natural resources as Africa and a thousand years with which to culvitate a livable community---well, I'm not sure what to say next. However, I'll be dipped to see more of the tax dollars extorted from us find their ultimate destination in that bottomless pit of neverending chaos.
