Title: Japanese beetles Everywhere! Post by LadyElaine on Jun 20th, 2005, 3:58pm I been killing them all day all yesterday. Hundreds of the little plant eatters. My roses :'( My black berrys :'( my sod [smiley=bigcry.gif] I read on the internet that traps just make them worst. How can it get worst? I am going back out and kill beetles. Anyone want to help just come on down, bring a net and hard shoes. :'( :'( :'( :'( |

Maybe the other Japanese beetles hear the screams of their trapped friends and, like humans, all come to watch to see what's going to happen next -- and then decide to snack while they're waiting. :) |

Title: Re: Japanese beetles Everywhere! Post by Frank_W on Jun 20th, 2005, 4:14pm The traps DO make them worse. Go to your local Co-Op, nursery, or Ag Center and they make a chemical that you can use to eliminate them. We've got them all over the place here in Tennessee, too. Once the little bodies begin piling up, they stink like a rotting corpse. They are enough to gag a maggot. [smiley=hurl.gif] |

Title: Re: Japanese beetles Everywhere! Post by maffumatt on Jun 20th, 2005, 4:45pm If you live out of town, get a few batam chickens, or a few guineas. You will be surprised how much they eat, plus you get some eggs. |

Title: Re: Japanese beetles Everywhere! Post by LadyElaine on Jun 20th, 2005, 6:13pm Yep Vig, thats what they look like and thats what my plants look like !! >:( Chickens hmmm I been wanting some chickens. I want a chicken house and all but I am afraid my dogs will kill them. Maybe I could get baby chicks and make the dogs think they are their moms. Oh Buddy read this thread and get me some chicks Please! |

Title: Re: Japanese beetles Everywhere! Post by maffumatt on Jun 20th, 2005, 6:55pm Before I moved up here I used to raise Batam breeds for the local FFA kids. At one time I had over 500 birds runnig around. I normaly kept about 50 for breeding. There wasn't so much as a cricket around my place. They will even eat the larva out of fire and mounds. Just remember if you let them out, if you want 15, get 20. 15 for you, 5 for the critters that are going to come up and eat them. Everything eats chicken, from feral cats to snakes and coons. |

Title: Re: Japanese beetles Everywhere! Post by Kris_in_SJ on Jun 20th, 2005, 8:53pm I'm so sorry ..... They haven't awakened here in Michigan yet, but soon, I'm sure. As far as I'm concerned they're like the locust plagues in the past. I buy a product called "Bug B Gone" and make several daily trips through my gardens to zap them. This only works if you work at home and can make several visits/day. I've tried grub control, that special bacteria spray, etc. Traps are useless - only invite more to your house. I also walk through the garden as the sun goes down with a coffee can full of water and dishwashing liquid - flip them off into the can and watch them drown. That's the most satisfying method of all. When you love to garden, there's no worse predator! My heart and soul are with you, my friend. Kris |

Title: Re: Japanese beetles Everywhere! Post by cootie on Jun 21st, 2005, 1:07am What about settin several of the beetle atracting traps OUTSIDE the garden area away from plants.........maybe they'll all rush to 'shop' there verses your garden. Shop till you drop Pam PS: I had chickens for YEARS here and ended up pennin them up......they took dust baths in my flower beds and killed everything !!!! And they scratched and pecked around roots for grubs ect and damaged stuff from all angles. I liked havien em.....(had bantums and ginea's too.....racoons and weasel came regularly for dinner and picked em off one a nite)......but if ya have alot of plants like I do now and flower beds it 'didn't work' I had them loose. Plus they perched on the front porch railing and picnic tables out back........looked like hillbilly heaven. Chicken shit piled up EVERYWHERE.....it carries coccidia.......dirty birdy Pam |

Title: Re: Japanese beetles Everywhere! Post by TomM on Jun 22nd, 2005, 8:47am How do traps make it worse???? [smiley=huh.gif] I thought if the trap is set upwind of the roses, it prevents them from gettng to the rose. Aren't they the larvae from grubs? TomM with a few questions.... |
||
Title: Re: Japanese beetles Everywhere! Post by Frank_W on Jun 22nd, 2005, 9:18am Traps make them worse because they attract SO many more from the surrounding area, and all they do is eat and screw. (Come to think of it, that sounds like a pretty good life! [smiley=laugh.gif]) Before they die, they produce more larva, which causes a worse problem the next year, and the next, until it snowballs. |

You try to find one from somewhere else, we'll call her "Yoko", to make it with one of the group of beetles affecting your yard, then she will eventually create such discord amongst the beetles that they will disband and go off somewhere else. |

Title: Re: Japanese beetles Everywhere! Post by Bob P on Jun 22nd, 2005, 12:18pm My answer to everything - chemical warfare! I was lucky enough to stock up on chlordane before they banned it. When all else fails, chlordane (DDT). |

Title: Re: Japanese beetles Everywhere! Post by LadyElaine on Jun 22nd, 2005, 1:07pm Come on guys no bashing or fussing Please! I post things that seem funny to me, cause I like to laugh. The fussing and stuff I could do without. My lawn and plants cost me over a $1000 dollars watching my lawn and my trees and plants just die makes me sick. I got to laugh about stuff and I knew you all would make me. I have to admit if that stuff was still around I would probley use it, cause the crap they got out now is not working. Oh top of that the misquitios are bad. Misquitos carry all kinds of bad stuff for our animals and humans. Its a toss up. Chemicals getting you or the bugs. Both suck. Can we all just be friends Please! |

Title: Re: Japanese beetles Everywhere! Post by nani on Jun 22nd, 2005, 1:26pm Sorry, Elaine. You're right about insect bourne disease and chemicals. Neither one is OK. I like to use natural pest controls. There are pesticides made from natural ingredients and there are also predatory insects that might help. I use this company... http://www.gardensalive.com/Default.asp?bhcd2=1119472589 I always like to keep things as natural as possible because I have kids around. |

Title: Re: Japanese beetles Everywhere! Post by Bob P on Jun 22nd, 2005, 1:41pm Our local endangered species is the banded dune snail. The world ain't gonna stop if that little bastard goes the way of the Dodo! A small housing development next to the Bay had to buy extra land to create a snail sanctuary before they could build thier houses. A friend has a half million dollar lot that he can't build on because they found one empty snail shell on his property. The tree huggers are out of control! |

Title: Re: Japanese beetles Everywhere! Post by seasonalboomer on Jun 22nd, 2005, 2:04pm damn evolution keepin my boys (dune snails) stuck in the muck. maybe we could get them to evolve quicker so that they develop some ability to bite back. |

Title: Re: Japanese beetles Everywhere! Post by MargaretG on Jun 24th, 2005, 7:57pm Thus far we've been spared the plague of the Japanese Beetles. Seems like the Aisian Ladybugs and ants have taken over though. The ladybugs are supposed to help keep other insects cleaned out, but I don't know if that works with Japanese beetles. I wonder if diazinon would work, it's usually used for fleas & ticks, but do be careful with your dogs(and cats if applicable) if you use any chemicals because they can absorb chemicals through the pads of their feet. Let us know if you find a workable solution. |

Title: Re: Japanese beetles Everywhere! Post by Charlie on Jun 24th, 2005, 10:16pm You ain't gonna believe this Bob, but I'm pretty much on your side. So long as you don't go nuts, spraying does more good than harm. It's like the people who are terrified of genetically enhanced grains and pay through the nose for organic stuff at the market. I think it's nuts. That wheat has saved millions and millions of lives. You can overdo it but we've done pretty damn well so far. Charlie http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/spray.gif |
