Title: Flip-Flops!!! (WTF?!) Post by Lizzie2 on Jun 16th, 2005, 9:39pm I'm currently in Sarasota, Florida on an island called Siesta Key. Been coming here literally since I was a fetus. My grandparents bought their place here in 1970 as the building was still under construction, and I was born in 1980...can't remember a time when this place wasn't home. Always very safe, and the people are very friendly. In March, my little bro came down here for spring break from college. He had bought these $85 Rainbow sandles. Well, we have these cement benches right at the top of the steps going down to the beach. Everyone leaves their sandles there and goes to the beach. Someone swiped my bro's sandles. I couldn't believe someone would do that here!! But then...they were pricey sandles and it *was* spring break. But Siesta Key and Sarasota are mostly retirement places!! So...I went to the beach today for awhile. I have these little Reef flip-flops that I've had for about 5 years or so now. I wear them ALL the time. Simple little flip-flops...prolly cost about $30. It's off-season here right now, so it's not even like there's a ton of people my age looking to steal some shoes. I get up to the top of the steps today...Nowhere to be found!!! We put up a note. :( Now.......in 24 years, I've never had anything taken. Not a pair of shoes, not a camera, walkman, or wallet in a bag on the beach lounge...nothing. This year, BOTH my brother and I had shoes stolen several months apart?!?! Some people... >:( I actually did think it was kinda a little funny though. ;) Carrie/L2 :) |

It makes you wonder.....did the person who stole them come to the beach without their own flip flops? or did they take yours by mistake? Maybe you should go back there late tonight and see if someone else's flip flops are there. If so, maybe they just took the wrong ones. or maybe they were just in need of some money so they go around stealing flip flops, stripping them down and then selling them for parts. Check ebay, I think I saw an auction for a left toe divider thingy! |

Title: Re: Flip-Flops!!! (WTF?!) Post by cootie on Jun 16th, 2005, 10:45pm I noticed when I was at the beach last summer that alot of people do leave stuff set out and either take a walk or go stand in or near the water. Guess it's only a matter of time before people figure out how EASY it is to steal shit and scan the areas for people leavein stuff. I got a nice jakcet RIPPED last weekend.....sort of upset me cuz it was one I bought and redone and put a patch on back that looked really cool. I personalize everything and custom make stuff fit me or redo things. Left it on my chair at a resturant and called them when I got home and it was GONE......no one turned it in and it wasn't there or on the floor or nothing ! First time that's happen'd to me......it wasn't a jacket you could just go out and buy either since I had redone it cool. So someday I expect to see it again ON SOMEONE and they won't be able to tell me they bought it. I am just hopeing it is not someone bigger then me cuz I am gonna be pissed !! I buy the 99 cent flip flops.....seems ya can't take anything worth somethin anywhere anymore without someone stealin it. Mite as well dress like a peasant Pam |

See...the first part you wrote there is what my grandma was suggesting. We did want to try to think the best and that someone had just picked them up by mistake. (Remind me to tell you the story about my backpack being 'stolen' by mistake when I was at Penn State once I get home) However, no other flip-flops looked like mine! So we put up a sign requesting them to be returned. At any rate, I looked all around - and it wasn't like they could have been mistaken with another pair! Most of the sandles there were those Adidas ones and all that type. Ah well... Pam - your stories never cease to amaze me!!! I do feel nervous leaving anything on the beach when I'm in Jersey - but this place really is not like that. The people couldn't be sweeter - the ones that live on this key are almost all over 65 or so! To quote a very cynical (and hilariously funny) book that I bought not that long ago: "I felt sad because I had no shoes, but then I met a man who had no feet. So I said 'hey footless dude, don't mind if I take your shoes?'" [smiley=laugh.gif] |

Title: Re: Flip-Flops!!! (WTF?!) Post by cootie on Jun 16th, 2005, 11:31pm IDEA.......get some other flip flops that 'llok decent or expensive' and set em out as usual and go hide or be somewhere where you can see them and maybe the same person is nabbing them and does it cuz there WIERD and decorate there house or apt with sandles and flip flops or they have some other master plan. Evil shoe knombs Pam (hope they don't start stealin underwear next !!) |

Title: Re: Flip-Flops!!! (WTF?!) Post by sandie99 on Jun 17th, 2005, 3:02am Carrie... the only time somebody stole something which was mine was, interestingly, in Florida. It took place in December 1991 in Miami Beach. On beautiful, sunny beach. And what was lost, was, even more interestingly, my shoes! Not flip flops, though. I was bit mad, because my dad was supposed to watch over them while I was swimming, but apparently he had something better to do. Anyway, Carrie, I think it's wonderful that there's a place outside home you feel like home! I feel that way about our summer cottage in Middle Finland, in a small city called Viitasaari. It I'd translate the same, it would be Woodisland... ;) Having said that, that same journey, 2 weeks in Florida, was the best journey I've ever been to. I've been lucky and I've got to see world already more than I could have ever imagined. But that 2 weeks with my parents, aunt and 2 cousins was incredible! Those of you who live in Florida... I warn you, I might return one of these days! ;) Best wishes, Sanna/sandie99 |

Title: Re: Flip-Flops!!! (WTF?!) Post by Jimmy_B on Jun 17th, 2005, 6:49am I quess there goes my brilliant idea of putting my wallet in my sneakers when I leave the beach blanket. Those sneakers were like a Bank Vault, on the beach. My wallet, rings, watches, anything of value went into those old sneakers. Now with a flip-flop felon on the loose. What am I to do. They may move up to stinky sneakers. :D Jimmy |
