You can still eat it.  My favorite was the omelette with ham.

Growing up, my dad had an army surplus store, one of the worst ass kickings he gave me was the time I opened up a pack of K rations he had on display , not C but K, they were dated 1942, and had a 4 pack of Chesterfields in them. The chocolate  was a little stale, the crackers turned to dust, and the smokes burned like they were soaked with gas.

I remember once when a reserve unit from Hawaii stopped in and he cashed some personal checks for them, no one else would, anyway they gave him several cases of MREs a couple smoke grenades and a few other items. My parents had divorced not long before and I was liveing with him. We ate MREs for about a month. Great  bachelor  food.

Some do come with a chemically activated heating sleeve.  Otherwise, you can just put it down your pants for a while.  Or you could just be a man and eat the thing cold.

Edit to add this is thomas posting, now get those thoughts of Gena putting stuff down her pants out of your heads.

Crackers and peanut butter... LOL  One night, my wife and me fixed up a supper for ourselves with about four different MREs that her brother gave us... Crackers and peanut butter was the only thing that tasted like the name... If ya don't want to use the heater included in the pack, squeeze it into a dish, and nuke it for a bit.

If I remember correctly they gave you heat packs similar  to the packs that you use to warm your hands.

That's why I joined the Navy. No matter how bad things got...you always had  hot food and a warm rack.

Our motto was "God Bless the sailors in turret #2...God keep us safe and keep the cook safe, too."
