Leonardo Da Vinci invented scissors. Also, it took him 10 years to paint Mona Lisa's lips. False. Although there is a fascinating story behind the Mona Lisa, there's no firm accounts of exactly how long it took him to paint it, certainly not down to the lips. As for scissors, he drew sketches of thousands of things, scissors probably among them. However, he made very little in reality. . |

Speaking from experience, that is absolutely true. 40. Astronauts are not allowed to eat beans before they go into space! Because passing wind in a space suit damages them. False. In fact NASA specifically studied flatulence in detail before the space program started to make sure they could deal with it. It's a vaporous gas that stimulates the tear ducts: "Onions produce the chemical irritant known as syn-propanethial-S-oxide. It stimulates the eyes' lachrymal glands so they release tears. Scientists used to blame the enzyme allinase for the instability of substances in a cut onion. Recent studies from Japan, however, proved that lachrymatory-factor synthase, (a previously undiscovered enzyme) is the culprit (Imani et al, 2002). The process goes as follows: 1. Lachrymatory-factor synthase is released into the air when we cut an onion. 2. The synthase enzyme converts the sulfoxides (amino acids) of the onion into sulfenic acid. 3. The unstable sulfenic acid rearranges itself into syn-ropanethial-S-oxide. 4. Syn-propanethial-S-oxide gets into the air and comes in contact with our eyes. The lachrymal glands become irritated and produces the tears!" The root section of the onion has a higher concentration of the enzyme, so you can reduce the reaction by cutting more of the root section off prior to slicing. Chocolate: I once had a dog who was probably about 10 - 12 pounds who got into a 1 pound bag of almond Hershey Kisses and ate all of them. She was a chocolate freak and survived all of her chocolate eating. Probably a rare case but it never seemed to have any effect on her. Quick sand: I saw an interesting show about quick sand on Myth Busters one day and they proved that the human body will not sink all the way under in quick sand no matter what the person is doing. The human body is more bouyant than the quick sand and will only sink to about shoulder height. When pushed under, you will float back up and out like a fishing bobber. |

One day, while getting ready to go to work, I tried to eat one of these pieces of candy. My wife told me she would break my fingers if I touched them. (This is what she gets for not sharing.) When we got home that afternoon, we couldn't find the candy. They're pretty hard to miss since they are wrapped in gold colored foil. She blamed me. I blamed the kids. Everybody was pissed at each other. The next morning, I wake to the sound of my wife laughing like a maniac, I come in to find her laughing at the 5 or 6 golden turds laying on the dining room floor. Case closed. I'm innocent. |
