Title: Nerve Block??
Post by tpitts77 on May 16th, 2005, 8:38am
Has anyone ever got a nerve block to relieve CH?  I got a consult and was going to try it a couple years ago, but the meds started working.  The meds seem to be becoming less effective the longer I take them.

Any pros/cons with the nerve block?

A liitle about myself.  Chronic 9 years.  Verapamil and indocin daily.  Imitrex as needed. Prednisone when they get real bad.

Thanks for any advice.

Tony

There are a few threads on the meds board on it. I don't think I'd do it. Have you tried any of the alternative treatments?

My advice would be.... Lithium.  It works wonders for some of us chronics.
Don't think the optical nerve block has much sucess for Ch, otherwise we would all be doing it.

Which nerve?  Occipital, supra-orbital, supra-trochlear?

Tried the Occipital Nerve Block about 4 years ago now--did nothing but give me the willies as the needle was going through scalp.
Had no effect whatever on the H/A's.

Recommend the natural treatment: www.clusterbusters.com

I don't remember which nerve they were going to block.  It was on my neck near my hair line.

Thanks for the advice.

tpitts77..

When I was first diagnosed with CH's,  I was given Nerve Block Injections by my doctor in Racine, WS. Most doctors don't know anything about CH's now and when I  first started having them, they knew even less. I guess they had no idea how to treat them other than turning me into a Zombie.. I would received injections in the back of my head, right below the skull. The only way that I knew that I had a head was to reach up and touch it..  It was no fun feeling, and I was depressed much of the time. :'(  I continued to receive Nerve Blocks after moving back to Illinois for a short time.

Nerve Block Injections is something that you want to really think about. Unless NB's have changed drastically over the years, I would have to completely run out of options, before I would ever take them again.

During this years Meet and Greet in DavCon, I was speaking to some of my CH's family members about my experience with Nerve Blocks and it  brought back some very unpleasent memories..

Many Blessings in what every you decide to to, but please think about it and research it thoroughly, before proceeding.

Peace & Blessings
LL

I did a nerve block and acupuncture and neither one was a success.  I Had a numb head (nerve block)but it did nothing for the headache.  And the accupuncture triggered the CH rather then helped it.

I have had a few different ones.  I had the Nerve block injections.  The first one gave me 4 days PF but after that nothing, but all actually cause me more local pain.  Found out now that I also have Occipital Neuralgia on top fo the CH.  So if my Occipital Nerve gets screwed up it will actually trigger more CH'es then I get normally.  I also had an RFG done on my Occipital Nerve. The idea was that they would strip the nerve and I would get 3 mo to 12 mo relief before the nerve completly grew back.  Well That did not work either, besides just having the crap scared out of me because they could put me under because I might move. So I was awake and having them tell me to not move the entire time because they where so close to my spinal collum that if I moved they might hit hte wrong nerve and it could have "serious reprocussions."

I personally would never do either again.  I know that other have had nominal relief.  Unsolves had 17 days PF with his first block, but it did not help him after that.  I would look into other treatment before I would let another Dr do anything like that again.

Look into the Kudzu or LSA, is my advise before going this route.

PF Wishes,
-Tia
