More than a decade later, Halpern is now an associate director of substance abuse research at Harvard University's McLean Hospital and is at the forefront of a revival of research into psychedelic medicine. He recently received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to give late-stage cancer patients the psychedelic drug MDMA, also known as ecstasy. He is also laying the groundwork for testing LSD as a treatment for dreaded super-migraines known as cluster headaches.

I actually wrote a letter to Harvard shortly after hearing about it a couple of months ago. I know a few others also wrote Harvard, and I am just wondering if anyone has heard back from them. Still waiting here.

Peace,

I have recent correspondance with Dr. Sewell...  it is as follows

Hi Mr. Olsen--

Nice to hear from you again.  I'll be happy to give you a quick update.  The first draft of the case series is written, and it's been a mammoth understaking, mostly because the clusterbusters people are so enthusiastic, as you know!  I'm actually here at work on this rainy Saturday making revisions.  I aim to have the final draft finished over the next couple of days, then submit it to a journal next week.  Then it'll either be sent back for revisions or rejected, in which case I'll have to submit it somewhere else. I'd say we're a good few months from seeing anything in print.  Nonetheless, once it's submitted we'll be free to start work on a protocol for a randomized controlled clinical trial, which this case series is merely laying the groundwork for.

Ken--

Actually, there is. As you know it's a controversial study we are proposing to do, and one of the arguments in favor of doing it is that cluster headache is such an awful disease to have. Unfortunately, people who do not have cluster attacks frequently underestimate the their severity, thinking, "Oh, I've had headaches." So if you have any video of clusterheads in the middle of an attack that I could show during a presentation, I'd appreciate it! There's nothing like seeing one to convince people how bad they are.

At least he didn't call us slavedrivers.

I'll have to write him and ask him if he planned on taking Sunday off.  ;;D

He has that one Barb. Justin and Chuck were kind enough to let us bring it to Boston. It made quite an impression. I think I saw a painting of a 200 year old dead white guy on the wall, actually wince a couple times.
