Title: Your first record
Post by sandie99 on May 4th, 2005, 8:51am
My & my friends were talking about what was the first record we ever bought.

The truth is that I can't recall whether it was

Bonnie Tyler: Bitterblue   or
Michael Jackson: Dangerous.

I still have both of them.  :)

It was a 78 (that's a record kids  8) ) and probably some kid's thing. I really can't remember. Later, some movie  theme probably. Damn 78s are brittle.

Yeah Charlie and there just ain't that many of us who ACTUALLY remember playing the old 78's. Remember how they'd scratch? Hated it when that happened.

And the 33 1/3rd if you could afford a "long playing" one.

I've got an old stereo that belonged to my mom in my office that has 78-45-33 and 8-track tapes -- and have the records and tapes to go with it. Now that's MUSIC!

not necessarily so, Barb - I happen to have an antique 78 record player/radio in my living room.  It was my grandparents' originally and it still works! Georgeous piece of furniture, too!

I remember Gramps had a prize collection of 78's - Spike Jones comes to mind  ::) - and we grandkids would have to sit and listen to them while he lectured us about "real" music.  Then we'd go downstairs and play Led Zep, Alice Cooper, Grank Funk, etc. on the 'hi-fi'.

Sadly, Gramps had a great idea and sold ALL his 78's at a garage sale (he was mad at my Gramma, most probably).  So now we have the player but no records!

1st 78? wow

I think it was some Josie & The Pu$$ycats thing. I do remember it was yellow and it worked in my close & play.

First 8-track - Grateful Dead: Bears Choice Volume 1

First 45 - I think it was The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald (Gordon Lightfoot)

And first LP - Joel Grey - Songs My Father Taught Me

First cassette was Rhinestone Cowboy (Glenn Campbell)

In 1952 my father bought a new Lincoln Capri. It had a fancy push button radio with 'seek' feature. Hit the seek button and it would scroll across the dial face (no, not digital) and stop on each AM station. Pretty damned great.
Bad part is

I was with him. 53 years ago!

In 1964 I had a new 4-track player in my '47 Ford.

My guess is the first record I heard was from the stack of old RCA 78s that my grandparents had at our camp. They stocked it in the 20s and if you didn't wanna hear Enrico Caruso, you had to listen to "When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder, I'll Be There." Not a lot of choice at the time those were recorded.

The much older 78s were heavy and very thick, not like  the ones we are talking about. I used to see them at antique shops, Edison cylinders are always there of course.

Ah me.

I had an Aunt and Uncle in Houston who had a Victrola in their livingroom.  This was 30+ years ago, but it still worked back then.  When we'd visit, they'd crank it up and play their albums for us.  I'd love to have that thing now.

Well...I got my first dual-cassette radio somewhere between 1989 and 1992.  (The years I lived outside of Cleveland).  I didn't buy them myself, but the first casettes I owned were Mariah Carey's first album (includes the song Vision of Love - or maybe that's the title of the album - either way, the song is on it and I can still picture the label!)

The other one was Amy Grant's first pop album which had the song "Baby, baby" on it.  Can't remember the name of that one or what other music is on it!

Guess I'm making myself look really young!

I listened to tons of music my whole life before that, but those were the very first tapes I ever owned myself!

I forget what my first CD was, but my first DVD I owned was "A Beautiful Mind" once I got my own DVD player. :)

The first 45 I ever had as my own was The Rolling Stones - Honkey Tonk Woman. The other one was CCR - Green River b/w Commotion.

The first albums I owned were given to me by aunts and cousins who saw what a tunehead I was as a baby. I couldn't sleep or nap without a radio on.

As a kid in the 70's, the first album I ever bought was
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000001EL5.01._PE8_SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Then I got
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000002KG4.01._SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Which was soon followed by an 8-track of
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000002KGA.01._SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg
and
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000001ESL.01._SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg

It was pretty heady stuff for an 8 year old! Hemispheres is still one of my favorite albums.

I have a large vinyl collection.............my boyfreind used to play Paint it Black and Little Black Egg on the guitar.....

I don't care what they say,
I'm gonna keep it anyway.
I won't let them stretch their necks,
To see my little black egg with the little white specks.
I found it in a tree just the other day,
Now it's mine all mine, they can't take it away.
There comes Mary, there comes Lee :
I'll bet what they want to see.
I won't let them stretch their necks

You KIDS just don't know music if you've never listened to Frank Sinatra (I did it my way....) or Perry Come (Hot Ziggedy Zong what you do to me....) -- now THAT was music.

Oh, a bit of trivia -- Perry Como lived in JUPITER FL (the same town where Kip lives). I thought that was just totally special.... :P  And KIP is OLD enough to remember him.....

Oh and something else....

When I was in college I did a thesis on Rock 'n Roll music: Lyrics, dress, and parental attitudes.

Turned out, after weeks of research (and 8 hours of watching MTV - cruel and inhumane punishment for research) - nothing has really changed. Parents are still bitching about this "new fangled" stuff that kids listen to, kids are still trying to "find themselves" with outrageous dress, and the words (if you can hear them) on the records aren't much more "suggestive" than they were back in the 30s. (Example - My Heart belongs to Daddy -30s -- Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend - 50s -- Material Girl - 80s)

K T Oslan (msp) put it well in 80s Ladies -- Our kids are trying to be what we were back then (or something on that order).

So I guess history does repeat itself every generation..... ;;D

Yeah, baby!  I love this song!!!

Wasn't that a party

Could have been the whiskey, might have been the gin.
Could have been three or four six-packs,
I don't know, but look at the mess I'm in,
My head is like a football, I think I'm gonna die,
Tell me, me oh me oh my,
Wasn't that a party?

Someone took a grapefruit and wore it like a hat,
I saw someone under my kitchen table, talking to my old tom cat,
They were talking about hockey and the cat was talkin' back,
Along about then everything went black,
But wasn't that a party?

I'm sure it's just my memory playin' tricks on me,
But I think I saw my buddy cuttin' down my neighbour's tree,

Could have been the whiskey, might have been the gin.
Could have been three or four six-packs,
I don't know, but look at the mess I'm in,
My head is like a football, I think I'm gonna die,
Tell me, me oh me oh my,
Wasn't that a party?

Old Billy Joe and Tommy, well they went a little far,
They were sitting in my backyard blowing on the siren in somebody's police car.
So you see, your honour,
It was all in fun,
That little bitty track meet down on main street,
Was just to see if the cops could run,
Well, they run us in to see you,
In an alcoholic haze,
I can sure use those thirty days to recover from the party.

Could have been the whiskey, might have been the gin.
Could have been three or four six-packs,
I don't know, but look at the mess I'm in,
My head is like a football, I think I'm gonna die,
Tell me, me oh me oh my,
Wasn't that a party?

I can't remember which one I bought first, but in 1958 I started buying 45's from the pop charts.  Here's some:
Danny and the Juniors-"At the Hop"
Fat's Domino-"Blueberry Hill"
Johnny Mathis-"It's not for me to Say"
Rick Nelson-"Poor Little Fool"
Everly Bros.-"Wake up Little Susie"
Jerry Lee Lewis-"Great Balls of Fire"
Paul Anka-"Diana"

Last, but not least: Buddy Holly-"Peggy Sue"

That stuff got our feet movin' ;;D

Now you did it!!! Made me really nostalgic (can't spell for the lump in my throat). I'm ready to dress up in my poodle skirt and go to the hop! Think I've danced about a million miles to those tunes.

Kids today just don't know what they're missing.

And P.S. Margi -- now that you're to become a grandmother -- does this make you as OLD as me [smiley=huh.gif] [smiley=huh.gif] [smiley=huh.gif]

I love that album (wasn't my first) also loved their bikes on the cover, [smiley=eek.gif]

The bikes were on the album before their "Live" album.  That one was "James Gang Rides Again", I think.
The "Live" album has three horses hitched up in front of Carnegie Hall and on the back cover they are sweeping and shoveling up the horse sh!t.  The sign up at the entrance of Carnegie says, "James Gang Rides Again" on the "Live" album. ('71)
After getting "Rides Again", I sure as hell bought the "Live" album fast.   ;)    Great album Lizzie.

LMAO sorry, but I just had to ask it!

And hey Barb...remember that I was a piano performance major, right???  I have more cds of Sinatra and all the otherse from the big band era (my favourite jazz era) than I know what to do with!  I know how to swing dance and everything. :)  In my final music theory class, I took Jazz Improv...for the final project, we had to do a transcription of a great improv solo and perform it in class.

I transcribed Ella Fitzgerald's big improv (first half of it) from "Blue Skies" and sang it in class.  It went really well!  I looooooooooove that music!!!

So if we're going to talk about "old" music - I'm probably one of the only few here who can name a Buxtehude or Bach organ work just by hearing a few bars of it.  Now THAT'S old.

Good thing they still teach us "kids today" about history! ;)

Lizzie :)   ;;D

He's prolly confus-ed because the picture of the skating kid was always the one I had at the left of my posts.  It still throws me off when I read your posts! hehe  I'm like..."oh when did I post here?  Oh wait!  Not me...duh..."

I did figure skating in college!  I switched my picture at the left to a picture of me, but then it kept not showing up, so I just switched it to the little bird with the heart. :)

LOL

Hey Charlie, that's mostly what I sell on ebay. I think my first record was Aerosmith "Get Your Wings". I've had so many I can't remember for sure.

W :-*W... I can't remember my first record, because I purchased them constantly. My Aunt's boyfriend use to service the juke boxes around town and I would purchase records from him @ a discount when ever he changed them.

I still have a very nice collection of 45's, 33-1/3rd's (most in their original covers), as well as many 8 tracks.. All my 78's got ruined when my basement flooded several years ago. I still have the plastic and medal centers that goes in the 45's, and two record players to play them on [smiley=laugh.gif].

In the last ten years I've helped planned one and attended another by invite,  parties where the guests wore poodle skirts, bell bottoms, Naru Suits, tennis shoes and bobbie socks and other clothing from back in the day;
[smiley=shore.gif] and we only played 8 tracks and 45 records.

Thanks for the memories..

Lady Luv
