not necessarily so, Barb - I happen to have an antique 78 record player/radio in my living room. It was my grandparents' originally and it still works! Georgeous piece of furniture, too! I remember Gramps had a prize collection of 78's - Spike Jones comes to mind ::) - and we grandkids would have to sit and listen to them while he lectured us about "real" music. Then we'd go downstairs and play Led Zep, Alice Cooper, Grank Funk, etc. on the 'hi-fi'. Sadly, Gramps had a great idea and sold ALL his 78's at a garage sale (he was mad at my Gramma, most probably). So now we have the player but no records! |

My guess is the first record I heard was from the stack of old RCA 78s that my grandparents had at our camp. They stocked it in the 20s and if you didn't wanna hear Enrico Caruso, you had to listen to "When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder, I'll Be There." Not a lot of choice at the time those were recorded. The much older 78s were heavy and very thick, not like the ones we are talking about. I used to see them at antique shops, Edison cylinders are always there of course. Ah me. Title: Re: Your first record Post by Lizzie2 on May 4th, 2005, 8:48pm Well...I got my first dual-cassette radio somewhere between 1989 and 1992. (The years I lived outside of Cleveland). I didn't buy them myself, but the first casettes I owned were Mariah Carey's first album (includes the song Vision of Love - or maybe that's the title of the album - either way, the song is on it and I can still picture the label!) The other one was Amy Grant's first pop album which had the song "Baby, baby" on it. Can't remember the name of that one or what other music is on it! Guess I'm making myself look really young! I listened to tons of music my whole life before that, but those were the very first tapes I ever owned myself! I forget what my first CD was, but my first DVD I owned was "A Beautiful Mind" once I got my own DVD player. :) Lizzie :) |

Title: Re: Your first record Post by BarbaraD on May 5th, 2005, 7:25am Oh and something else.... When I was in college I did a thesis on Rock 'n Roll music: Lyrics, dress, and parental attitudes. Turned out, after weeks of research (and 8 hours of watching MTV - cruel and inhumane punishment for research) - nothing has really changed. Parents are still bitching about this "new fangled" stuff that kids listen to, kids are still trying to "find themselves" with outrageous dress, and the words (if you can hear them) on the records aren't much more "suggestive" than they were back in the 30s. (Example - My Heart belongs to Daddy -30s -- Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend - 50s -- Material Girl - 80s) K T Oslan (msp) put it well in 80s Ladies -- Our kids are trying to be what we were back then (or something on that order). So I guess history does repeat itself every generation..... ;;D Hugs BD |

I have more cds of Sinatra and all the otherse from the big band era (my favourite jazz era) than I know what to do with! I know how to swing dance and everything. :) In my final music theory class, I took Jazz Improv...for the final project, we had to do a transcription of a great improv solo and perform it in class. I transcribed Ella Fitzgerald's big improv (first half of it) from "Blue Skies" and sang it in class. It went really well! I looooooooooove that music!!! So if we're going to talk about "old" music - I'm probably one of the only few here who can name a Buxtehude or Bach organ work just by hearing a few bars of it. Now THAT'S old. Sorry Candy. What was I thinking, 24 year old Lizzie talking about a first album being a 34 year old rock album . :) Happens to me all the time with Playboy. Lookin' at the pictures and didn't catch the name. ::) Kevin M |

Hey Charlie, that's mostly what I sell on ebay. I think my first record was Aerosmith "Get Your Wings". I've had so many I can't remember for sure. |

Title: Re: Your first record Post by LadyLuv on May 6th, 2005, 6:03pm W :-*W... I can't remember my first record, because I purchased them constantly. My Aunt's boyfriend use to service the juke boxes around town and I would purchase records from him @ a discount when ever he changed them. I still have a very nice collection of 45's, 33-1/3rd's (most in their original covers), as well as many 8 tracks.. All my 78's got ruined when my basement flooded several years ago. I still have the plastic and medal centers that goes in the 45's, and two record players to play them on [smiley=laugh.gif]. In the last ten years I've helped planned one and attended another by invite, parties where the guests wore poodle skirts, bell bottoms, Naru Suits, tennis shoes and bobbie socks and other clothing from back in the day; [smiley=shore.gif] and we only played 8 tracks and 45 records. Thanks for the memories.. Lady Luv |
