Title: English everyone ?
Post by cootie on Apr 24th, 2005, 7:03pm
Had sum people here today to look at pups & dogs(I run a small dog kennel here) and they were foreign....nice people......used up a good 1  1/2 hours of my time basically for a question and answer period I at times find annoying but it is obvious there interested in breeding in the future. So....they use me for a learning expirience and get as much info out as they can. Ok.....that's irritateing enuff but I handle'd it. But they'd look at dogs and pups and ask questions and suddenly break out into sum sort of fast talkin forgien GIBBERISH. Why did that piss me off so bad ?? USA english speaking bred Pam  :-/

When people do that around me, I always wonder if they're saying something they don't want me to hear. It could be that they're just more comfortable speaking their native language to each other...

Maybe I misread cooties post. I thought she said they were talking to her and then would talk gibberish. I figured that meant they talked to each other in gibberish. Which to my knowledge isn't an actual language.  :-/

Nice people? Sounds to me like they're some very rude axxholes that are taking you for an idiot.
If they want to buy dogs or pups then sell them some. At triple the normal price. In American cash only. And have them sign a statement stating they will never use your dogs for breeding. Hid the statement deep in receipt or any paper work that goes with dog selling.
Or have a couple of the dogs "fixed" and don't tell the gibberish speakers.

An alternative very flattering to all non-American posters to this board:

English / Giberish

But I'm a bit confused: Since Cootie doesn't write in English, does she write gibberish ?

Well my former landlady just loved it when me and my flatmate were talking Finnish. She told us that it was the most beautiful language she has ever heard... :)

I thought that was a nice thing thing to say.

In general, when I'm around people who don't understand Finnish, I don't speak that but the language we all can speak.  :)

Hey Ueli,

This site was created by an American, run by
an American, located in America and supported
in part by Americans.

I am sick and tired of your bad mouthing America and Americans.

Why don't you leave and find a CH site in your
country!

Yes, English is what I speak.
And I am damn proud to be an American!

I personally have had my fill of your anti-American bullshit!

Sometimes it's necessary for effective communication among those not well-versed in the native language. However, after a time this should be made clear. 5 minutes of this without some acknowledgment to others is impolite.

I wish I had learned another language though. I'm old enough to recall that some useful knowledge of French was very much encouraged here when I was in school. Today, for Americans, Spanish would seem the most useful.

Pam, I'm thinking that you're mostly angered by their rudeness and the fact that they used you and wasted your time, and no matter what culture someone comes from, there's never any excuse for rudeness.

My wife is Japanese and I am fluent in Japanese. A lot of times, when we're having a private conversation that we don't want others to overhear, we speak in Japanese. (Especially when we're discussing a high-dollar purchase in front of a high-pressure salesman, who won't give us the courtesy of leaving us alone to discuss things)

I guess I see both sides of it, but to reiterate: There's never an excuse for the kind of rudeness that these people showed you.

Being new immigrants, right off the boat in 1908, my grandparents spoke Italian within their families.  It did not get them far in school.  But for a long transition period both languages were spoken and now, when I've inquired with the elders, they are not sure they can even remember how to speak Italian anymore unless put again in that environment.  Fluent English for over the past 60 years.
Newer immigrants sometimes need the transition period because of older family values held within the home which doesn't encourage a better perfecting of their English skills, due to respect for elders within the family.  Some people wish to acclimate faster than others.
Charlie's right about the being impolite when being among the English speaking though.  It makes you feel like you're not even there.  I usually make sure they know I am still standing there. ;)

Yeah that's kind of what I was gettin at with this thread.....the people were nice and all......but on the phone beforehand they COULD of asked specific questions about the pup and dog I had available.....like nose color ! Instead of comeing all this way and bein here so long then decideing  they had 'learned enuff' and didn't want a pup or dog because of nose color ? They were basicaly out and about that day....and wanting to learn how to do kennel stuff......kind of like goin to the pet store to obseve the animals and never even buy anything. Those people are paid to sit in there and put up with window shoppers. But when they come out here and ask me questions about breeding ect ect then look at each other and do the gibberish language thing it sort of bother'd me. As if they were discussing the operation 'behind my back' type of feeling. But they were nice people don't get me wrong. I get alot of people that come to get a puppy fix and I don't always have what people want. But it's pisses me off when a few pre-questions on the phone could of saved me sum wasted time with them. Guess what I am saying is PEOPLE SUCK. Well not YOU guys.....not most of you at least. And I basically type the way most people talk (for the most part but not always I agree cuz I like to fuck around with my ABC's).......gotta live here in the USA to appreciate it Pam

Hey KOP,
A quote for you from the very first page of this site:

http://tinypic.com/4q554y

In no way does it exclude people of a certain race, religion, political creed, country of origin or whatever other distinction a fascist mind could think of.

You write: This site was created by an American, run by an American,.. So what? Nobody said there were no bright and well-meaning Americans.   ...  located in America ... A very important fact in the age of the world wide web!   ... and supported in part by Americans. Are you gonna reimburse the non-in-part-American supporters so you can kick them out? - All in all a very convincing introduction to your diatribe, isn't it?

I am sick and tired of your bad mouthing America and Americans.   If my little squib against a slightly xenophobic comment was such a horrendous "bad mouthing" to get you out of lurking, could you tell me what are the other instances my "bad mouthings"? KOP, have you been on crack, has your persecution mania become acute or is your paranoia running wild and lets you see phantoms around every corner? Or are you going to tell me that xenophobia is one of the cardinal virtues that are required for a good American like you?

I personally have had my fill of your anti-American bullshit!   So KOP is full of bullshit, in his own words, not mine. :P   Well, I suspected it for a long time....

Why don't you leave and find a CH site in your country!   Who the fuck do you think you are to barf up such recommendation? I'm sorry to tell you, you are alone with your spiteful opinion. Quite a few of the many nice Americans I got to know through this message board told me (by e-mails or PMs) that they enjoy my contributions and are glad I hang around here.

Yes, English is what I speak. And I am damn proud to be an American!   Everybody should love his Country, that's a good thing; and it can be done without daily flag waving. However, the inability to speak a foreign is rather to be deplored than to be proud of. It prevents you from getting acquainted with other cultures, but that is something a chauvinistic blockhead can't be bothered about.

KOP, just don't read my posts, otherwise you might blow your crown. Go back to lurking an spend more of your time on your preferred right-wing web sites.

Sigh.......nothin like a far fetched foreinger......wars are started with differences of opinions. And I never ment for anyone to take this thread to this level. Whenever there are disagreements or 'words said' people take sides and your army of darkness begins to form. I'm not gonna bash anyone........too much real pain here.......no reason to create more. I'm bigger then that Pam

I think I see both sides like Frank does, too.

I speak Spanish fluently.  We had a patient come into triage in the ER tonight who couldn't speak English.  We were having a really hard time figuring out what in heck she was even there for.

So then the Spanish side of my brain snapped into focus, and although I forget words like, "How much do you weigh?  What is your height?"  I could get the basic point across and get the info we needed from her.

I love to be able to speak languages.  I grew up speaking many different ones.

Lots of my friends make fun of me because I use words that are really not used in every-day-language much.  I have no rhyme or reason as to why except it probably comes from translating back and forth all the time.

But yes, I do agree that there are times when...if people speaking in another language blatently ignore you or you can tell they ARE, in fact, speaking about you (via nonverbal cues) - it can become very frustrating.

Hugz to you Pam.  I like yer English - and the unique way everyone "speaks" here. :)

Lizzie :)
