Just finished a good one:  Nelson DeMille Night Fall.  Guy can spin a good yarn :)

I rarely have the time during summer to read - prefer to be out in my gardens and tending to my rotten, but loved, ponds.

However, I read like a demon in the winter.  This past season I read every single one of Patricia Cornwall's "Kay Scarpetta" novels.  She spins a good yarn, and I love a strong woman character.  I also recently read a beautiful, touching novel called "The Lovely Bones."  Not by any means like the above, but highly recommended.

I don't have ANY time to read lately.  :(  I am looking forward to the next Harry Potter book...I know, I'm a loser.
Kris, if you liked The Lovely Bones....read Lucky. It's Alice Sebold's story of her recovery from a brutal rape. I am amazed at her ability to write about such dark things without dragging the reader through the mud.

Nani,

I keep meaning to buy it, but I've been somewhat reluctant.  Can't say why since I know it was her way of healing the wounds in a way.  You've convinced me, however.

The Lovely Bones was fantastic, really enjoyed it and I was quite reluctant at first. I actually read it on recommendation from someone here last time we talked about books. I've read loads lately and some I would really recommend are Twelve Bar Blues by Patrick Neate and if you like thrillers, The Genesis Code - John Case, The Athenian Murders - Jose Carlos Somoza, The Rule of Four - Ian Caldwell and Shadow of the Wind - Carlos Ruiz Zafon.. these are books I loved so much I won't lend them out for fear of not getting them back!
Oh and Nani and Patti.... You and me will be hitting a bookshop together on July the 16th! LOL Harry Potter is fantastic!

I haven't read any non-univerisity books in ages! I can't even recall what was the last... I hope I have time to do so this summer, although I have a dissertation (pro gradu) to work on...

Elaine...I loved The Five People You Meet in Heaven. It was a great read. Mitch Albom wrote another book Tuesdays With Morrie, that was also very good.

I get insurance offers from them every week. AAARP would be cool. Yes, I get AARP. Funny thing is that I never renewed the thing. Turns out that it's not bad.

I just bought the last two in the series, Thomas. I'm reluctant to start them because I don't want it to end. LOL

"The Da Vinci Code," is pretty good, but Dan Brown's, "Angels & Demons" is better, IMO.

Frank's right -  Angels and Demons is even better than The Da Vinci Code.  I look forward to more Dan Brown.

As for kid's books, I still have all my daughter's favorites in a box for my future grandchildren ... "The Mouse's Marriage", "Goodnight Moon", "The Runaway Bunny", and for anything great in terms of kids' poetry ... anything at all by Shell Silverstein."

Anyone else here a member of Audible.com??

I love it - cuz i commute to work an hour each way.
if anyone wants to join - and you use me = we both get a free book....   ;;D   name's WOOBIE .. of course.

Anyway - they give you a free MP3 player when you sign up for a year... and it's 19.99 a month and you get to pick any two books you want.  I always get the unabridged books... and I always get the books that are 30-60$ books... since they're free.

I listened to Dreamcatcher (Stephan King) and I LOVE LOVE LOVE the audio book version a bagillion times better than just reading it OR the movie.  The guy who narrates it is awesome!

I just  listened to this book called WISH YOU WELL by David Baldacci.    LOVED IT!

I like the audio books too - because I can do other stuff while I'm getting read to.    I can be driving, I can be doing dishes (as IF) and I could be out in the yard.... whatever.   I listen to it on my breaks at work....

LMAO - i'm recommending - not trying to sell... LMAO  (dont yell at me!)

anyway - I just order the book you recommended, Kim.  Hope it's good ....

Summer Reads?

Tried that once. Didn't like it. It's like broccoli, once is enough.

I'll stick to reading this thread about reading.

Except Jonny's posts. I understood it and that scares me.

Currently reading "The Dragonbone Chair" by Tad Williams, typical fantasy young geeky type boy comes of age, saves the world etc.  But a good cast of characters.

Tad Williams' "Otherland" books are really good, too.

Neal Stephenson's, "Snowcrash" was a fun book... Much in the same vein as William Gibson's, "Virtual Light."

Just barely started Dean Koontz's "Frankenstein" (I guess it's going to be a series) If you like thriller/suspense and havent read the "Bad Place" by Dean Koontz you need to!  I got hooked on Koontz with that book many years ago.

I also suggest James Patterson "When the Wind Blows" then "The Lake House" I read those two waiting for a new Stephen King or Koontz book to come out.

Pre Kids if I was into a book I will read it nonstop until it was done.  Some books were started in the morning and finished late that night, depending on how large the book was and what kind of style the book was.

What's Koontz's "Frankenstein" about? Anything like Mary Shelley's?

Odd Thomas was a really good one, read that a few months back.

As for Frankenstein it started out as a movie script, then I guess Koontz didn't like how it was turing out so he dropped the movie to write the book the way he wanted it written.

Here's the book summary.........
"If you think you know the story, you know half the truth...
He is called Deucalion, but he is the legend, feared as a monster for centuries, who now hides in the frightening shadows of our time, facing one final confrontation with the evil genius who created him: Dr. Frankenstein.
Deucalion arrives in New Orleans just as a serial killer stalks the streets, a killer who carefully selects his victims for the humanity that is missing in himself.
Detective Carson O'Connor is cool, cynical, and tough. Her partner would back her up all the way to Hell itself—which is where this case may end up. For the no-nonsense O'Connor is suddenly talking about an ages-old conspiracy, a near immortal race of beings, and killers that are more—and less—than human. And though she sounds crazy, the truth is more ominous. For O'Connor's quarry isn't merely a homicidal maniac but the product of Deucalion's deranged maker. "

Edited to add the link to Koontz's website http://www.randomhouse.com/bantamdell/koontz/
