Title: Re: New pope! Post by seasonalboomer on Apr 19th, 2005, 3:56pm Strange strategy picking a 78 year old arch conservative at a time when the church is in decline in the west, in a pitched battle in much of Africa and Asia, and only creating hoards of followers in Latin America with a strange brand of Catholicism that many of us would barely recognize. Maybe a choice by moderates to pick the "worst" conservative pope so that he can illustrate how bad the church can be --- realizing he is 78 and will only be around a short time and they can then pick up the pieces when he goes and as the church finally feels compelled to pick up the pieces of a church that will be nearly irrelevant at that time to most in the west. |
