Title: Clusters vs Migraines
Post by zrmulcahy on Apr 11th, 2005, 10:17pm
Would this be an accurate comparison of clusters to migraines?

A migraine is to a cluster as a thunderstorm is to a tornado.

Or would hurricane be more appropriate for the migraine?  Never having had a migraine, I await input from the clusterhead/migraineur crowd.
Just looking for a good comparison in response to the inevitable "oh yeah I got migraines when I was a kid..."

Hi Z...I use to have classic migraine (with aura) for many years before the beastie first called on me.  At the time, I used to think the migraines were pretty nasty.  But in retrospect, there is a big difference in how incapacitating each type is.  Over time, I was actually able to meditate away the migraines.  I have never been able to do that with clusters.  If you are looking for weather metaphors (especially with Madisonians) you might be comparing snow flurries to a good 'ol  ten inch blizzard followed by a Siberian express.  The truth is, that I would prefer childbirth (without drugs) to having a KIP 10 CH. :-/

My migraines are like a hailstorm...and my CH are definitely the Tsunami.

They both suck.

They both have me  beyond depressed tonight.

Well, that's beyond my experience...lol..but at least with childbirth, I would have enough sense to use drugs the next time (if there was a next time).  Wish I could have that much control over the CH.

Migraine?............ Walk in the park.

Cluster?........ Walk in a volcanic park that suddenly erupts spewing molten lava everywhere incinerating every living creature in its muderous path engulfing homeless people, squirrels and pigeons in life sucking flames and sending choking sulferic gases into the atmosphere blocking the sun and creating a nuclear winter that no living creature, man nor beast, could survive.

To much ya think??

Thanks Casey,

Yup I did need one!  Last night I finally got to sleep at about 6am or so.  Life's been shit lately, but I guess that's what happens when you're getting close to graduation.

My migraines are far more disabling than my CH, although the CH is more painful.  However, with CH, yes I lose sleep and I want to rip my head off (if I could)...I can still function pretty well during the day.  The constant migraine prevents that.  We're thinking that between the chronic daily migraine, chronic clusters and all the other complications, that I may be going on disability in the future.

I actually have a near religious conviction about NOT going on disability, but sometimes you can only do so much.  My plan (as I told my mom on the phone this morning) is to finish my BSN and then possibly my MSN.  Hopefully by then I'll be married to my wonderful boyfriend, and then as soon as I have kids...bam I'm becoming a stay at home mom/piano teacher.  (Gotta use my first degree for SUMthing)  That's how I'm going to avoid being on disability, but still not having a job where I have to be out of the home.  It's getting too much.

I may be more cynical right now because of school, but...this too shall pass!

Hugz back,
Carrie :)

LOL Frank,

It was the migraines being a walk in the park thing which I believe Ree was referring to!

I won't get into it...because you all know I come from different places on that issue, and I hate both migraine and CH.

Carrie :)

No point getting into it, really.
I will say this.
Clusters are a walk in the park. A 18mm hole in a brain blood vessel and resulting hemmorhage is a walk through a volcanic...blah blah blah.
Having had that doesn't make my CH any easier....it ALL sucks, thankyouverymuch.

I've never had a migraine, so I can't speak to the pain levels that people encounter with them. I do have a friend who gets them, and he barfs, rocks, and they incapacitate him for 48-72 hours at a time, so given the choice, I'd probably choose to have clusters.

On the other hand, migraine triggers seem to be more easily identified and preventatives and treatments seem to be a lot more effective than those for cluster headaches.

As for which is worse, I really don't know. (and hope I never find out!) Pain=Pain.  :'(

I agree with Cootie's description.  And also, Frank brings up a really good point.  Cluster and migraine are two totally different animals.  Migraine is a whole body kind of thing.  Vision disturbance (phosphenes, like looking through a heat wave but closing your eyes doesn't help because it's happening in your brain), extremity numbness, disorientation/confusion, photo- and phonosensitivity, nausea/vomiting, dire need to remain motionless and every shard of light causes pain.  The pain that results from a migraine attack is almost secondary to all the other physical shit that goes on.  At least you can sleep through that part of it (and you dp desparately want to, trust me).  This can go on for days at a time.  You can feel every hair on your head, eyebrows and eyelashes (they all seem to be independant of each other and seem to be causing pain).  It's very evil.

Cluster, in comparision from what I've seen with Mike, Linda H. and Elaine, is an urgent trip to Hell where you put your head (eye first) through a white-hot cheese grater for about an hour.  And then you lie in wait, terrified of your next summons.  :(

I'll take the migraine, thanks.

edited to put into words what poor broken-wristed-fellow-migrainer Ree was wanting to say. ;)

Or forget 48-72 hours and try....

4 years, 2 months, 27 days, 4 hours and 33 minutes.

Oh yes...I've loved every second of it, let me tell you!

My one wish would be to obliterate every single condition with the word "headache" attached to it.

I have just discover a creme called Pain-A-Trate marketed on the website www.melaleuca pharmacy.com. After my migraine returned from another of many a "cocktail" injections of demerol, phenergan and Toradol. A friend at work asked me to rub a little of this on my temples, About eight minutes after I rubbed the stuff on, mu migraine was gone!. I've tried it several days in a row and it works! I don't know that it's the end alll to my migraines, but I plan to keep plenty of it on hand. I don't sell it and I don't stand to gain anything by telling you about it but please, if you haven't  found any relieve yet, try this stuff. It's also good for other aches and pains too. It;s about 15.00 on their website.

I used to sell that it works alot like amway if anyone knows what that is ....  melaleuca is a oil from downunder and it has alot of supposed healing properties ... you can also get the straight extract oil, mix 1 drop with a tspoon of honey and it will help with the shadows but not a full blown ch. about 6 months of using it went 1 1/2 years without a ch. was really expensive 15 years ago when I was able to get it. I hadnt found anyone distrubiting since so ive been without. well at least now i know where to get it again. you guys may want to try, totally up to you.

Thanks bhatch. :)

Melaleuca is tea tree oil. The people who sell it would have you believe it cures everything. They have a MLM system for dealers (like Amway). If you want to try it for anything....don't buy the brand. Go to a place that sells essential oils and buy tea tree oil.
