I'll give him this:

Not matter what your beliefs, the guy was consistent. That's refreshing to me anyway.

Consistant? I think tenacious is a better description.

That man struck fear in the hearts of our less than peaceful global leaders.

The guy stuck to his guns.

The college of cardinals meet in conclave in the Sistine Chapel within 20 days after the death to ballot on a new Pope. After each ballot they, the ballots, are sewn together and burned. Special chemicles are used to produce white or black smoke. White smoke from the flue of the chapel indicates a new Pope has been chosen.

Any baptized Catholic male may be elected pope. Except Jonny.

And Pope John PaullII chose all but three of the Cardinals who will be in conclave. I think the number of Cardinals meeting is 117 and a 2/3 majority is needed for election.

I was baptized catholic, and I went through all the sacraments on the path that I was following...through confirmation.  I'm not married which comes next....nor am I dying (or never have been in imminent fear of death!), so I've never received last rites.

When I was younger, my future goal was to become a nun.  I'm not kidding...I have it in a time capsule that I made at a retreat when I was in 6th grade!  We were "required" to go to CCD until confirmation, which was in 6th grade in my church, but I continued to go until 9th grade.

I remember that the church was recruiting us young'uns to go to a pro-life march, and I had wanted to go just because it was through the church.  My mom told me at the time that she wouldn't allow me to go and that someday when I was old enough to understand and make the decision for myself, then I could choose to go or not, but she wouldn't let me go then.  I'm glad she didn't.

Over time, I left the church...then I'd go back...then sort of drift off again.  This was mostly during college at Penn State.  I attended a methodist church, and then with my choir I jumped around churches so much.

So there was one thing I was thinking about today (and why this rambling story has some sort of meaning...to me at least!)  I don't agree with many "stances" the catholic church takes.  I'm pro-choice; I think gay marriage is okay; I don't think being divorced sends you to the firey pit of hell; I'm for birth control, and on and on!  These are all decisions that I made for myself as I grew up and looked inward to find my true beliefs.

However, through all of that...I remained Catholic.  What strikes me as the greatest thing about Pope John Paul II was exactly what Don and a couple of others stated above.  He was extremely tenacious until the end about keeping the traditions of the church.  Of course, some views changed as very old traditions that did not make sense were eliminated once in awhile, but all in all, the Pope really stuck to the strong beliefs of the Catholic church.

I've always found great comfort that, despite how much this world changes every day, the church has been a place of strong structure and belief...it isn't going anywhere.

I'm sure some would disagree with what I wrote here, but that's one of the reasons I feel such great loss with the death of the Pope.  I haven't connected strongly with the Catholic church in some time, but for one, Pope John Paul II was the pope for my entire lifetime, and it is like the loss of something I've felt strength and comfort in for my entire life.

Does anyone remember Bishop Fulton Sheen?  I think it was a few years ago that he was canonized as a saint in the church.  He actually was a member of my family.  His brother was married to my great aunt.  I know when my parents got married, he offered to perform the ceremonies for the wedding, but (and he understood this), my parents declined because everyone was concerned that with such a high figure doing the ceremony, the focus would drift from the wedding to being at a ceremony with such a man as Bishop Sheen!

Anyways...I digress...  Whether or not I have ever agreed with the issues of the catholic church, today was a great loss.  Pope John Paul II was right up there with the greatest spiritual leaders that we've ever had in the history of this world.

Godspeed

LOL Randy....it's in my family, too.  My uncle is from Israel, and we have this whole part of my family from Israel who are Jewish...so you could say it's also been a big part of my cultural soup.  But I've been Catholic since birth...give or take a few pilgrimmages to check out other churches! ;-)

No possibility for women priests, Bishops or Cardinals
No to abortion under any circumatances
Inexcusbale coverup of priests wrongdoings

Tradition is good but change is inevitable.

Oh yeah. You can see him now and then...weekends, probably on the Catholic Channel. It's still called "Life Is Worth Living." Everybody watched him in the 50s scribble on his blackboard and get chalk all over this clothes. My kind of guy.

I still watch him when I find him.

I've seen two of them.

One in the Dominican Republic playing Tijuana Taxi and selling Coco Frio.

Proceeds going the the Boston Clergy Legal Defense Fund and a portion to "Neverland Ranch".

I am not catholic, but I respected this man a great deal.  He brought some great changes to the church.  He brought the catholic church closer to the Jews and other non-catholics.  A very great man.

But, the above being said, I can only hope that the new pope has a bigger set of 'nads, and brings the catholic church into modern times.  If they want to survive and prosper, drastic changes need to be made:
- Allow priests to marry
- Accept women into the priesthood
- Quit banning birth control
- Accept GLBT's (gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender)
- Take a MUCH stronger, and public stand AGAINST child molestation by priests and nuns

But the world has lost a great man, leader and peace maker.

Were they supposed to have submitted their resumes before attending the funeral, and received approval prior to attending? And while he was hailed a great peacemaker, there was very little decrease in the number of wars that occurred during his "watch" over the flock. I have respect for this man as a pope, but while he had great success in converting millions in the third world, his record in Europe and the West was one of a church in decline, where the cathedrals and church's in much of the West have become "museums" instead of places of active praise.

God Bless John Paul II and may he rest in peace, and may the church pick up and move on from this time in history with as many goals as they have ideals.

What need is there for churches and cathedrals, or even religion? If God is all-loving, and God is omniscient and omnipresent, then the WHOLE WORLD is a cathedral, and the very ground we each stand on is holy ground.

That said, I recognize that the Pope was a beloved spiritual leader to so many people the world over, and to those people who are grieving, I offer my sincere condolences and compassion.

Peace & Strength,
-Frank

Bill Maher, on his HBO show displayed a picture of some kind of meeting of religious leaders from most every fatih, all wearing funny hats. It was taken somewhere in the middle east. These guys hate everything about the other's beliefs and culture. There is only one thing these seven twerps agree on: They hate Gays.

Such thinking is bad for economy, nationalism, regionalism,  government, and the war effort in general. Grab a holy book in one hand, a flag in the other, and get with the program.

Say no to shrooms. Kudzu too, probably.
