Title: Hungry? Post by KingOfPain on Mar 24th, 2005, 7:17pm http://tinypic.com/2bzhq8 http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/local/states/california/northern_california/11221666.htm The Mercury News Posted on Thu, Mar. 24, 2005 Search continues for origin of finger found in fast food chili BRIAN SKOLOFF Associated Press Searching a fingerprint database typically used to solve crimes, authorities on Thursday hoped to find who lost a partial finger that was served in a bowl of chili at a Wendy's restaurant in San Jose earlier this week. A woman scooped up a mouthful of the steamy stew and bit down on the digit before spitting it out, Joy Alexiou, spokeswoman for the Santa Clara County Health Department, said Thursday. Alexiou said the county coroner was attempting to find a fingerprint match in an electronic database. Employees at the Wendy's were asked to show investigators their fingers after the Tuesday night incident. All employees' digits were accounted for, officials said, adding that the well-cooked finger may have begun its journey in a food processing plant. Wendy's spokesman Denny Lynch said company officials met Thursday with authorities in San Jose to discuss the results of their internal investigation. "All of our employees have 10 digits," Lynch said, adding that there have been "no finger-related" accidents reported to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration from any supplier of chili ingredients to Wendy's. "By law, you can't hide that sort of stuff," he said. "All of our chili suppliers report no accidents. "We have found nothing to support the allegations that we are the source" of the finger, Lynch added, noting that health officials will eventually discover where the digit originated. "They'll be able to tell, as gross as it sounds, if it was from a cadaver or not, for example," Lynch said. "We want to find the truth." Health officials said the fingertip was approximately an inch-and-a-half long. They believe it belongs to a woman because of the long, manicured nail. The county's health department, sheriff's department and the Santa Clara County Environmental Health Department were working on the case Thursday. Alexiou said the woman, who asked officials not to identify her, is at minimal risk of contracting illnesses from the finger. "It's an extremely low chance because the chili was cooked at a very high temperature that would have killed anything in the finger," Alexiou said. Nonetheless, she said health department officials would ask the woman's doctor to test her blood "to make sure nothing got passed to her." "She was so emotionally upset once she found out what it was," Alexiou said. "She was vomiting." The Wendy's restaurant was closed for a few hours Tuesday while investigators seized the remaining chili and its ingredients. Asked whether customers were still buying chili Thursday, an employee at the Wendy's said only, "We always sell a lot of chili." ======================================= Other sources: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/03/24/national/main682925.shtml http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A61608-2005Mar23.html |

Title: Re: Hungry? Post by BikerBob on Mar 24th, 2005, 11:05pm I suspect that it's all a scam... She knows someone who works at a mortuary who got the finger from a cadaver. She cooked the finger at home before bringing it to Wendy's where she put it in the chili. She will now sue Wendy's and split the settlement with the person who works at the mortuary. Title: Re: Hungry? Post by catlind on Mar 25th, 2005, 1:05am I used to work in a food processing plant. Lots of nasty stories to tell, none with fingers though. Of course, the worst part was making the vegetable cocktail (no it wasn't V-8 ) and the veggies were trucked in fresh off the field. Either side of the conveyor belt, alternately spaced, were 8 people with very sharp meat clevers chopping the veggies. Of course the dirt from the field came with the veggies, as did the frogs, snakes and mice. If you were to try to remove one of the 'pests' there would end up being a lot of fingers in the veggie cocktail. They could get away with this because it was cooked at such a high temperature there was no chance of any bacteria being spread - that was when the labels used to say "and other additives". Glad they changed the law to make every ingredient listed. Oh and now machines do the chopping, they just have inspectors at the conveyor belt entrance pulling out frogs, snakes and mice. The things you learn to never eat again when you work in a food processing plant...... Cat |
