Title: Racist Pig Post by don on Mar 17th, 2005, 8:08am I have been named as a defendant in a Boston Fair Housing Commission complaint alleging descrimination. Apparantly one of the households in our portfolio feels they could not celebrate Three Kings Day as they would have wanted to and its partially my fault. I descriminate against Hispanics. WTF is Three Kings Day? (dont answer I looked it up) Only in America! |

Title: Re: Racist Pig Post by nani on Mar 17th, 2005, 11:50am Racism and prejudice is everywhere.... Institutional racism is especially prevelant. We often don't even realize how much. From www.tolerance.org: Some bigotry is so entrenched in American language we don't even know when we're using it. "Paddy wagon" is one such term. Even Webster's defines the term — "an enclosed motortruck used by police to carry prisoners" — without mention of its derogatory etymology. But look up "Paddy," just one line above, and the problem becomes clear: "Irishman — often taken to be offensive." "Paddy" is derived from the stereotypical notion that all Irish males were named Patrick — or Padraig in the Irish language, hence "Paddy." "All About Irish," an online cultural resource, explains Irish immigrants in the 19th century were "at the bottom of the social hierarchy" and found themselves stereotypically characterized as drunken miscreants. "Paddy" then was combined with "wagon" in the 1920s — some sources date it earlier, others a bit later — to describe police vans that allegedly picked up so many "Paddies." Similar references reach into the mid-20th century, and the word remains in use today, appearing in the media and casual conversation. The Boston Globe, for example, has apologized for inadvertently using the term: "The Globe has tried for years to eliminate it, routinely inserting 'patrol wagon' instead," wrote Ombudsman Christine Chinlund in 2004. Tolerance.org shares this dilemma; despite our best efforts, the term "paddy wagon" appears sporadically in some of our materials as well, usually in quoted materials. Some sources attribute the name to the number of Irish police offices in Boston, New York and other cities. Others say the term refers to padding found inside the patrol vans. Both of these diminish or ignore the inherent bigotry of the term "Paddy." The Ancient Order of Hibernians of America is unequivocal in its assessment of the term: "... the Irishman's disorderly conduct was always thought to be the result of inebriety (and) the derisive term 'paddy' wagon originated in this environment." |

LMAO...this reminded me (in a positive way) of this HILARIOUS story I had from when I worked in the ER. This young girl (I won't state her race, but yes...she would play the race card right and left) came in with a major chip on her shoulder and definitley did not want to deal with ME. She was asking for test results, and after I provided the documents she was looking for, she asked to speak to my supervisor... But before that we had some interesting interactions! To give her the results, I have to have her produce ID. So I asked if she had her license. She said, "This is America. Of course I have my license. You can't go anywhere without a license. People who don't carry their ID are irresponsible." I said, "Ok thanks. I just need to see it quickly before I print out your papers." Then...she sees this Chinese registration form on my desk. Well, we live about 2 blocks from Chinatown, and it does help to register people who speak Chinese when you have a form in Chinese. She flipped over that with this whole, "This is America. We shouldn't cater to them. If we went to China, would they have forms in English to accomodate us?" I looked her in the face with a blank look...completely emotionless and said, "Yes. In fact they would." She kept on yelling and screaming. Finally I just got my supervisor and let her deal with the problem. Although English and Spanish are my only two languages anymore, I grew up also learning French, Hebrew, and sign language..to name a few others! I love learning new languages though...and I don't really feel put-off by having to accomodate to language barriers...but this girl was on a roll... I have the feeling that she would have tried that argument on a brick wall...had she had the opportunity. :) L2 :) |

I was working in the nursery a few weekends ago. While I was there, I had a patient...and now I don't even know how to describe her diagnosis! In medical terms in psychiatry, pediatrics, etc...we've always documented that a patient is MR to stand for mentally retarded. I simply asked the nursery nurse if the mother of the new baby was MR. The nurse (although she was in complete agreement about the rediculous-ness of having to change to wording) said to me...actually saying "MR" isn't correct anymore. Now we have to document "Mentally Challenged." Now it couldn't have been a less derogative or prejudicial setting than how I said that. I had some concerns over the cognitive ability of the mother to care for her baby, and I wasn't aware of the mother's exact psychiatric/medical diagnosis. When I went into her room, she was holding the baby...but not supporting the head. The baby was dressed in soiled clothes and blankets that were covered with regurgitated formula, and the diaper hadn't been changed for some time. The mother was trying to move from sitting on the side of the bed to lying back in bed...all the while holding the baby in a rather compromising position! So...all in all, I had reason for concern...but apparently that terminology is "out." oy.... |

Title: Re: Racist Pig Post by BarbaraD on Mar 19th, 2005, 10:46am I'm with Nani -- speak English - it's "supposed" to be OUR language here in America. My gosh, I just figured it out -- we can take off about 4 days a week for some sort of ethnic holiday. What ever happened to just celebrating AMERICAN holidays.... Stick to the noise issue Don -- I hear it's a biggie right now. At least that's what they tell me about my parties.... I'm IRISH an I've never worried about paddy-wagons being an ethnic slur. Give me a break..... People need to get a life! Hugs BD |
