Title: Surgery on Wed 3/16
Post by Renee on Mar 12th, 2005, 3:56pm
After 3 weeks of being flat on my back and getting no help from epidural steroid injections, I saw a neurosurgeon on Thursday.

Yesterday I had an EMG, flexion/extension xrays and a CT Myelogram (not fun at all).  The neurosurgeon called last night and I'm scheduled for surgery this coming Wednesday.

Plans are to perform a laminotomy, foraminotomy and removal of bone spurs at the c5/6 and c7 and partial discectomies of each.  I also have herniations of the c3/4 and c4/5 but they are not bothersome.  If anything, he will remove the bone spurs only from those areas.

There is a post on the medical board about sympathetic nerve blocks being helpful for ch.  I wonder what opening up the nerve path and decompressing the sympathetic nerve might do for my ch's?  I am being very optimistic that I may get some ch relief with this surgery as well, but we shall see.

So, I won't be around for a few days starting Wednesday and then once I'm back at home I don't know if I'll be online or not for a bit.

Dr. Williams is the neurosurgeon.  He is a good neurosurgeon as he used to be the neurosurgeon for the Dallas Cowboys many years ago.

Prayers for his skilled hands, clear head and wisdom will be appreciated for Wednesday.
Renee

Wishing you lots of good luck and steady hands for your sturgeon.   ;;D

Wednesday is a good day to have things done.  Fully recovered from the last weekend and not distracted looking forward to next weekend yet.

Monday - people are hung over or bummed about going back to work.

Tuesday - better but still trying to get into gear.

Thursday - daydreaming about and looking forward to the weekend.

Friday - forget it!  Nothing but partying on the mind.

I'm OK right now, just tired of being flat on my back and on the duragesic patch.  It has gone from taking 25mcg every 3 days to now needing 50mcg every 2 days.

Does anyone know if they will allow the duragesic patch for post-surgery pain control?

I'm SO ready for this and yes, should make trout fishing possible by this summer!   ;;D   Priorities!!!   [smiley=laugh.gif]

Sis, they will probably keep you on the patch after surgery then detox you down on it..but they wont be using it for post surgery pain...only because you have been on it for awhile now and they want to avoid withdrawals from it after surgery.  They will probably use something else that works faster as a PCA pump for the first few days.along with the patch.....atleast that is what we do at the medical center here....God bless, smiles, nancyc

Renee,

I am wishing you the best of luck...although I only know you from a few scribbles on this board...I can tell you're a very giving person and one who is deserving a break from this pain.

The pain immediatley after the surgery is not painful...however...it will get painful after the bones and nerves heal...so get on one of your Doctor's A$$ and get some pain control. They will probably let you keep the patch on, through surgery...and then should give you something on top of it for the post-surgery.

I haven't been checking the board as much...lately. But if you need anything PM or E-mail me. Thanks for keeping a check on me while I went through my surgery and you can be damned sure I will be making sure you make it through this surgery in great shape & high spirits.

Let us know how it went...as soon as you're able.

Jimmy

Gets painful after the nerves and bone heal?

Don't tell me that!   ;)

Out the door shortly.  I'm scheduled first for surgery this morning.

I was told I'd have to take the patch off prior to surgery and would spend tonight in ICU.  Will be home hopefully in a couple of days.

hugs to all,
Renee

p.s.  Nani or BarbD will post an update later today for the family.  I'm ready but shaking in my boots.

You'll do just fine.  Of course by the time you see this, it will all be over.  Anxiously awaiting the positive report of a successful surgery.

Renee showed up early for her surgery today, only to find out that Anesthesiology screwed up. Her surgery has been rescheduled for early Friday morning.  >:(

rescheduled?

That totally sucks. Just drag out the waiting a little longer why don't they?

Can't the medical profession ever get anything right?
Don't they ever talk to each other?

Thinking of you Renee.  ;)
