With surprising and mysterious regularity, life on Earth has flourished and vanished in cycles of mass extinction every 62 million years, say two UC Berkeley scientists who discovered the pattern after a painstaking computer study of fossil records going back for more than 500 million years.

I already knew that....and I didn't need a "team" of geniuses to figure it out either....where the hell have they been, and what else have they been up to?

The last major natural "purge" was the ice age, destroyed almost everything but Human beings, and we have the GALL to think that we are going to survive the universes NEXT catastrophe....doubtfull until "star trek" type technology exists in reality. We aren't anywhere NEAR THAT advanced.
So go buy a hummer and live a little, only about 12000 years till mother nature says " OK People...In this scene EVERYBODY dies, ACTION!"

Well, if that is true then we're about 3 million years overdue for a mass extinction event. The last one happened with the dinosaurs about 65 million years ago.

There's no inevitability as long as there is a willingness to comptemplate which is happening now.

It's been implied that mammals don't have to be smarter to survive. They just have to adapt, which may entail becoming stupider if that is adaptive. Explains a lot about me reaching 50. Diversity rules.

The guys who wrote that are physicists, a remarkably respectable profession but presenting a mathmatically oriented proposition not privy to the detailed workings to the why or how of possibly resetting our clocks.
