Title: Earth comes with a Ctrl-Alt-Delete function Post by Hirvimaki on Mar 10th, 2005, 6:55pm Mass extinction comes every 62 million years, UC physicists discover David Perlman, Chronicle Science Editor Thursday, March 10, 2005 With surprising and mysterious regularity, life on Earth has flourished and vanished in cycles of mass extinction every 62 million years, say two UC Berkeley scientists who discovered the pattern after a painstaking computer study of fossil records going back for more than 500 million years. ((OR maybe Xenu is just hitting Ctrl-Alt-Delete... Damn clams!) ((But we all really know it's the 32-bit signed integer overflowing... Who new life on earth was written for Win95..? At least I know the computer geeks will chuckle...)) Hirvimaki-Isi |

Title: Re: Earth comes with a Ctrl-Alt-Delete function Post by Cerberus on Mar 10th, 2005, 7:16pm I already knew that....and I didn't need a "team" of geniuses to figure it out either....where the hell have they been, and what else have they been up to? The last major natural "purge" was the ice age, destroyed almost everything but Human beings, and we have the GALL to think that we are going to survive the universes NEXT catastrophe....doubtfull until "star trek" type technology exists in reality. We aren't anywhere NEAR THAT advanced. So go buy a hummer and live a little, only about 12000 years till mother nature says " OK People...In this scene EVERYBODY dies, ACTION!" anyone figure out cold fusion yet? Ramon |

[smiley=laugh.gif] (Although I think it's funny and quite fitting that a Hummer truly IS a $60,000 blowjob! LOL!) 8) :o [smiley=laugh.gif] |

Well, if that is true then we're about 3 million years overdue for a mass extinction event. The last one happened with the dinosaurs about 65 million years ago. Y'all just bend over and kiss your a$sses goodbye now! |

It's the "about" 65 million years that's bugging me, man. Do we have a half million years, or 10 minutes. That's a wide fucking spread. Wanted to cop a root tonight, and would appreciate knowing if I should hurry up. Praise Wotan, RJ |

Rough calculations predict the astroid collision method within the next few hundred million years. There's no inevitability as long as there is a willingness to comptemplate which is happening now. It's been implied that mammals don't have to be smarter to survive. They just have to adapt, which may entail becoming stupider if that is adaptive. Explains a lot about me reaching 50. The Kuiper Belt (Dutch-American contempary of Dutch astronomer Jan Oort, George Kuiper) of astroids, stream a swath of real estate beginning just beyond Neptune's orbit and extends several orbit lengths beyond. With no massive planet to perturb them, most in the belt maintain their orbit for billions of years. Our own interplanetary astroid belt is a subset of the Kuiper, a long term cosmic threat only. Any, more than a mile across could destablize Earth's ecosystem with risk of extinction but hard to find one that size there. If perturbed from their large orbits, Kuiper Belters can occasionally plunge into the inner solar system crossing planetary paths with abandon. Halley's is one. The Oort Cloud are high period comets above the plane of the solar system and can rain down from any angle or direction and most likely going to be attracted to the gravity of the much larger outer planets. In 1996, Hyakutake came from the Oort cloud and crashed into Jupiter, but their usual orbits extend half way to the next closest star, though they number in the trillions. The gravity of the much larger outer planets protect us to a large extent. The guys who wrote that are physicists, a remarkably respectable profession but presenting a mathmatically oriented proposition not privy to the detailed workings to the why or how of possibly resetting our clocks.
