Title: OK...what do I do now? (NOT CH) Post by Donna_D. on Mar 10th, 2005, 6:19pm My four year old daughter has a tooth that: 1. Has a deep cavity requiring extraction or root canal and crown. 2. Is abcessed. The dentist whom I have been using says there is no need for antibiotics and that the tooth needs to be extracted. He is the same doc who just did dental surgery on my son and I "thought" I had a lot of trust in him. He is going to charge me 50 bucks for the whole procedure. I called another dentist who specializes in kids who says under no circumstances should the tooth be pulled without her receiving antibiotics first...(this is what I was thinking as well). He wants to do a root canal and crown (cap) on her #2 Molar. I have never seen this dentist and know nothing about him...he wants to charge me 400 bucks for all this. Could someone who has a copy of the "What to do when you are a Parent" manual please read the chapter on dentistry and give me a clue here?!? I seem to have lost my copy... Seriously, anyone have any insight? Price is NOT a deciding factor...I just want what is best for my kiddo. DD |

Title: Re: OK...what do I do now? (NOT CH) Post by broomhilda on Mar 10th, 2005, 6:43pm K, well first big hugs, I so know what you are going through, got the same things with Jonahs teeth and it pulls my heart and I still don't know what to do... He needs cavities filled and extractions to avoid, they say, over crowding and need for braces, well I have my doubts, they want to put him under and remove 8 teeth and fill the cavities...hate to say it but I will pay for the braces down the road in order to avoid undue pain for him right now... I would for sure go treat it with antibiotics first thats my gut too...ask another dnetist may be? Hope this helps just to know you are not alone on this Donna, hope more feedback will be on its way... Hugs on over! edit to add Jonny's right, my moms dentist would not pull until infection was gone... |

Title: Re: OK...what do I do now? (NOT CH) Post by Langa on Mar 10th, 2005, 6:48pm DD, spoke to my sister who is a dental hygienist. She's worked with a few dentists and periodontists....according to her, your kid should not have the abcessed tooth pulled without antibiotics first... Langa |

Title: Re: OK...what do I do now? (NOT CH) Post by Bec on Mar 10th, 2005, 6:52pm DD, Tried to call and talk to you about what is going on, but wanted me to enter your mail box # to leave a message. If at all possible don't have the tooth extracted. That tooth will be with her till she is about 12. IMHO she should have antibiotics , you don't want them to spread the infection thru her body." Novacaine" will not always work when there is a abscess. If it is causing her pain or she has a swelling, she should be on them now.I agree with the pedodontist, that if you can swing it have the RCT done and the crown. One of the problems. with removing a second molar is that you can not put in a space maintainer to hold the space for the permanent tooth. I hope that helps some. I will try and call you later or call if you have any questions I will be happy to help in anyway I can. hugs and PF wishes bec |

Title: Re: OK...what do I do now? (NOT CH) Post by LeLimey on Mar 10th, 2005, 7:09pm Along with EVERYONE else I can only reiterate you need antibiotics. If they pull the tooth the infection can spread and make an unholy mess. Time for a new dentist by the looks if it! |

Title: Re: OK...what do I do now? (NOT CH) Post by nani on Mar 10th, 2005, 8:27pm Bummer, DD. My 11 yo had that happen twice. The first time (at about 4 also) we opted for antibiotics and having it pulled. We added a spacer, like Bec mentioned and it probably broke 6 times. A real pain.... The second time, we went the antibiotic and root canal route. Worked much better. I found the best way to deal with their (and my) fear is to "practice". Pretend you're the dentist and walk them through it. When they finally get there, they're less anxious. |

Title: Re: OK...what do I do now? (NOT CH) Post by Kris_in_SJ on Mar 10th, 2005, 8:46pm Wow ... how awful for you and your little one! Antibiotics are a must before extraction! And, the fact is it's a baby tooth that she's eventually going to lose anyway, so paying for a crown seems absolutely ridiculous. I'd probably go for the extraction and frequently broken spacers before the cost of a crown. But that's just me .... I'm truly sorry for what you're going through. Nothing hurts more than watching our children hurt. For some reason, I thought our kids' teeth were protected by all the flouride they added to drinking water these days. Am I misinformed somehow? Title: Re: OK...what do I do now? (NOT CH) Post by cootie on Mar 10th, 2005, 10:01pm Most will require antibiotics at least 5 days to a week prior to an abstraction when there is an infection.....believe it or not the pain will let up as the infection and pressure goes down. But I have had teeth pulled that I know should not of been at the time cuz of infection.....I went IN with a very bad toothache.....and I wanted it OUT. Have had trouble with dry sockets too......maybe that was the reason.....I dunno.....but it was extremely painful......even got to me so bad it made me sick. Infection does not aid in healin......and no clot was forming like it should. So to save alot of pain and trouble I think I'd go with anitiotics first....at least fer say 5 days or more if ya can. But all in all I got over it......can't even say in sum cases it wasn't INSTANT relief gettin it out rite then and there. Far as a cap and root canal......after a root canal the tooth seems to get more britle and fall apart within time and discolor cuz the nerve was killed and ripped out. The procedure HURTS like hell on a front tooth......it still hurts. Don't know HOW the heck they get a kid to tolerate it unless they knock em out ? A root canal here is $ 600.00.......Brad jus had one done.......had the tooth capped.....grand total was $ 1,400.00 ! WTF !!!??? They wanted 14 thousand total to cap and fix about 6 teeth.......he got any cavities filled needed and said SEE YA !! Where have all the good prices gone Pam |

You go, Ree. Bugger Lent. Yank the tooth. The next one is the one that counts. This is just a practice run. Save your money for braces, therapy and college........as long as the kid can chew. Costly little buggers, eh? RJ |
