Title: I am a lucky man
Post by fubar on Feb 28th, 2005, 6:06pm
I have enjoyed the friendship of love of a great person over the last 12 years.  She has been my closest and dearest friend and one of my biggest supporters through some difficult times.  I have been there with her to bury her mother, her sister and finally her brother, all of whom died as a result of a nasty disease called IPF (Inherited Pulmonary Fibrosis).  These trying times helped us forge a bond like I have not experienced with many people on this Earth.  Sandy, who also had IPF, had a miraculous lung transplant in December 2002, about 2 years and 2 months ago.  Most (about 80%) lung transplant patients do not survive more than 1 year, so I feel lucky to have had her this long.  It is with a heavy heart and great sense of loss that I must say goodbye, but I know she is not suffering anymore and I will see her again someday.  I will miss our daily phone calls.  I will miss the challenge of trying to make her laugh once a day. I will miss the support she offered me, even as she sat there dying in front of me.  I love you, Sandy.

Goodbye.

Shawn - sorry to hear about your friend Sandy.  I'm happy that you had the experience of such a great friendship.

I had the pleasure of meeting your friend Sandy - she had the lung transplant and was a patient at Stanford Hospital when you and I went to visit DJ after his moya-moya surgery.  I was glad you shared the visit with me...

Sending you love and good energy my friend.

Chris

Thank you, everyone, for the kind words.  I remember seeing DJ at Stanford the same day I was visiting Sandy in ICU.  It was neat to be able to introduce her to other clusterheads.  To think that was only 26 months ago... wow.  Time is flying by...

I know she lasted this long due in part to all of your collective well-wishing and prayers.  For that I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart.  Every day was appreciated.

-Shawn

I wish Sandy fair winds and following seas. She has a full spinaker and a perpetual sunset before her.
You have the memory or her sunrise.
Be well.

Shawn, just the way you titled this post shows you're handling this with your usual class and grace.  Sandy will be proud of you.  I remember when she got that lung transplant and I'm so happy to hear that it did extend her life.  She has wings now and she's at peace.
My heart aches for your loss, friend.  Know that we all stand with you in your grief.
Peace and God be with you.

Thank you so much for telling this. I admire your attitude. Losing a loved one hurts deeply, I know that. I have been lucky to be able to keep all my friends with me, so I can only imagine what it feels like to lose one for good. I wish you strength. But I also have the feeling that some one who has been so important person in your life will continue to have impact in your life even now when she's gone.

best wishes,
Sandie

She is with you whenever you need.  listen to nature and you will still hear her voice.  feel the sun and wind and you will still feel her embrace.

Blessed be, my friend

Count your garden by the flowers, never by the leaves that fall.
Count your days by golden hours, don't remember clouds at all.
Count your life by smiles, not tears,
and with joy throughout your lifetime,
Count your age by friends, not years.

A poem which struck my heart many years ago, and comes easily and quickly to mind when I read your post.
God Bless.

Shawn,

When I read your post it reminded me of something my grandaddy used to tell my grandmother right before he passed away....

That he would wait for her, just beyond the moon.

Here are the lyrics and while this may not have been your wife, Sandy may have very well been your soulmate....

Don't cry...because she, too, is waiting...just beyond the moon.

Just Beyond The Moon
Recorded by Tex Ritter, 1967
Submitted by Thomas Rivers.

I’LL WALK JUST BEYOND THE MOON THEN I’LL STOP AND WAIT FOR YOU

(RECITATION)
MY MOTHER AND MY FATHER WERE IN LOVE FOR 50 YEARS
SO WHEN DAD DIED WE WONDERED WHY MY MOTHER SHED NO TEARS
WE ASKED HER ONCE ABOUT IT BUT SHE WOULDN’T TELL US WHY
INSTEAD SHE’D WALK OUTSIDE EACH NIGHT AND SMILE UP AT THE SKY
THEN JUST BEFORE SHE LEFT US SHE CALLED US TO HER SIDE…
SHE TOLD US WHAT MY FATHER SAID TO HER JUST BEFORE HE DIED

I REMEMBER WHEN YOU SAID YOU’D NEVER LEAVE ME
THROUGH THESE GOLDEN YEARS I’VE KEPT THE SAME VOW TOO
BUT NOW THAT I AM GOING PLEASE DON’T LEAVE ME
I’LL WALK JUST BEYOND THE MOON THEN I’LL STOP AND WAIT FOR YOU

(Chorus 1)
YOU CAN LOOK UP EVERY NIGHT AND YOU’LL SEE ME LIGHT THE LIGHT
WHERE I’LL WATCH FOR YOU TO JOIN ME SOMEDAY SOON
WE’LL GO LOOKIN THROUGH THE STARS FOR THE HEAVEN THAT IS OURS
AND I KNOW WE’LL FIND IT SOON SOMEWHERE JUST BEYOND THE MOON

I’LL WALK JUST BEYOND THE MOON THEN I’LL STOP AND WAIT FOR YOU

(Chorus 2)
I’LL JUST SIT THERE BY A STAR AND I’LL WATCH YOU FROM AFAR
TIL I SEE YOU WALKING TOWARD ME SOMEDAY SOON
THEN TOGETHER HAND IN HAND WE’LL FIND OUR PROMISED LAND
AND WE’LL SETTLE DOWN FOREVER DARLIN’ JUST BEYOND THE MOON

(Tag) I’LL WALK JUST BEYOND THE MOON THEN I’LL STOP AND WAIT FOR YOU
