Title: A piece of Pi
Post by Frank_W on Feb 24th, 2005, 7:33am
I sat down and watched the movie, "Pi" last night... What an amazing, brilliant movie!

Directed by Darren Aronofsky, he also did a movie called Requiem for a Dream, equally if not more brilliant movie but watch only if you want to be thoroughly depressed.

Yes me too, think I'll try it, all you have to do it seems, is drill a hole in your head where the pain is centralized and you will be cured!  ;)

You don't even want to know just how close I've truly come to digging my own eyeball out.  :(

I thought pi was infinite....

Don't dig out the eyes Frank. It won't help.[smiley=pokeeye.gif]

Get to the piano to get your mind off of the screaming head.

PFDAN to you.

And it cannot be expressed as a ratio of two numbers, that makes it irrational, too.

I guess its false advertising - only a slice of pi.

er.... The end of the movie! Interestingly enough, I was shadowing last night, and shadowed again for a couple of hours, this morning. Fortunately, neither of them amounted to anything more than a Kip 2.

PFDAN's, bro'

i think you mean evaluated maybe?   Don't want the universe to turn into a square.  ;)

This sounds like a good movie for tonight,  or maybe _What Dreams May Come_ again, I love that movie.

I thought pi was infinite....

It's transcendental, too...

I was in an engineering meeting and someone said, "Pi R squared."

Some goofball piped up, "No!! Pie are ROUND!!"

[smiley=laugh.gif] It was awhile before anyone got back to the calculations at hand. LOL

Just in case any math student is reading this thread, LOL:

An infinite number is larger than any arbitrarily large value you care to name.
-  pi has a limited value, 3.141591 < pi < 3.041592, and therefore it is finite.

An irrational number is not expressible as the quotient of two integers.

An transcendental number is any irrational number that is not an algebraic number (not expressable by a finite string of rational numbers and elementary operators). Or in other words, is not the root of a polynomial with integer coefficients.

pi is a transcendental number (and that includes it is also irrational).

Ok, I am no math whiz, and am not in a position to question you.  However, I was just wondering.  Wouldn't it make more sense if:

< 3.041592,

were 3.141592

because how can pi be greater than a number, and at the same time less than a number that is less than a number it is greater than?

Or am I crazy?
