Title: ?'s for the asthmatics
Post by juvy on Feb 22nd, 2005, 6:14pm
Okay first i'm going to do an internet search for Asthma support groups later...too upset to do it now, but if any of you know a good site, let me know.

but for those of you who have asthma, i have a few ?s

If you've had one...what is your normal lung function %?

How do you judge when it's time to break down and go to the ER?

for those of you with out asthma but offended that i asked this here... [smiley=finger.gif] some of you are family and i have a right to ask my family any thing i damn well please.

Hey, if Don can get helpful hints on how to repair his  blow up girlfriends, I do not think a few questions on asthma are going to ruffle anyones feathers.

I hope you find the answers you need...

HUGS!!

Hiya Girl,

My normal lung function as far as the test where you have to keep on blowing into the electronic monitor until you feel like you are going to die...was about 50%!  I forget my score on the Peak Flow Meter...maybe anywhere from 400's to 600's?  I don't remember!!

I'm actually not treated for asthma right now at all.  Sometimes I still need my MaxAir inhaler...especially if I go out in the cold or do any physical activity, but I rarely use it.  I was put on MaxAir and Advair when I first was diagnosed with Asthma.

I think mine was more allergy related than anything.  Only time will tell, and I hope that I don't have to go back for any more treatment at all!!

Oh...as far as the ER thing, I have no idea.  I went to the student health clinic once when I couldn't get good air and kept on coughing.  I actually had a pulse-ox (thing they put on your finger to measure blood oxygen) of 100%, but because I was having some trouble breathing, they gave me a nebulizer treatment.  It helped a WHOLE lot but then made me extremely hyper!!

Ask your doctor if they can give you a level on the peak flow meter that would require emergency treatment.  Otherwise, I think it is best to go when your normal medications you have at home are not cutting it and you can't get the attack under control.  Do you have a nebulizer at home?  If you have frequent exacerbations of asthma, I'd recommend asking the doctor to order one for you!

Hugz,
Lizzie2/Carrie :)

Thanks Donna and Jonny.

For those of you pming me...thank you very much.

for those of you reading this later and have asthma...let me answer a few questions already asked.

I'm not new to Asthma.  i've had it since i was 8.  I'm now 26.  It's gotten worse since the battle with pneumonia in december.  My lung function is low and the Drs are concerned because they're not seeing any marked improvement.  Before it was just a nusuance, now it's more of a concern then the CPH.  I'm tired most of the time, my lungs range from cramping to pain to just sore.

Frankly i'm just tired and frustrated from fighting to breath most of the time.  And of course i'm stubborn and refuse to "rest" aka stay in bed all the time.

Lung function in early December (with pneumonia):  60%
Lung function 22-Feb (Healthy supposedly): 70%
Pulse ox is at around 93%.
Ventolin for attacks
Seretide for preventative

Thanks for helping...
April

Lizzie,

that's a low lung function test! but  good description of the damn thing.

they don't allow home use of nebulizers here. and those treatments throw you for a loop.

I don't have a peak flow meter any more.  didn't think i needed.  I'll ask the lung specialist for one on monday.

I use Advair, 2 puffs a day, and it keeps the epi-pen away.  If things get bad, I add in a nebulizer treatment.  I have seasonal asthma but use the Advair year round.

Not much help here but I can sympathize!

I don't have a peak flow meter either...I just use one when I have to at the doc.  In fact, I have nothing to treat the asthma symtpoms anymore!  My lung sounds are clear, but I am constantly out of breath and I have a horrid morning cough.  They told me that the morning cough is due to allergies and the feelings of shortness of breath are just due to having a smaller lung volume than most.

How they know that is beyond my medical knowledge!

You can turn an O2 tank into a home nebulizer....I'd fill you in the details, but you need a neb medication like liquid albuterol to make it really work.  But it's pretty easy!  (You didn't hear that from me! ;)  )

I did a search on Google and it showed that there are around 14,500,000 listings for asthma.
Here's one to get you going.

www.aaaai.org/ - 15k - 23 Feb 2005 - Cached - Similar pages

Luckily I am only a very mild asthmatic and will only get perhaps one attack a year and it's usually related to something I have injested, diet is very important to those with full on asthma.

Hope it helps

Kind Regards
Barry
