Title: ok so Im breakin the Lent Law... sue me
Post by Ree on Feb 20th, 2005, 7:33pm
Hi... we are having the worse month imaginable.  My Dads illness... Hell they even lost Daves mother at Nana daycare...
Todays problem...  We seriously need some computer help.
I have aquired a trojan virus that will not allow us past the log in screen.  I have no idea how this happened as I wasn't on the computer when it occured.  Looked at the computer screen after being gone the other day to the hospital to be with Dad.  The screen was black... then we got a warning that said it was a shut down message and that it was initiated by  NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM... anyway our windows screen shows up but doesnt have our names on it anymore to log in... and a window pops up for my Windows password and no password that I remember will go in... we have tried everything paid 40$ to Dell for them to say they can't help us in 5 mins after Dave sat on the phone for an hour and a half... He is on the phone right now waiting over another hour to get the 40$ taken off my card.  We also have a 160$ appt for a geek to come to the house because I have precious stuff on my puter... YES JONNY I HAVE NORTONS... as a matter of fact I had updated it to 2005 and paid 59$ for that about a month ago... Help if you can.....we are so screwed I have vital information on that hard drive and I am an idiot...I havent backed anything up for like 6 months so I will lose 6 months of pics... it sucks... all my graphics...etc... bummer city... the cloud of life is hovering over us... love ree
and something about Isass.exe...

I just fought 2 trojans, hell to get rid of. Can you boot in safe mode? Do you have anything besides norton, ie:  spybot, adaware, hijackthis, etc. Now the real puter geeks will step in  :)

Good luck,
Jim

I just gave mine to a geek it cost $90.00. I couldn't even start the puter she would freeze right up I thought I was screwed. Come to find out I had to many programs running at the same time which overloaded my computer when starting up. Now I only run adaware and Norton only. I don't download anymore programs than that and it works fine. Hopefully it'll be that easy for you.

Hugs on over, thinking of you guys as always,

Sean..............................

My only thought would be to "restore" your computer to a point before you might have picked up the nasty little devil.  It worked for me once - bought some time so I could find the cure at Norton.  It doesn't mess with your files - just restores the hard drive to a certain point in time.

If you are going to have a rig these days, one must befriend a geek.

Find a geek.
Pretend you like him/her, as my friends do.
Have them stop by for a drink & to fix your rig.

Sorry about all that Ree.

I paid Dell a lot extra when I got this system. I always get some guy in Calcutta in 5 minutes. It's paid for itself many times. My geek knew what he was doing.

Pay attention Ree. These goofs know their stuff.

Good luck kid.

Ree....
[smiley=hug.gif]

my friend Gwen had trojan in her computer. And her computer has good protection programs, too. The only way she got rid of the virus was to take the computer to a computer store. They fixed it at the store within 2 days.

Otherwise, best wishes to your family. You're in my prayers. [smiley=hug.gif]

Everyone wants my $$ this is horrible... we are still negotiating with all the different geek groups... Dell sucks Charlie they have never been able to help us with this computer. Dave sat on the phone Sat night... for about an hour then they came on in 5 mins to say they couldnt help us... so Sun afternoon Dell calls to ask how we like their service... we say not at all you couldnt help... so she says for 40$ we can help, Dave stays on the phone 100 minutes... waits for the Dell guy again to say after 5 minutes... we cant help you... so then Dave stays on the phone with Customer service for 150 minutes mind you our phone is logging the whole time... to get the $40 bucks back.
He is on the phone with Plum choice a group of "geeks" that my brother said cured his problem from inside the computer. They want 90$ an hour... jerks... We have an appointment with the "Geek squad" for Thurs and that is 160.$  I have lost days work from Dads surgery and I have my own business so I don't get payed...
Recently Dave got some thing from the Registry of Motorvehicles recently that said that he had 2- 20 year old tickets that if he didnt pay he would lose his license... These tickets were in Maine... we live in Mass... he had to pay them so theres 270$ lets just say this nice Catholic girl is bein tested royally... for all my goodness Im being wacked financially this week... thanks for letting me vent... love ree

Tough problem to solve on the board.  Wish we lived in the same town, I'd just drive over and help you and Dave out.  ;)  Good luck.

The protection schemes insulate the 'backdoors' on your system.  Nothing in the world can prevent you from clicking on something you should not.

That said, the non-geeks are the ones least likely to avoid the suspicious sources of corruption.

Easiest fix for a non-geek...
Step 1 -- pick up a new hard drive.
Step 2 -- remove your old one.  Install the new one.
Step 3 -- do a fresh install of the OS onto your new drive.
Step 4 -- plug your old drive in as a 2nd drive.  Pull over everything that you need to the new drive.
Step 5 -- remove your old drive.  Keep it around should you need to do this again in the future.
Step 5 -- reinstall all your software.
Step 6 -- get a firewall.  Sounds like you had a back door virus.  Try ZoneAlarm (free).

As John indicated... tough to fix without being there.

I have a brutally corrupted rig sitting here now... someone dropped it off over the weekend... 2nd time in 8 months.  The guy did not listen to a f'in thing I said and neglected to do a single backup.  Last time I spent 6 hours removing the 50 viruses and malware instances from the piece of shit.  This time I am wiping the fucker... fresh OS install.

Cleaning a system takes time and cannot really be done over a board.  Wiping a system is fast and can be done by a non-geek.

I just spent the better part of three evenings cleaning my daycare ladies computer.    Would have been eaiser had she let me take it HOME with me...anyways, I digress.

Some of the helpful programs you should have on your computer or at least burned to a disc in case you cannot connect to the WWW are:

Hijackthis version 1.99

http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip

CWShredder (stand alone version)

http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html

Adaware

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

To keep your computer free from Adware, Malware, Spyware, trojans, etc...I use Winpatrol.  Some may disagree with its effectiveness, but I have not had any incidences of any "wares" since I started using it.

WinPatrol

http://www.winpatrol.com/wpsetup.exe

If you are in need of an anti-virus program Grisoft offers AVG which has always worked well for me.

AVG

http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php

Well, I am sure those geekier than I will have some other links to add here....

I have found a source to all of your computer problems.  We had our computer fixed and its flying like a new bird.
