Title: Finland,Minnesota, USA Post by sandie99 on Feb 20th, 2005, 7:51am Last night I was looking at usacitylink.com and found lots of interesting city names. But my fave was Finland! Yep, it's in Minnesota... ;;D This discovery reminds me of one conversation me, my best friend and one american fellow had back in 1997 in Brighton, UK. He asked us where we were from. And we said, from Finland. His next question seemed so stupid to us at the time: What state that is? But that doesn't seem that stupid right now.... ;;D |

Title: Re: Finland,Minnesota, USA Post by floridian on Feb 20th, 2005, 8:07am There is a radio show here from Minnesota (Prairie Home Companion) that features regular jokes about the Norwegians and Swedes. Different regions of the US were opened to immigration at different times, and were settled by large groups from various European countries. Boston and Chicago had lots of Irish, Minnesota and central Canada had lots of Scandinavians, St. Louis and Milwaukee had lots of Germans, Louisiana had the Cajuns (French/Quebecois) etc etc. Today, the patterns are often more subtle and dispersed, but they are still there in the landscape. |

Title: yea and Post by rumplestiltskin on Feb 20th, 2005, 11:17am I once captured this bug...I'll bet it was 15 years old or something like that and I went over to that other place and then I came back and then it was like I felt good about something that my mother said the day before when we were in church where the preacher went like this and all the people listened and now look at what I'm wearing. Do you believe that? Wow finland. That's cool. love den |

Title: Re: Finland,Minnesota, USA Post by Lizzie2 on Feb 20th, 2005, 12:16pm Haha well Philadelphia started off with sections for the Irish, the Italians, and the Germans. However...don't forget that Philadelphia was also the original capital of the United States...so I think we had your mix. My grandma was born in December of 1922 in Germantown, Philadelphia, PA. It was still German back then, apparently. I wasn't around to know! But now...you won't be finding Germans in Germantown any longer! That's not a racist comment in any way...that's just the way things have changed. Chinatowns popped up in US cities as Chinese began to immigrate here. All of the "New" city names were after European names. They added the "New" because it was in the New World. New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire..ya follow? :) In PA though...not far from here, we sure have some *interesting* names brought to us by the Pennsylvania Dutch (of German descent)... Intercourse, PA; Blue Ball, PA; and I know there are a whole lot more, but for some reason I'm drawing a blank at the moment! I love the history of names. :) Lizzie :) |

Title: Re: Finland,Minnesota, USA Post by tommyD on Feb 21st, 2005, 4:31pm My favorite government agency, the U.S. Geologic Survey, has a searchable web site listing every place name shown on any topographic map anywhere in the US and its territorities, plus some foreigh countries. Go to: http://geonames.usgs.gov/ and search for your name - dollars to donuts, there's some village or town or river or stream or hill or swamp or bog or ditch or some damned thing somewhere that's named after you. And there's a link to a topogrphic map image so you can see just where whatever it is that's named after you is. It's a really cook map geek sort of a thing. By the way, we have not one but two small villages called "Climax" here in PA, but they're a ways off from Intercourse. -tommyD |
