I was trying to write advice but the more I did the more I realized there are so many things it could be caused by.  But if you have the time and a little cash, I would ask the guys at a decent small computer store somewhere for advice.  Frankly, the problem could be anything from not having a sound card, not having speakers, to not having the right driver for the sound card.  Or could even be that the sound card is fried, it's possible.  The good news is that the problem can be fixed in all of these case for a very small amount of money.  Hope it helps.

Run Knoppix,
If the sound doesn't work it is a hardware problem, if the sound does work, then it is a Windows problem and you are SOOL.

if you know the manf. of the computer itself, like Dell.  Go to their website, they should have a download.

If not, the motherboard itself should have a manf. and model number and you can go to their web site and download.  You can most likely find these on motherboard when you open the case, but the location of the info is different for different boards.

ok, now somebody tell me how wrong I am, lol.  ;)

When I worked at Creative Labs, I had a school principal call me one day.  He had bought 25 sound cards for his school's computer lab and none of the cards worked.  I told him that every once in a while a bad one slips through, but all 25 meant the problem probably lies elsewhere.  I asked him what kind of speakers he was using.  It got real quiet on the phone and then he said, "Speakers?  I need speakers?"
