OK, 37 views and not one post?

Without looking at the link can you tell me where this photo was taken?

Can you tell me how many US soldiers were lost on the first day?

How many US soldiers died and/or wounded.

Total losses both sides?

How long was the battle?

Fact: 22,000 Japanese soldiers prior to invasion. Only 35 lived to tell the tale.

That photo was taken on Iwo Jima.

The photo is actually a recreation of the actual event.

The first time they raised the flag it went almost un- noticed. They were asked to do it again for the photo.

Mt. Surabachi. I have photos from when I visited it in the early 90's. My piano tuner was a medic in the actual invasion. Of all the people he's met since the invasion, I am the only person he'd ever met who had also stood on the olivine, pebbly sand of Iwo Jima. I shared my photos with him, including a photo of a monument that was erected, fifty years after the battle, in which American and Japanese veterans of that battle met again on those sands in friendship and peace.

 This article doesn't even begin to desribe the change from boyish teen to brave young  man that I have seen.
It doesn't mention the courage facing a 20 year old widow trying to set up a memorial for her husband.He signed up knowing what could happen and had just reenlisted with the attitude of "bring it on". Many young men and women are doing the same everyday here in the united states.they have courage God bless each one of them and those that love them.
  I also believe those in the pictures in this thread  are couragous.The United States  was  founded by those with the courage to say we will have liberty and justice for all.So many have fought and too many have lost lives securing that freedom for us.Many more will follow in their footsteps. freedom is not free never has been never will be.To answer your question  do I think I have courage ......................................................not this kind.

Iwo Jima.

Many Marines in that battle were trained in New Zealand - my mother remembers them doing a forced march - full kit - midsummer - from their base to a town about 45 miles away - a short rest - then a forced march back.

Those who passed that were considered fit enough for battle!

American forces were based in NZ while most NZ males fit enough were fighting from North Africa to Italy - often alongside Americans. My own eldest brother fought in Tobruk - El Alamein - Greece - Crete and Cassino.

My father was stationed at a Commonwealth flight training unit just a few miles from the US Marines NZ base.

Most New Zealanders of that generation had a great deal of respect for those young marines who fought in the Pacific theatre - in the battle for Iwo Jima they took horrendous losses.

Not to get off topic...but did you ever see the movie about the Aussie role in WWII?  It's a very good movie.  I can't remember the name of it now, though!  I think it did take place in either Northern African or Southern Europe in places such as Greece.

Don't recall any particular Australian film about WWII involvement. New Zealand and Australia were not fighting together much WWII.

WWI they fought together as ANZACs at Gallipolli in Turkey alongside the English and French. The invasion forces were pinned down on the beaches for 6 months before being withdrawn. Losses were pretty awful - some good Australian films made about that.

A completely pointless battle!

Of the 7500 New Zealand casualties, there were 2721 dead-one in four of those who landed. Australia's 26,000 casualties included 8000 fatalities. Nevertheless, the fighting at Gallipoli was always less murderous than on the Western Front, where most of the Australians and New Zealanders would shortly head.

NZ had a population of around one million - few families weren't effected.

It was about an Australian runner in WWII.  I saw the film back in high school.  I have to look it up.  I used to have an "adopted family" of sorts from Warilla in NSW, so I always had close ties to Australia.  At Penn State, we had 2 professors next door to one another for strings.  One was a bass teacher from Australia, and one was a viola teacher from New Zealand. :)

Kirsty, my friend from Warilla...she and I used to compare treatment of the Aboriginees and the Native Americans.  That's OT, but still was something we used to discuss.

Can't wait to get to Australia someday.  My grandparents went to both AU and NZ a few years ago.  They loved it. :)

Ahh - maybe that was Gallipoli - a 1981 film.

Two Australian sprinters face the brutal realities of war when they are sent to fight in the Gallipoli campaign in Turkey during World War I.

That's it...thank you!  Made a year after I was born, and yet I still remember it!  bwahaha...  I never saw it until some point in high school. :)  All I remember was the ending was very very very sad.

Sorry and sad to say but I personally dont think it is COURAGE. If you were to ask those men why they done what they did, most will say that they did not do it for mom america or apple pie, most will say they done it for their brothers in arms.....In other words they done it for each other. That thought and feeling continues today in Iraq. To all my bros over there SEMPER FI!

When I think of courage as an action as opposed to a feeling.  Those folks are exercising more courage than I would probably ever need to.  You are an EMT aren't you medic?  To be honest, you probably do too.  Big thanks to all those putting there lives and hearts on the line for our fellow Americans.

John_d I was not trying  to slam on anyone. I was just voiceing my opinion. Yes I am a kentucky certified EMT and Paramedic and work for 2 different Ambulance services.
