Title: FOR THE MIGRAINE SUFFERERS
Post by wolf29 on Feb 16th, 2005, 8:17am
I seen this in MSN news...thought some of you that suffer migraines might be interested

 WOLF29

A study is underway to determine whether fixing a common heart defect might cure migraines in some patients.

The defect, patent foramen ovale (pronounced "PAY-tent for-A-men O-vah-le"), or PFO, is found in one in four people overall, and in half of people who suffer migraine with aura. It occurs when a hole between the two top chambers of the heart fails to close properly at birth. While people with PFO normally have no symptoms, the defect has been tied to stroke, and, more tenuously, to migraine.

The initial study, launched in the United Kingdom in January, is targeted at an estimated 5 percent of migraine sufferers: those with migraine with aura not controlled by medication who also have a PFO.

"We’re inundated with people wanting to do the study," said Dr. Andrew Dowson, director of the King’s Headache Service at King’s College Hospital in London and chief investigator for the Migraine Intervention with STARFlex Technology (MIST) trial. "I think it’s something of great interest to patients especially, but also to the medical profession."

STARFlex consists of two tiny umbrella-like devices with fabric patches stretched across a flexible metal frame. It is passed into the heart after being inserted through an incision in a vein in the groin area. The "umbrellas" are positioned on either side of the hole and then snapped open to seal it shut. The procedure is done under local anesthesia, generally on an outpatient basis, and takes about an hour, Dowson said.

Patients in the MIST study will receive either a PFO closure or a placebo procedure, and will then be followed for six months. Dowson expects to have all data from the study in about a year.

NMT Medical, the Boston-based company that makes the STARFlex device, hopes to start a U.S. trial in migraine patients later this year.

Hearts and minds
Dowson and other supporters of a PFO-migraine connection hypothesize that the hole in the heart allows chemicals that normally would be metabolized by the lungs to reach the brain’s blood supply. It’s been known for 20 years that scuba divers with PFO are more likely to develop decompression sickness, known popularly as "the bends."

There also is also growing evidence for a link between PFO and stroke, most likely because the hole promotes the formation of clots within the heart that can then travel to the brain. Studies are now underway in the United States to determine if PFO repair will help patients who suffer this type of stroke repeatedly.

Researchers began to investigate the migraine-PFO connection more closely after some patients who underwent PFO repair to prevent stroke or decompression illness reported dramatic improvement of their migraine symptoms as well.

No magic bullet
Despite widespread interest, some experts are skeptical that fixing PFOs will prove effective for many patients with migraines. Dr. Seymour Diamond, head of the Diamond Headache Clinic in Chicago, noted that he’d advised one of his patients who suffered frequent migraine attacks with stroke-like symptoms, including weakness on one side of the body, and had a relatively large PFO, to have the defect closed. "He is doing very well," Diamond said. But while he might recommend the treatment in a case like this one, he added, "I wouldn’t recommend it as general therapy."

Dr. Scott Kasner, director of the Stroke Center at the University of Pennsylvania, also urged caution. "We really don’t know how strong the link is with PFO and stroke and whether or not we should do anything about PFO in patients with stroke," he said. "Stroke obviously has a huge impact on somebody’s life, it’s a huge burden that can be potentially disabling permanently. I think it makes sense to prove whether or not PFO closure is effective there before embarking on something like migraine."

Kasner also said he’s concerned that "some people are hearing this as some kind of magical answer to their problems." He added: "It’s still very experimental right now. That doesn’t mean it won’t work; hopefully we’ll show that these things are effective in stroke prevention or migraine prevention, but we don’t know yet and we really don’t know about long-term risks either."

Don't be all snippy. Jonny...there are CHers who have both. And this PFO issue may also be applicable to CH.

I read this thing somewhere or saw it. Life is never strainght-forward, is it?

Relax Jonny. Migrainers sort themselves out after a few posts all on their own. They rarely need assistance.

Relax?....I dont think so!!

Im just letting the dude that started this thread (If he is a CH'er) that it will not be tolerated on my watch, and no way as the main topic of a thread never mind a single post!

If anyone has a problem with what I am posting ...I ask you to either PM or email DJ and ask him what he thinks.

I know what his answer will be, go ahead, do it!!!

Until you have, dont even bother posting to this thread.

This site is devoted completely and exclusively to those that suffer from, and to the supporters of those who suffer from Cluster Headaches!

There are a few other sites out there dealing with Cluster Headaches, but no real place to "interact" with other Cluster sufferers.  There are a few message boards where you can read posts dealing with Cluster Headaches, but sorting through all the migraine, tension, and other headache posts to find the few about Clusters is enough to bring on a headache!

Never again will you have to search, hour upon hour, for information on Cluster Headaches!  You now have a place to "hang out" that you can call our very own.  You now have a place to "vent" when you wake up at 3 a.m. with a headache, the oxygen tank is empty, and you're out of Imitrex!

Finally...a place where you can talk to someone about how horrible your headaches are and know that they really do understand your pain.

Welcome to your new home on the internet!

This is the agreement I accepted when I walked through the front door and was admitted to this nut house ;;D

Helllooo....this same info has been posted here at least twice. Because the possibility exists that CHers may also suffer from this.

Hmmm. Let’s see this is the General Post .Not the Cluster Headache Specific post. Seems to me that this area has always been full of non-CH chitchat and BS. Sounds like THE place to post this. So would it be more accurate to change the front door and say that you cannot say ANYTHING about migraines any ware on this site? Or would it be better to say ONLY CH related thing can be discussed in these boards and noting else?  [smiley=huh.gif] ::)

For the record... somebody is smokin' crack if they think I've posted an article about PFO on here!  I've never even heard of it until now.

As for the "M" word.  Everyone knows it causes arguments here so why even bring it up?  I still stand by what it says at the top of the main page: "This site is devoted completely and exclusively to those that suffer from, and to the supporters of those who suffer from Cluster Headaches!"
