Title: General skills test (W/out pics) Post by BobG on Feb 16th, 2005, 1:05am I'm still working on notseinfeld's pic skill test. Here's another sorta math skill test............don't know if I should laugh or cry at it's message Last week I purchased a burger for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there and cried. Why do I tell you this? Please read more about the "history of teaching math skills": Teaching Math In 1950 A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit? Teaching Math In 1960 A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit? Teaching Math In 1970 A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80. Did he make a profit? Teaching Math In 1980 A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20. Teaching Math In 1990 By cutting down beautiful forest trees, the logger makes $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the forest birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down the trees. (There are no wrong answers.) Teaching Math In 2005 El hachero vende un camion carga por $100. La cuesta de production es............. And we wonder why jobs requiring intelligence are being outsourced?? |

Title: Re: General skills test (W/out pics) Post by ExplodingEyeBall on Feb 16th, 2005, 1:28pm It really irritates me when (no offense meant to anyone here) I go to an ATM in America where the official language is STILL English and I have to choose between Spanish and English. This is America!!!!! I speak English!!!!!! Give me a break. Now, teachers almost HAVE to be bi-lingual because people who decided this country is good enough to live in don't think they need to learn our language. So now their kids don't know the language either and can't be taught. So next, they expect us to hire more people to teach the children of people who refused to learn the language in the first place. In a lot of these cases, it is for people who aren't even paying taxes to support this. (Again... No offense meant...) I'm beginning to rant...... I'll stop. [smiley=oops.gif] |

Title: Re: General skills test (W/out pics) Post by nani on Feb 16th, 2005, 1:41pm I recognize how frustrating this can be for teachers, but no matter what the first language is, the children have the inherent right to a good education. Spanish is just one of the languages spoken by immigrants. |

Title: Re: General skills test (W/out pics) Post by ExplodingEyeBall on Feb 16th, 2005, 1:59pm If I moved to a different country, I wouldn't expect their government to bend over backwards for my English speaking family. I would have the courtesy of learning the official language of what ever country I chose to live in and then teaching it to my children. |

Title: Re: General skills test (W/out pics) Post by nani on Feb 16th, 2005, 2:02pm I would, too... but that's what makes America great...equal opportunity... :) |

Title: Re: General skills test (W/out pics) Post by Ueli on Feb 16th, 2005, 3:36pm Ahem, Did you know that the US constitution does not mention an official language? Quite some Spanish speaking countries were conquered/annexed by the USA. Could be your forefathers forgot to kill off all people that spoke a "foreign" language. Maybe someone should post a skill test in history. IMHO, it is the ultimate climax of conceit to complain about the fact that someone provides for several languages and forces you to choose. (I wonder where the expression of the "Ugly American" comes from :o) [smiley=smokin.gif] |

No. I don't know the percentages but a lot of those poor Europeans speak more than one language. That's a good thing you know. Eons ago, when I was 11, our class was introduced to a smattering of Spanish. It was fun and I should have pursued it. Latin hasn't been all that useful to me but it's all over the place too. English is the most useful language here and it's best to use it if you can. Bilingual notices and information exist because business wants it, and it saves lawsuits, not because we're so damn thoughtful. Charlie |

Title: Re: General skills test (W/out pics) Post by guesst on Feb 16th, 2005, 6:22pm That's all fine and well, Charlie. But it burns my ass when everybody everywhere in the world treats us like crap, except for a few exceptions (The U.K., Canda, Mexico.) And when something happens and they need help, they come crawling with their hands out and we are expected to give money. Yes it is a world economy and we should all help each other, but don't degrade those who help the MOST! That is just B.S. in anybody's eyes. Or at least it should be. |

guesst, could you expand on your researches of the "living conditions of middle class Europeans"? You rise here some very interesting points. Are the poor Americans who can't afford health insurance better off than European who all (not just middle class) can? I'm not jealous of your many advances in technology, but if your you're able to look beyond the boarders, you'll be surprised to see you have no monopoly in that. I can think of a few better systems of Government.... |

Title: Re: General skills test (W/out pics) Post by Charlie on Feb 17th, 2005, 1:55am Ueli; any advances we made in technology are fleeting; especially now that the current bunch of puritans encourage everything but science and critical thinking. The U. S. has been falling behind for some time. It's been forty years since American kids were encouraged by JFK and the New Frontier. What we call outsourcing is more than just money now; we don't make it any more attractive to work here than anywhere else. We spend too much time preaching about the good old days and no longer benefit from a brain drain. Charlie |

Title: Re: General skills test (W/out pics) Post by guesst on Feb 17th, 2005, 10:01am Refridgerators, running water and toilet paper. Something almost everyone here has. Yes Charlie I KNOW we are falling behind and have been for years, it has something to do with not rewarding excellence in our public shools. Back when you failed a kid for not reaching the academic standards of the time and rewarded those who did, we had a brain drain. Now that we ostracize those who would excell and pamper those who can/will not meet the standards, while dropping the standards to accomodated the lowest level of achievement. We have brilliant students who are not being challenged during the time when their minds are the ripest for learning. Dumbing down is a real thing and it is a very real problem. To me it is the MOST important issue facing voters of this generation, but does anybody bring it up? The answer is a resounding NO! The reason for that is the teacher's union. The poor overworked underpaid teachers. They get no respect, they don't feel safe in their work environment. They are too busy trying to discipline children that are disruptive, they can't get any teaching done. And if the could get any teaching done, what would they be productive? Again with the NO answer. They are the ones who made it illegal for us to discipline our children at home, they have taken it on themselves to tout their own values on our children, instead of the values of the parents. What on earth does that have to do with education? NOTHING!!!!!!!! Go back to teaching the 3 R's and You will see a strong, smart and respectfull American citizen again. There I've gone and ranted my brains out and it's still early. |

Title: Re: General skills test (W/out pics) Post by nani on Feb 17th, 2005, 10:12am Not going to argue this further...however, I must ask... Thomas, have you ever spent a whole day in a public school classroom? I urge everyone who blames educational issues solely on teachers to do so. It's an eye opening experience. Not to say there aren't bad teachers...but it's much more complex a problem then some would have you believe. nani |

Title: Re: General skills test (W/out pics) Post by Woobie on Feb 17th, 2005, 10:16am because - if you reward excellence - you make the "other" children "feel bad" that THEY didn't get honors too. and it makes me sick. they dont want to make the other children feel bad ........... political correct schooling..... they dont fail kids and keep them back - because if what it might do to their self esteem. Dont worry about what it will do to them next year when they cant keep up. i will go now - i do not wanna get started......... |

No, I never went to school, can't you tell by my poor grammar? BTW did you not read what I said about allowing parents to discipline their children and let families worry about teaching values and cultural issues. But the simple fact of the matter is that a graduating senior has less grammatical power than a sixth grader from the 1950's. So you tell me who is to blame. I'm sorry I am working too damn hard to pay taxes, which pays teachers salaries and also their union dues, to go home at night and teach children how to read, I'm already paying some one else TO DO THAT! |

If we were to treat teachers as well as we do a lot of Washington bureaucrats, teachers salaries would be six figures. You have to stop blaming them for our failures. Also, not gutting even basic education, censoring science books, running in horror at the mention of health education, wasting time and money in court and elsewhere trying erase evolution and replace it with pre-enlightenment doctrine, teachers wouldn't need unions. Education needs independence from silly legislators and religious nuts. Censorship by funding is an outrage. The reason for such fears of discipline comes from that for the first time, child cruelty is well-known. The Catholic church troubles are a hell of an example. Like so many things, we have over-reacted but it’s better than allowing caning or a psychopathic parent to get away with beating a child senseless. The pendulum is already swinging back just a bit though and so far it looks pretty good. The world did not begin with our generation. These arguments have existed for decades. It's nothing new, has nothing to do with teachers unions or any union. These debates--like crime reporting--because of technology, are just widely reported for the fist time. It's good copy and fuel for screeching radio talk show hosts and works because of perceived fear. FDR was right. The "Ugly American" designation stems from the fact that too many of us have a profound ignorance of world history. I love this country but we are pretty dammed obnoxious when every day we stand up and tell the world we are the greatest. It's not necessary and we are the only ones who do it. Leave that to Mohammed Ali. Charlie |
