Title: veterans memorial
Post by boonie on Feb 8th, 2005, 8:30pm
I came from a small town Lyndon Illinois. The town decided that they should build a memorial for the
veterans that had served from there. They sent out fliers saying that they were having a town meeting and anyone interested were invited to attend. My father was in  WW ll a medic with 100th general hospital. He was at utah beach on d-day June 5th 1944.and the battle of the bulge and red ball express. He was quite a guy, and I never tired of his world war ll stories.I saw my father nearly everyday until he died Feb 5th 1994. He had the list of all the WWll Veterans from Lyndon on a large plaque so I thought I would share it with the comittee. Also this last year I had also  started researching my family genealogy and found out that my Great great great grandfather who was also buried in Lyndon was in the war of 1812, and his son my great great grandfather was in the civil war a sergeant with 75th infantry company B and fought at the battle of Perryville KY. that is another story. Anyway I thought I would share the names with the comittee. They talked me into volunteering. So I designed a memorial and they decided to build my idea. We are going to display all the names of those who served from Lyndon in all the wars from1812 to the present. I thought I would share my design with you folks. There is going to be a functional waterfall under the granite and I am buying a stone for the walk way that has ouch on. (fund raiser) the cost will exceed 50,000.00 dollars for the project. There is a deeper meaning behind the design that I will be glad to share with you if you are interested. Here is a picture of the model that will built this year in honor of all those who served. I hope you like it.

Good work.  Will look great in plan view.

Help me with the scale.

Neat things you can do with that geometry.

Expound please.

as for the deeper meaning:

First the scale is one inch to the foot . It is a pentagon shaped with actual size being 16 foot on a side so the granite wall will be 32 feet in length. and so will the water fall below. The pentagon shape is called the golden medium.

The pythagoreans believed there were 5 perfect solids. The tetrahedron, cube, octahredron, icosahedron, and the dodecahedron.the first four were somehow identified with four elements fire, earth, air, and water. the fifth element the dodeca.represented the ether or in other words the heavens.

The pythagoreans loved whole numbers and believed all things could be derived from them. but a crisis arose in there doctrine when they discovered that square root of two(the ratio of the diagonal to the side of a square)had no ratio so the word irrational was coined , the cube which represents earth is the square, I thought what is more irrational than war when two peoples feel they must kill each other..The dodecahedron which is twelve sided pentagon represents the heavenly bodies which is the fifth element or the fifth essence from which we get the word quintessential so we have heaven and earth. war on one hand which is irrational and the veterans who are quintessential to our freedom represented by the pentagon.

I also found out that just by chance that Pentagon in Washington, started construction on september 11,1941  and Fort McHenry in Baltimore from which the we get the Star Spangled Banner is pentagon shaped. So that is how come I decided on the pentagon shape for the memorial the waterfall is for those who chose to sit and  reflect on the soldiers that fought for our freedoms. And a star which fits perfectly inside the pentagon Thats about it.

Wow, I love the design and the story behind it. That was incredible and the thought and love that went into it make it even more precious. Thank you.
How long will it be until it is completed?

Way to go! Love the design, it's apparent that you've put alot of thought and heart into this. My highest appreciation goes out to those who fight for and defend our freedom.
My dad fought in WW II, and my step-dad fought with the Canadian RAF and  the US Army Air Corp in WW II, the US Army in Korea, and retired when they wouldn't let him go to 'Nam. Let's never forget what these brave men have done for us all.
